Allright, I can't remember if we ever had our own martial arts thread. But increasing numbers of JA members are in a way or another interested in some sort of martial arts.. Many of the people I've talked to over the years have been or still are active in some sort of martial art, it being everything from Judo and Karate, to more artistic stuff like Capoeira.. So if you have anything related to martial arts, what you train or what your favorite martial art is.. Please post! I train Muay Thai myself. Thaiboxing for those of you who wonder.. Been training it since late 2004, and I think it's absolutely awesome! -Ataris <3 _______________ [ Honorable mentions: aph3x | Milamber | Bail Hope Belouve | Jaiko D'Kana | Rosered | JediEthic | Mike/JJ/TheKing | Kensei | Dane | Gradius | Thomas Skywalker | Pink Floyd | Setementor | Steinin | Odan-Wei ] [ Owner of: MetaDust's 500th comment! | Eica's 700th comment! | Pink Floyd's 666th, 999th, 1200th and 1337th comment! | DarkRyu's 400th comment! | Redeye's 1st comment! | Cow's 1111st comment! | Rufusan's 75th comment! | Wicek's 3300th and 3400th comment! | Dash Starlight's 2000th comment! | Piccolo's 3400th comment! | Takaru's 300th comment! | Senor Hat's 900th comment! | Rytandus' 4160th comment! | The first ever awarded, the original, the one and only, Catphin Award!!1 ] "Music expresses that which can not be put in to words but can not remain silent." |

Your school doesn't have the Korean flag up? that's not right man, boo! And I can see you have a more karate based TKD, with the japanese influenced, fold-over dobok. We have the V-neck uniforms, I believe that's where Korea wanted to totally make TKD their own and break off from japanese colonial rule influence. You also do the karate looking sparring, with foot and hand guards compared to our shin guards, forearm guards and a chest protector. Tell me, is that ITF way of sparring? I can really see that you guy's do the ITF, I believe we do WTF here, Tae Geuk Poomse, ect ect. _______________ Free Tibet! To be honest, Plo, I have no clue. I did a bit of looking through both my school's and the USTF's websites, but nowhere could I find anything that said what variant of TKD they teach. I know it's ITF rather than WTF, but that's all... (The annoying thing about googling for 'USTF' is that there are two United States TaeKwonDo Federations...) Anyway, if you want to take a look at the sites yourself, see if you can find it somewhere, we've got the USTF site and my school's site. edit: the lack of a period at the end of that sentence was bugging me. _______________ Well then. Heh. Ours is just in two groups: juniors, and adults. There's no set age to switch from one to the other-- it's basically when The Powers That Be decide you're ready to move up. I switched a little after I got my black belt, so I was about just turning 14. Oh, how I loved those weeks as a black belt in the junior class... (heh ) White belts actually have to break at testing? Here, juniors (and most likely adults as well, not sure though) don't start breaking until brown belt. No sparring until green belt. I'm not sure what the white and yellow belts spend their time doing, actually, since we stopped doing one- and two-steps a couple of years ago, when we rejoined the USTF. Which I think is kinda unfair, since I had to learn them all on my way up, but once I get to black belt we don't do them anymore. _______________ Well then. Here we have little ninjas class ages 4-5, juniors all belts class ages 6-12, adult/family class ages 8 & up, and then Adults all belts ages 13 & up, and a red/black belt class on friday nights. Promotion test requirements for 10th gup white belt to 9th gup yellow belt include: low block, middle block, high block. Middle punch, front kick, round (house) kick, and stepping side kick. Meaning of "tae", "kwon", and "do", and numbers 1-20 in Korean, that's all in Korean, nothing more. The form is our schools "basic form", one steps (white belt 1-4), and break is stepping side kick (the kiddies use the little thin boards). If you go to two classes a week and practice 15 minutes a day you will learn your stuff. The thing about the 100 pushups, I don't think they'll fail you if you can't do 100 pushups, who can really? It's more of the never giving up-never quitting attitude. A black belt going for his 1st degree said to me after he did the beach thing, "basicly it's never saying I quit and you'll be ok". They dish all that out is to see if you really want it. And it's spelled "dul" really? They sound the same _______________ Free Tibet! Mm... warmups depend on the class, who's in it, and what we're doing. The black belt only class on tuesdays, for instance, does a lot more of that than the white-through-black on saturday. Only problem is, I haven't been to a black belt class in ages. We were mostly doing grappling, and I got tired of being picked up and thrown around all the time. That wasn't going to change until I got both heavier and stronger, and neither was going to happen if all I managed to do was practice how to land. Granted, that's a valuable skill, but it doesn't work me out much. In other classes, stretches are counted in korean, but we rarely do more than six of each stretch, mostly because people are expected to stretch on their own before the class starts. Kicks and the other stuff you mentioned we do more of, but those are counted in english. I'm curious, though-- is your school (or kwan, fine)for adults only, or kids and adults? 