The Official JA Martial Arts Thread! | |
Ataris - Milwaukees Finest |
Allright, I can't remember if we ever had our own martial arts thread. But increasing numbers of JA members are in a way or another interested in some sort of martial arts.. Many of the people I've talked to over the years have been or still are active in some sort of martial art, it being everything from Judo and Karate, to more artistic stuff like Capoeira.. So if you have anything related to martial arts, what you train or what your favorite martial art is.. Please post! I train Muay Thai myself. Thaiboxing for those of you who wonder.. Been training it since late 2004, and I think it's absolutely awesome! -Ataris <3 _______________ [ Honorable mentions: aph3x | Milamber | Bail Hope Belouve | Jaiko D'Kana | Rosered | JediEthic | Mike/JJ/TheKing | Kensei | Dane | Gradius | Thomas Skywalker | Pink Floyd | Setementor | Steinin | Odan-Wei ] [ Owner of: MetaDust's 500th comment! | Eica's 700th comment! | Pink Floyd's 666th, 999th, 1200th and 1337th comment! | DarkRyu's 400th comment! | Redeye's 1st comment! | Cow's 1111st comment! | Rufusan's 75th comment! | Wicek's 3300th and 3400th comment! | Dash Starlight's 2000th comment! | Piccolo's 3400th comment! | Takaru's 300th comment! | Senor Hat's 900th comment! | Rytandus' 4160th comment! | The first ever awarded, the original, the one and only, Catphin Award!!1 ] "Music expresses that which can not be put in to words but can not remain silent." |

*Bumb* ^.^ I've been in the local Taekwondo dojo all morning (it's 13:53 now) for graduation. I decided to go to bed early yesterday, and get up at about 6:30 or so. I went to bed at around 1 and got up at 8:32 :/, started rushing around, gathering all the stuff I needed, my dobok, my belt, money for graduation and possibly a new belt, my pensum book ect ect. When I got there 8:59 (my mother was driving me, thank god) I realise I, of course, had forgotten my pass needed for graduation. I wave my mother back just before she leaves, tells her to get my pass here no matter what. So far, it had seemed the gods themselves(ish) wanted to stop me from getting my new belt. I enter the dojo rather nervous and tired. Got warmed up and sent outside and waited for the lower members(we start from the buttom, the higher belts tend to take our sweet time ^^), wrestling a little with a friend of mine to get our nerves down, and finally entered the dojo when the lowbies were done. The graduation went kinda okay, thou I had to save my energy to make it last because I am in bad shape, not kicking too hard or fast ect ect. Finally, when done, I had time to relax and felt like passing out on the floor. I was told that it was a very good graduation, I had given a lot of my time into training my things(aye, riiiight ) and I understood what was needed to understand. I had a beautiful "ground" techneque, good control of my body and I was appearently very flexible. I was told that all I needed to train was very small things, making the grades go from very good to perfect. Then I ate shawama and drank cola for breakfast. \o/ Edit: Oh and I did pass _______________ Artificial intelligence beats natural stupidity. Quote: Well, after 3 weeks of healing I thought I was good enough to use it, but after tonights class I went to, I can't even walk normal without it really really hurting (aaaaahh!). I'm starting to think I'm really skrewed up, so I'll go see the foot doctor to see what's really wrong. It really sucks not being able to do what you love, even if it's just for a while Ouch. Good luck with that; hopefully it'll be nothing serious. In other news, today marks the one-year anniversary of me being a black belt. Yay! And un-related, but one of the instructors has set me a task that is gong to take some time and effort: I need to work on getting my kicks to the point where I can leave them out there for a few seconds before rechambering. Right now, if I try to hold them out, after the first second or so they just drop drastically... especially with the black belt forms coming up that are very showy, and look most impressive when you can hold high kicks out for, like, five seconds... So, yeah. That's my goal. Add proficiency in kicking for show to my kicking for all that other stuff I do. _______________ Well then. My training is complicated, hard and gradually increases. However, its frequent. Daily I prefer to do it in private, go out into the woods that is so conveniently next to our village/town. Return when you are near enough crawling home. lol Just kidding. I return when my life requires me back . Which isn't long. Whatever your training is. Well I basicly have 3 different training types: 1. Muay Thai training at our gym: warming up (running, jumping, punching bags etc etc..) Stretching (mostly legs/waist) Technique training (pretty much everything you can do in MT) Some sparring More stretching Muscular training (situps/pushups, that kind of stuff) Stretching on your own if you don't have to leave for anything 2. Working out in the gym Weightlifting (benchpress/legpress/abworkout.. the lot!) Jumpingrope (my favorite! really builds up your stamina, and good warming up too) Other than that, I do basicly every machine you can find in a gym 3. Jogging nothing weird about that? running around on the track and whatnot.. I can't really tell you how many reps I do, since it varies.. something from 2-3 times 20-40 per