I listened to a song (or a story with a beat in the background) and these are the words it says. Please don't start any sort of flame war...I'm just posting it because I thought it was a great piece of writing

All of mankind has been diagnosed with a condition, that the bible calls 'Sin'. It's not like cancer or leukemia, which can be traced through a scan. If anything, it's more like a psychological sickness and visible to the eye, but effects the way we act and even think.

You see, 'Sin', is where we do things wrong...when we do things contrary to God's 'perfect' planet. Things like lying, cheating, stealing, or thinking you're better than everyone else. And 'Sin', even if it starts out small, always leads to death. It's kinda like "What goes up, must come down" or "Every action has a reaction". Well, for 'Sin', that reaction is death. So this sickness we've all been diagnosed with, is really more like a fatal disease.

So what can we do about it? Is that it? Are we supposed to come to terms with our disease with no hope of any cure? Is there a doctor anywhere on the planet who can help us? Here's the answer:

2,000 years ago, a man named Jesus lived. This was a real, live human being. Skin and bones, guts and brains, everything. But there is something special about this one, and even though he was tempted in every way, he never sinned. The disease simply couldn't be found in him. In fact, he went around healing all sorts of people with sicknesses: The blind, the deaf, the demon possesed. He fed the poor, cared for the untouchables and even raised people from the dead. Everywhere he went, he told people about this massive party, called the 'Kingdom of God'. It's a community, a family, where everyone is loved and accepted and where everyone can learn to love and accept not just their friends, but even their enemies. And if Jesus' life and teachings weren't 'odd' enough, his death was even more strange. Even though he was the last person in the world to deserve it. Even though he was sentanced 'Not-Guilty' of any crime or wrong doing. Even though there was not a trace of this 'Sin' disease in him, he laid down his life at the hands of contaminated people, like you and me, and died on a cross. And when he died, he took it upon himself the responsibility of the punishment for all the wrong things the people around him were doing. He took upon himself the responsibility of the punishment for all the wrong things we, 2000 years later, are still doing. It was the ultimate cure for the ultimate disease. And now we can have the forgiveness of God.

But it doesn't end there. You see, three days after he died, Jesus came back to life and appeared to hundreds of people. He overcame death and proved once and for all that he was who he said he was all along...The Son of God.

The bible said in "John 3:16" 'God loved the world so much that he sent his one and only son so that whoever belives in him shouldn't die forever, but live forever.'

And that's basically what it means to become a Christian. Just to admit that you're lost in Sin and let Jesus come into your life. Ask him to sort your head out and he will. If you take this seriously, then you too can be a part of this amazing thing called the 'Kingdom of God', where you can find love and acceptance and have your life completely changed...forever.

23% is also a valid figure. However, whichever is factual largely depends on which of the predictions is proven true. But whichever way you look at it, a hell of a lot of mass is missing.

Yeah but either way, its a lot better than sying the matter disappeared by God due to Intelligent Disappearance.

I didn't say that was what I was suggesting. I was just saying that just because science can't detect something - doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

The law of gravity describes and quantifies the attraction between two objects. But the law of gravity doesn't explain what gravity is or why it might work in this way. That's because that kind of explanation falls into the realm of theory. And the theory that explains gravity is the theory of general relativity.

What gravity causes is a law. What gravity is, is a theory.

Yes there is. See the Newtons law of universal gravitation. :)

It is not scientific fact, its not even to the point of scientific theory I believe. Its the best hypothesis they have of why we can't find a large portion of matter in the universe.

To expand on this dark matter is believed to account for 23% of the universe's mass, not 98%. It is theorized to exist to explain the movement of large stellar objects such as galaxies. Its not fact.

Suppose you're in the middle of a desert and see a shadow of a tree. Even though you don't see the tree you'd theorize that one was there to create that shadow. I suppose Intelligent Design folks would explain it away as the miracle of jesus or mary or something. But this is akin to dark matter. Just because we can't see it doesn't mean its not there. We just haven't found out how to properly detect it yet.