'Cause mine accepts kids as young as five, and I think one major reason we don't do more korean language stuff is it gets really confusing for the little kids, and hard for them to remember. They have enough trouble memorizing their first form, let alone a bunch of korean terminology. As a side note, if I had to do 100 push-ups for black belt testing, there is no possible way I could test. I cannot physically do more than 20 while still being able to call them push-ups. Yes, I know I'm weak. I'm light. I'm skinny. Some kids at school don't think I'm strong enough to be a black belt. That doesn't really matter, though, 'cause I am a black belt, and most people who think that are of the "I can beat you up 'cause I'm stronger" school of thought. Anyway, as has been said, all a black belt is is a master of basic technique. It doesn't require knowledge of the history of the martial art (though I do know a fair bit of that) or knowing all these terms in the martial art's native language (I used to know a lot more than I do) because frankly, what's the point? I can certainly understand my instructor if he gives me a bunch of commands in korean (don't ask me how to spell them, though. Off the top of my head there's 'stop,' 'relax', ,'begin,' and a bunch of other stuff I've mostly forgotten is a different language) and I've completely forgotten what my point was. Sorry. Oh, if this comes across as bitter, it's not 'cause of you or anything. Yesterday I got (figuratively) beat up by a third degree in sparring, though I'm not too annoyed at myself 'cause he was an instructor and national champion. I'm more annoyed that my arm hurts, in the quiet itchy sort of way. edit: I'd actually spell two as "dul", not "dool." Just as a note of interest. edit 2: I only just realized that this was my 600th comment. Yay! _______________ Well then. To me it's a way of knowing your arts history. You should know a little bit, but I guess your right, it's not vital, heck it's just a side thing here, but my Grandmaster is Korean so maybe that's why And about those black belt testings. They are crazy aren't they? nearly 3 mile run, 100 pushups and techniques done in the sand, then finish up the test back inside the dojang! but in comparison to those triathalon/iron men dudes it's not that much. Meh, doesn't really matter if he knows the terminology or not if you ask me. I mean maybe the requirements for certain kwans are different in regards to knowing terminology and deemed as necessary as part of learning TKD, but I don't think it's absolutely vital to know them. As long as the student can perform all the techniques, forms/katas and can spar well etc, then they're good to go. If anything, the terminology just acts as a memory aid for me. Seven is el-gub in Korean . Your a first dan black belt and you can't even count to seven in Korean? Thats a shame. White belts here aren't allowed to test for yellow belt until they can count to twenty. Here are numbers one through twenty. hana, dool, set, net, da-sot, ya-sot, el-gub, yuh-dol, ah-hop, yul, yul-hana, yul-dool, yul-set, yul-net, yul-da-sot, yul-ya-sot, yul-el-gub, yul-yuh-dol, yul-ah-hop, soo-mul. Doesn't your dojang do a warmup before class? like 50 jumping jacks, 50 front to backs (basicly one foot in front of the other, while bouncing on the ball of your foot, changing stance), and 50 side to sides (jump side to side on the ball of your foot). Push ups, rolling the shoulders back 10 times, then forward 10 times. Feet and knees together rotating the knees, hands on your hips rotating your hips, head side to side, up and down, and then full rotations counting to ten, sometimes twenty times in each direction. We each take turns, or the master, counts in korean when we do the warmup, and when we stretch (wich is in the warmup, and after class). So if your Kwan does a warmup before a class, don't you count? Lol get up to date bro Do you know all the Korean terminology for all of your techniques up to your first dan? Do you know atleast some history of Tae Kwan Do? I laugh at your black belts, for our testings are contained within the building, and thus no running for us! Hah! (Do they really have to run on the sand? ...That's harsh.) We used to learn the korean names for everything, but a couple years ago that started fading away. I can count to six in korean, but for some reason I can never remember how to say "seven," and without seven, eight through ten don't stay remembered either. It's annoying. _______________ Well then. Well it was a black belt testing with colored belts. The black belts had to be at a certain beach at 6:00 a.m., 100 pushups/drills done in the sand, including their forms, then run nearly 3 miles, help and do the childrens testing at 10:00 a.m., then complete the final part of their testing with the rest of the