exercise. sometimes I'm lazy and I don't do that many, other days I really feel like torturing myself and I go to a mad extent, and then I'm sore the next week or so, which isn't that good.. -Ataris <3 _______________ [ Honorable mentions: aph3x | Milamber | Bail Hope Belouve | Jaiko D'Kana | Rosered | JediEthic | Mike/JJ/TheKing | Kensei | Dane | Gradius | Thomas Skywalker | Pink Floyd | Setementor | Steinin | Odan-Wei ] [ Owner of: MetaDust's 500th comment! | Eica's 700th comment! | Pink Floyd's 666th, 999th, 1200th and 1337th comment! | DarkRyu's 400th comment! | Redeye's 1st comment! | Cow's 1111st comment! | Rufusan's 75th comment! | Wicek's 3300th and 3400th comment! | Dash Starlight's 2000th comment! | Piccolo's 3400th comment! | Takaru's 300th comment! | Senor Hat's 900th comment! | Rytandus' 4160th comment! | The first ever awarded, the original, the one and only, Catphin Award!!1 ] "Music expresses that which can not be put in to words but can not remain silent." Jackie Chan is a genius. Completely ignoring how good he might be in real life or anything, in movies he makes everything look so easy-- that is, until you see the outtakes . I've recently gone through seeing most of his movies in sequential order (starting with the chinese kung-fu movies that have very little plot but brilliant fight choreography) and ending with Rush Hour 2 just last week or so. I just can't help but exclaim whenever he rolls into a window or something like that-- he's really, really good. _______________ Well then. Im glad about your replies... I though everyone woudl go stand against me and say Im a too big fan of TV and yes it´s true I do watch alot of martial art movies but then again i watch then and compare them with the reality trought my experience and then learn from the reality side of the movies... I liek Jackie Chan´s style in the movies ALOT... You can´t make martial art more realistic than that... I mean he doesn´t kick a guy down and then run for the other guy but he runs away, uses the enviroment and in a flat area with many guys against he usually gets a beat up... _______________ =Y-Z= Yay Piccolo´s 777th post, [Yay Damien´s 250th post, [OMG LADY´s 800 POSTAH!!![Lady´s 888 post... lol yea, would be cool to see him still going at it as a 65 year old. And Plo, I only do karate right now, but I've had some experience in Wing Chun as well as a bit of Jeet Kune Do. I haven't done anything at all for four months now though; i tore a cartilege in my left knee and I haven't been able to do any exercise at all. Most I get up to now is walking, but that gets REALLY boring. I dunno what to do actually, it's not exactly healing, and I don't have enough dough to get an operation done either - I don't even know if an operation is a good idea. Nice topic... It gave me a headacahe to answer the poll... My answer woud have been.. A mix of all these... Every art has it weaknesses and strengths... But if I had to pick an art that covers much of all, it would be Jeet Kune Do.. Bruce Lee made up this art and the point is to be faster and more initiative than the other one... Bruce Lee wasn´t the best Kung-Fu artist... He was the best fighter.. His punch was strong enough to knock out a Shootfighter ( ultimate fighting/shooto/freecombat) or a heavy weight boxer... He was the best for his usage of all the strong stuff from the arts, which was later named Jeet Kune Do... Kickboxer´s/thaifighter´s kickstrength, Shaolin monk´s initiativity and quickness, Judoka´s/Aikidokas´s technique of close holding combat, Taekwondoka´s feet technique and tricking, Karateka´s combatibility , Boxer´s toughness and wrestlers slipperity () now that is a good fighter... Bruce Lee might not have all those but he had the most of those and that is why he is the best... And nor even Jeet has all these but like Bruce it succeeded the best... No fighting style is the best or strongest and that is the reason I do every type of martial arts I just can find... Every über great thaifighter should try to learn some Kung-Fu to gain a huge advantage... *Paying honor to Bruce Lee *silent moment* I know the thread only asks peoples opinions but I wanted to bring this up _______________ =Y-Z= Yay Piccolo´s 777th post, [Yay Damien´s 250th post, [OMG LADY´s 800 POSTAH!!![Lady´s 888 post... ...All of my really bad shin-wounds have been from the few tournaments I've been to. (Ahh, memories. Have you ever seen in a movie or something somebody getting kicked and literally flying back a few feet before landing? Have you wondered if that was really possible? Trust me-- it is. It's happened to me.) So they haven't really been all that frequent. I haven't been to many tournaments, I don't really like them. In other random news, I've learned up to move 32 or so of my form. Still more to go, though. The thing that makes this form hard to learn is that is has no real pattern to it at all-- yes, some moves happen again later with the opposite side, but not where you'd expect, and not really in the same order. It's a really fun form, though. It also holds a somewhat special significance for me, because it's the highest-rank form I watched other people learn before I got to black belt myself. So once I learn it, I basically have nothing from way back when that I still need to learn. Of course, now later black belt forms have replaced these in my "I really want to learn that" list, but whatever . _______________ Well then.
