If you don't know yet, anyone can now download Windows Vista Beta 2 for free. I decided to give it a go. I've been using it for a few days now and here are my preliminary observations: 1. Except for pretty graphics, which are still rather glitchy, I don't see anything truly innovative. And most of the eye candy offered in Vista has been available on Linux for ages. 2. More secure? More like more annoying. Every other thing you want to do in Vista, you have to confirm. "Are you sure you want to allow this program to change this setting?" Yes, damn it, I just clicked the button did I not? It is so annoying that you end up disabling it. Fantastic security. Oh yeah, it can now scan for "malware". It does not give you any details on what the hell it is scanning for though, so you just have to take Microsoft's word that your computer is clean. There are other so-called "security enhancements" which are worth squat to the real power user. I would still end up installing my own anti-virus, spyware remover, firewall, etc... 3. Minimum requirements. 'nuff said. 4. Driver support stinks. This might just be because of Beta, but it took me an hour to find/install half of the drivers I needed. I still have one "Unknown device" I don't know what to do with and most of the drivers I installed aren't perfect. My USB mouse never works on boot, I have to unplug it and plug it back in every time for it to start working. 5. The only game I tried playing on Vista so far is World of Warcraft. My FPS is lower than with XP. Yay. 6. The reason why I only tried World of Warcraft is because most of my other games are backed up as ISO image files on my HD, and I have to mount them using some sort of virtual CD/DVD drive software, such as Daemon tools, and none of them work with Vista yet. I realize that most of the annoyances are probably due to the Beta status, but I doubt it will impress me much on release. After so many years in development I really expected an innovative OS. Instead, they give us the same old crap covered in a shiny new layer of paint. Thanks for nothing. Another Microsoft product I will not be buying.