Evolutionary theory is also logical. There are verifiable portions of the theory we can observe in real time. You can also look at two examples of "evolution" by the creation of 2 species. One is the mule. Its not a donkey or a horse, and its also sterile. You would call this an evolutionary dead end. The second new species is this insect. Show me one scientist who has not been laughed out by the scientific community. You can't scientifically prove God. You can however show that at one point in time there were a bunch of animals, and then they all went away, and then you get a bunch of other animals to appear that aren't like the first bunch, and they went away too. This seems to keep on happening, and eventually some of these animals start sticking around only slightly different than the ones before them.

The problem with intelligent design, and those that believe in it, is that they want to fill in the gaps with "God did it". Scientists that actually believe in God will look at it as "God started it up, let's see how it all runs. If everything else follows a scientifically logical path then the gaps must be the same way too, we just have to find them."

God is not a magician. God is a scientist.

You can ask anyone in any field of science, they (hopefully at least), enjoy what they do. Regardless of religious beliefs. Also, they enjoy it for the same reason, they just differ on where it all came from. A atheist and a christian scientist can both sit and study an amoeba or DNA/RNA strands, or fossil formations and both be equally fascinated by it. Explaining the origin of something should not interfere with our want of knowledge, or our pursuit of the sciences.

3th, a lot of that has to do with sanitation and whatnot. Also, you're taking the quote out of context. If you read back in Genesis, because of man's evil nature, God shortened the lifespan of a man from several hundred years, to roughly one-hundred and twenty. Secondly, that quote, is in refrence to spiritual life, and death.
It doensn't take any sort of special power to observe a morally corrupt and degenerative person and know for sure that they are dead on the inside. (Though the chance for life and revitalization still exists. I know, I'm walking proof of that.)

i have something wacky for you people to wrap your heads around:

wages of sin = death

average life span of a human around 1796: about 24 years

average life span of a human around 1896: about 48

average life span of a human US citizen today: about 78

today's preachers on the TV: today's society is wrought with more sin than we used to be...

have the wages of sin not been adjusted for inflation recently or what? :D

(and yes i am aware that people in the bible lived for like 1000 years or more ;))

Intelligent design is a fancy phrase for creationism, and that again suggests that there is some invisible power in the universe.... the thing with dark matter is, you have the matter, and you know something is missing. You don't have Satan and know something is missing.

I suppose you also think evolution is logical? Not going to start a debate about that here, but you'll find that modern science (even atheistic science) disproves evolution and supports the case for intelligent design (and I spend lots of my spare time reading science journals - so I should know). So if we're talking logic as scientific fact, then you're all illogical (and I'll paste the references if you want as well).

Besides, Christianity is something that is EXPERIENCED, not PROVEN. You can't PROVE or DISPROVE God, but if you have an experience with Him, you can't deny He exists. So, really, this discussion is pointless. I would die for what I believe - because I've experienced something that I believe is worth dying for. And no-one is in a position to judge it as "wrong" or "stupid".

Its draws parallels with the whole Dark Matter thing. No one can see it, you can't weigh it, but somewhere 98% of the universe's mass is missing. Logical? No, probably not. But it sure is scientific fact.

*sigh* Threads that start with and/or include the words "please don't let this turn into a flame war" tend to turn a bit nasty... i really hope it doesn't get too far again. AS for my views on anything religious well... we'll find out when we die won't we?

wont we....

Ben: "You see the good thing about being an atheist is that when i die.. if im wrong.. i'll find out! Whereas when a theist dies and it turns out he's wrong.. he'll never know!"

Me: "But what about me? Im Agnostic!"

Ben: "Well.. your just awkward."

you dont need to measure gravity, its effects have been measured before. if you are in freefall (that is to say, the only force acting on you is gravity, read: neglect air resistance) you will acelerate at -9.8 m/(s^2) due to the pull of gravity. so, therefore you CAN see, and feel the effects of gravity. Hence the reason sir issac newton alledgedly had an apple fall on his head when he thought of the concept of gravity. :D

Your point is..? I never said you have to measure gravity, I said it is measurable and quite easy to observe in everyday life, therefore, it is logical.