colored belts from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. (not to mention a 3 station break, with a palm heel strike breaking a brick). The black belts got it alot harder then us colored belts. For me I had to do my basic techniques from white belt up to green. should I say it in Korean? nah hehe... low block, middle block, high block, reverse middle punch. Then yellow belt- double knife-hand block, front kick, reverse middle punch. Orange belt- Round house, knife-hand strike. Green belt- Front kick, backfist-strike, then continueing green belt- spinning back fist-strike, spinning knife-hand strike. Then forms- our schools Basic form, then Tae Geuk Il Jang, Tae Geuk Ee Jang, and Tae Geuk Sam Jang. After forms we did kicking combinations like round house, 360 round house(also known as spinning round kick), then back kick, or running axe kick, crescant kick, back kick ect ect. After kicks came the written test, it was simple, it's just some history like who where the first americans taught TaeKwanDo and when? What period did TaeKwanDo first enter the United States? and all the terminology for everything you have learned up to your belt level said in korean. Naery Cha-gi = Axe Kick, Nakka Cha-gi = hook kick (step in hook for me, purple belts and above do spinning hook). I aced that, it was simple. After that we did some kick boxing (Ataris should like this ), nothing too fancy, just jab, cross, face block- face block, uppercut-uppercut, rib block- rib block, hook-hook, bottom weave-bottom weave(duck), then elbow strike-elbow strike, and knee strike-knee strike, same things on both sides twice. After that we did one steps, also known as self defense moves. i.e. if someone grabs you ect ect. Next came sparring, orange belt and above are only permitted to spar so we got in our gear and everyone took their turn. The point isn't to win it's just to show you know how to spar. I was paired up against a black belt just a little taller than me and a few years older than me. I didn't do anything fancy, just round house kicks and a few punches to the hogus. Towards the end of the fight, since he's so tall, he got me with a round kick with his right leg to the left side of my head...I guess I got super focused and serius after I was hit in the head because I heard people go "aah look at his eyes! he's got something for him now!" wich then I unleashed a flurry of double jump round house kicks, like two in the air one after the other, over and over as much as I could then it was over. It was a blast, I'll start going to every sparring class I can now, I forgot how much fun it was. After sparring we broke our boards, mine with Naeryo Cha-gi (Axe kick), got it the first time. The testing was alot of fun, so I'm a purple belt now. The only thing he said I needed to work on a bit was my balance on back kick in the combination of kicks, other then that my master said I did excellent. Hooaah! _______________ Free Tibet! You're breaking with an axe kick? Y'know, I've never done that before... I've seen it done, though. But speaking of boards, I haven't broken any in a really long time. I should probably do that. Sparring's a lot easier if you're not intimidated by it-- or by your partner, I suppose... still, the main thing is to focus. This is testing sparring, so you'll probably want to show off a bit, do some things that you normally wouldn't while sparring. Go for that jump 360 hook kick, or whatever (I don't know what kicks you know...), 'cause as long as your partner isn't really annoying they'll go along with it. After all, this is their testing too-- or if it isn't and they're just helping out, they know that it's your testing, so they should cooperate and not dash in for the figuratively-fatal blow. All in all, good luck! _______________ Well then. Just so you know, just because I don't post often doesn't mean I don't lurk this place multiple times every day... |

White > Yellow > Orange > GreenShade1 > GreenShade2* > Purple > Blue > Brown > Red > 'Recommended' 1st Black Belt (technically considered a 1st degree, but the belt isn't all black and you're really kinda not a black belt yet...) *I have no idea how the greens work, actually-- They look the same to me, but I havn't actually ever observed a class full of just them to see how that works. Really, the belt system was changed while I was a red belt, so I'm not totally sure about the stuff before that. In any case, each belt has a low and a high rank, high rank indicated with a different color (either white or black, depending on the color of the belt itself) running through the center of the belt horizontally. ...understand that? good. Yeah, unlike what some kids I know seem to think, black belt is not the end. It is not the goal that, once you reach, you quit. All black belt means is a master of basic technique. In the grand scheme of things, black belt is only about half-way there rankwise, and pretty much just the first step skill-wise. Assuming you keep going, that is... I'll have been a [true, not recommended] 1st degree black belt for 1 year in 1 month yesterday. And for the record, I don't believe I'm ready to test for second