I wouldn't call myself a hippie, nor would I call many of my friends hippies. There is one dude who might be called a hippie, only cuz he lives in Ocean Beach, a very hippie part of town. I support nuclear power Buzz. In my opinion the only other power that is long term feasible is Hydro-Electric. I didn't initiate recycling brother, IMO it is a good idea regardless of the toll it takes overall. I speak/type on behalf of my opinions and feelings on a subject. You blast everything every body says with statistics and your own opinion. Good for you! I hope it succeeds on making you feel better about yourself cuz to me IMO its just the same old blah blah from you. Republicans, in general, and IMO, would have the world swiss cheesed with drilling and a great many money making schemes with zero concern for the people that aren't among them. Thats why there is an opposition. If the opposition against the Republican agenda didn't exist you would either be rich or dirt poor. Living is a poisonous environment or in a HEPA controlled one, depending on whether you were rich or poor. I recycle, not for any other reason than it is an option and maybe it spares the world some trouble down the road, since we don't know what the future holds until it gets here, statistics be damned. Currently it isn't because during the building of the factory at any point a regulation in how something is made gets changed they must go back and rip out that portion and redo it even if they are finished with that part and are 10 steps ahead of it. Hell get them to actually build a regular power plant too. It doesn't just require more "energy" to recycle. It also generates actual pollution. Look at paper as an example. Any paper has to go through a de-inking process. That leaves a sludge waste product that is definitely nasty. Sure you may not be using more of the resources that plastic is made from but you're putting more pollution into the air and water and using other resources, and time to do this recycling. Also don't forget about the additional trucks you have driving around collecting the recylables. More vehicles means more exhaust means more pollution. Reducing is good, you generate less waste, and will save money in the process because you use less. Reusing is again good. You make the stuff last longer and aren't tossing it out. Recycling is not good, with the exception of aluminum. It costs 3X's as much to handle recyclables as it does regular garbage. 40% of what you put into recycling ends up in a landfill anyways. Its bad, not good for the environment. Recycling aluminum is the only beneficial recycling out there. All other recycling results in more energy usage than the production of new material. I want all other trash thrown away into the polymer lined landfills that are required to not leak anything into the surrounding area. There is enough space in our landfills for a very long time. Flux nails it. You can't just say "the rich should pay for it". If you do that's redistribution of wealth. Who will have the motivation to work hard and be successful if all your hard work is just going to be taxed? Personally I think our current tax code dampens self-motivation too much already. Also, simply throwing money at our school system won't fix it. We've already seen that fail. But our universities and colleges are no joke. They are amongst the top in the world. I don't need to post some statistics to prove that; all of you already know it. People around the world want to go to school in America. You don't make a better society by culturing elitism. And many developing countries yield educated and successful people who were taught by Americans working for US government-funded aid. Rich people get to keep their money because that's the right they have in America as a private individual. If that person wants to keep their money and be greedy, then they have the right to do it. It's an inborn right that everyone has as an individual. Total freedom of wealth while having it concentrated on some people and taxed is better than a government being completely totalitarian about distribution of wealth. If you think that people in the US are starving, then you're wrong. Sure, there are poor people, but that's inevitable in every society. A society with no poor people is a utopia, and those don't exist. A government can only do as much as it can to help the poor, and the US government has a welfare system in which they skim off more tax money from the rich people. And the US does spend its money on many other things than military and war. That issue is just what the rest of the world wants to see because it directly involves them. But like I said before, much of the wealth you see isn't controlled by the government, so therefore can't be spent on things that people say the government ought to do. _______________ When great gentlemens come together in a place.
