Are there any security issues with unpure servers? My clan maintains an unpure server, and I'm wanting to make sure it won't get hacked, or implode, etc.

Setting sv_pure on the server will make the server run an MD5 checksum comparing it's data files (the pk3's) to the connecting client's data files. An MD5 sum is a way to boil the characteristics of a file down to a single string, and (most of the time) each file has a unique MD5 sum, so your assets1.pk3 file should have the same md5sum as the server's assets1.pk3 file, and so on.
Anyhow, setting sv_pure compares these md5sumb, and if it sees that two files don't match up then the server won't let you connect. This prevents cheaters from getting into the server by editing pk3 files that the server also has. As stated by others though it's not a foolproof way to keep cheaters out. There are a number of ways to jack with your game that can get around sv_pure. Unfortunately JA lacks punkbuster support, so your best bet is to set sv_pure 1 and exercise much dilligence as an admin to keep your community free from idiots. Unless you use a mod, the same exploits will remain - crashing will be easy.
Quote: Well users can use custom pk3 files which means unpure server can read them... As far as i know, the server doesn't access any of the pk3's on your pc. True and nvm X) _______________ Still here | My Lightsaber |

Yeah no security difference between pure and unpure.
Quote: Otherway It takes the tools out from the hackers what makes it more harder for them... Pure won't stop them from hacking the server. This comment was edited by Vision on Apr 10 2007 02:02pm. |

Unpure servers...Well users can use custom pk3 files which means unpure server can read them... Well what if unpure server read some code, what asks "can you realize /killserver command"... exactly b00m!!!!