degree yet. Besides the fact that I don't yet know all of the last form I need to learn (mostly my fault-- spotty attendance), I don't really feel I'm ready yet. I have the control but not the precision I want--my hand might be a couple of inches off target, though I'm not going to hit you unless I mean to. And really, as long as you can look at somebody else in class and think to yourself "I want to be as good as them," then you still have more to learn-- even if it's just the instructor you're looking at. You can always be better, and that's basically what black belt represents-- you know the basics, so now you can really try to improve. ...heh, I didn't mean to be quite so long-winded... _______________ Well then. Wushu Wushu , or "the art of fighting," is the general term for all self-defense sports, some of which may be carried out with the fists or the legs, or with the help of swords or lances. "Wushu" as we know it is an ancient Asian art for the self-discipline of mind and body with roots dating back thousands of years in China . Westerners are more familiar with the term Kung Fu, which translates loosely into "skill," and was popularized by Bruce Lee and the TV show "Kung Fu." Wushu has two main categories: routine exercises and free combat fighting as its forms. The practice of Wushu provides an excellent release of stress through self-discipline in meditation and breathing. The practice also demands skill, concentration, and consistent and dedicated effort. For those who persevere, the rewards are great: strength in mind and body, and the development of physical, mental, and spiritual resources. Gold Dragon (Jinlong) And Its Duan Wei Zhi in Kung Fu / Wushu Black Belt System Never Used in Chinese Martial Arts History The Chinese Wushu Association has adopted 3 animals -- Long (dragon), Hu (tiger) and Ying (eagle) - -as symbols for advanced, intermediate and beginning levels, respectively. Each animal-level is further differentiated into 3 different ‘colors’ -- bronze, silver and gold -- to indicate a specific Duan Wei (level or ranking) of Chinese Martial Artist. The highest level is Jinlong (Golden Dragon). The (Black) belt system is never used in China. If a Chinese Martial Arts school uses the (black) belt system, it is either the school does not understand the Chinese system or the school does not follow the Chinese system and makes up their own rules, and make you pay for it. For Chinese Kung Fu, San Diego's JING Institute follows this Chinese system. In order to achieve the level of Jinlong (Golden Dragon), students must pass tests on basic Wushu skills, advanced forms, and multiple weapon proficiencies; students’ quality of wushu must be as good as that of Chinese professional athletes. If you want the highest quality of Chinese Martial Arts Kung Fu, San Diego's JING Institute will guide you not only to the Golden Dragon Kung Fu level, but also our Chinese culture. Come and visit San Diego's JING institute and prove it to yourself! We do not use color belts, and therefore our students do not have to buy color belt after color belt. While the color belt system has its uses, it comes from Korean and Japanese tradition, not the Chinese traditions, and we like to follow Chinese traditions as purely as possible! Note: Many students and parents complained to us that they are forced to buy color belts in their former kung fu schools. If a Kung Fu/Wushu school uses the color belt system, then you are your own judge to evaluate the school --- "How much does it cost me to buy belt after belt?" "Does the Chinese Wushu authority in China recognize its belt system?" In fact, the answers are "expensive" and "No" respectively. If you visit a Kungfu/Wushu school which uses the belt system, you may want to ask the school, "Why? Is it necessary?" About the Gold Dragon and the Tiger In Chinese culture, the Dragon symbolizes power: Power, the Emperor, the Chinese People, and China itself. Based on the study by San Diego's Chinese College Instructor Siu-Fong Evans, Chinese tradition does not distinguish between the different color dragons -- White Dragon, Yellow Dragon, Red Dragon, Green Dragon, Rainbow Bright Dragon --, but it does distinguish between the precious metals, Gold being the most refined, valuable, and desirable of them all; and that is why our Chinese rankings run from bronze through silver to gold, and never touch White Dragon or Red Dragon. The Tiger --- usually a White Tiger or a traditional Yellow Tiger (and always a Striped Tiger) --- is used as a symbol for energy in Chinese Martial Arts (Kung Fu or Wushu). Although Ma (horse) is used in war time and hunting time, Ma is not included in any level. Jinlong is the highest level among the Dragon, Tiger and Eagle. As with the Dragon, the particular color "White Tiger", "Black Tiger" or "Yellow Tiger" is not used as a Chinese Symbol like the Dragon. If you like dragons, we believe you like our Chinese culture. In San Diego, we are the only "Chinese" Institute of Martial Arts and Culture! Come to JING Institute to learn our culture in Mandarin language, Chinese Arts, Chinese Kungfu, Wushu, Taiji, Guasha, even the Chinese Abacus.
