Router question | |

Hey guys,
My dad's put this setting on the router whereby it cuts the internet off during certain times and then allows it during others. He says I'm "too dumb" and won't be able to figure it out myself as there is a way to prevent it without logging into the router's IP settings and changing it like that. Maybe I am too stupid, hence my question here But yeah, anybody got any ideas? If you need any information about anythin', just say _______________ - Even if Carlsberg made "w*nkers", Christiano Ronaldo would still be the biggest "w*nker" in the world |

Cuzza: here's what to do.
As said before the only way to do this is reset your router to factory default settings. The neat thing is your router is also a DSL modem, so theres very little chance of being able to set this back up yourself without Dad knowing. You're going to have to call your ISP to have them walk you through setting up your modem again. Generally an excuse like "oh my stupid younger brother messed up the router so i had to default it" will do away with suspicion on the ISP end. You'll likely need to verify your account with your ISP when you call. Find ISP documentation before you call them. Things to look for are your account number, a username, and a password. Most ISP's mail this stuff to you when you sign up. If you're crafty you may be able to bamboozle your support rep into fixing your stuff without properly authenticating yourself. A proper display of arrogance, ignorance, and a good showing of various ofther non-trivial information (acct holder date of birth, addresses, and the like) may help you out. Also, knowing the credit card number used to order service may help you if you can't find your ISP username and password. Make sure you have plenty of time to do this. It can take a while for your ISP to set you back up, so make sue to do it while Dads off at work or something. Book at the very least an hour to do this. That ZyXel takes me back. I used to work on DSL/ATM modems a whoooole lot back at an old job. Let me know if you have any questions about it. _______________ My car is made of Nerf. |

Thanks Exar, gonna have alot of fun with this
Edit: If I knew all the ISP settings, I would actually do this, but because it restores everything to its factory settings, then I'm screwed haha. Also, my dad would probably just shove a 3G card into his laptop and work off that. _______________ - Even if Carlsberg made "w*nkers", Christiano Ronaldo would still be the biggest "w*nker" in the world This comment was edited by CuZzA on Nov 12 2006 10:24pm. |

My point is that if he is paying the bills, he has the right to decide how long you spend using that facility he is paying for, and you dont have a right to get stroppy and try and go against his wishes. Sounds like he has his own reasons for limiting it too, so maybe you should respect the rules he has laid down, like Buzz said, that will work out much better for you in the long run as he will see you can be trusted. Paying the bills? Lol. Whether or not I use the internet, the price will stay the same, so I dunno what you're on about. The whole family uses the same connection.
It also takes alot less effort for him as if he just keeps it on, he doesn't have to change the times for the weekend and weekdays. And Kauyon, like I said previously, I haven't been naughty or anything lol. He just says he doesn't want me on my PC for as long but considering I'm doing more than my advised daily amount of exercise and I do all my homework when possible, there's nothing else. Edit: Oh, and also Gil, I have actually asked to pay for one months internet access so he can take all the times off, he still said no. _______________ - Even if Carlsberg made "w*nkers", Christiano Ronaldo would still be the biggest "w*nker" in the world This comment was edited by CuZzA on Nov 12 2006 05:27pm. |

When your paying the bills, demand as much net access as you want. Until then surely you should just be grateful for what you get. _______________ |JAA| since 02/05/06 Green for life |

From the model number, make etc you've posted, it's reasonably easy to find out at very least the default admin password and master bypass for your router.
However, I do think that it's worth asking the question; why are you restricted access to the internet in the first place? Don't post here if you don't want to, msn me even. I'd rather not be assisting something like this at all, least of all if it wasn't entirely necissary or just. _______________ -Kauyon Draconis [Official master of Ataris] |

I have done that, yes! That's my point, I'm trying to say he's just being arkward for some reason. Quote: BUT at the same time, sounds like your dad is challenging you to try lol I don't know.
He said that I'm "too dumb" in such a way that only subtly could you interpret what he was really saying. If he goes all psycho-dad on me, then I'll just say "Well, you said I was too dumb. In a nutshell, you wanted me to learn stuff, so I did. Now reward me " But we'll see what happens. If theres anything the JA taught me its to resist tyrannical authority. What kind of router is it. I'll tell you how to set it to factory defaults and then reset it up. What kind of internet connection do you have at home?
Constructive. Quote: Yes I think you should be a good little boy and listen to your father for several reasons. If you demonstrate maturity and understanding you can probably find compromise to have the internet on at times that will allow you to be on it more or even increase the time it is on. If you attempt to circumvent it and get busted then say bye bye to any time on the computer.
Not constructive. <3 Klaude. Cuzza, can you get hold of the model number please? Yes because not listening to your parents when you live in their house, under their rules, when they could easily restrict your access even more is obviously the good thing to do. Recommending that you act like an adult with your parents and try to discuss things maturely and reasonably with them in an effort to compromise so you'll have their approval in being on more, and pointing out that if you take the childish way and get caught you'll possibly wind up even further restricted, is no help at all. Solitude, I'm betting what I said didn't even enter Cuzza's mind before deciding on what to do. He never considered acting maturely, and he never thought that what he's trying to do could wind up hurting him even more. Sorry, I must have forgotten to tell you that I've been acting maturely for 7 months now. Must have slipped my mind. What you don't understand is the fact that it's not being restricted because I'm being naughty, it's just my dad being too plain arkward! Basically, I can't do my homework until 7pm. So what do I do for three hours beforehand? It gets dark at like 5 now, so it's pointless playing any sort of sport. I go the gym and/or swimming every day so excercise isn't a problem. _______________ - Even if Carlsberg made "w*nkers", Christiano Ronaldo would still be the biggest "w*nker" in the world |
