Does anyone know of a REALLY good site with UNIX info? Commands, news, kernel updates and millions of other things?

Ok! I got it working! I made those boot floppies with fdimage.exe and it worked like a charm. However! I am definately gonna need that entire handbook for the install and future setup. Is there a better way to get this info than printing it out? What I mean is...is there a GOOD book out there for freeBSD? From install through admin?

Edit: I know about www.freebsdmall.com but what I'm lookin' for is a recommendation.:)

The 4.7 mini ISO is fine. If you're not booting from that cd you'll need to download the kern.flp and mfsroot.flp disk images and put them on diskette with the fdimage utility (its on the CD in the /tools directory). You can get the floppy images here:

ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/4.7-RELEASE/floppies/

DJ~
I have the following ISO image burned to CD:

4.7-mini.iso

However, I can't boot from it. Do I need all of the images from that release that are available from www.freebsd.org ? Or should this be working? Let me know when you can.

You should be able to boot from the freebsd install CD if your system and cd drive support it. If not it's a good idea to copy those kern and msfroot floppy images to some diskettes to be safe.

You should follow the instructions at the FreeBSD handbook http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/index.html. But if you have any questions please bring em to me. :)

Note: If you're new to UNIX you *will* screw this up at least once. Don't get discouraged though. Keep on truckin'. It's part of the learning process. :)

Ok, want to have FreeBSD. However, I absolutely, positively, without a slight hint of doubt, *REFUSE* to pay for it...and then there's the fact that the downloads will take 3 hours minimum. :P Any ideas? I hung out at http://www.freebsd.org and really didn't quite catch the whole install process. Seems that they pretty much expect you to already have it on CD. Then there's the thing with the two floppies.......grrrrrr.....Ok, I give up...help!

Sup,

Fizz for ur at home Unix experience I would recommend FreeBSD to start it has the most userfriendly install (of the BSD's). U will need to do 3 three things to get ur feet wet.

1. Recompile ur kernel
2. Download and install X windows
2.1 Set up a window manager
3. Play with everything
3.1 check out /etc most system config files are kept thier

FreeBSD does not have the driver support u will be used to in Windows or linux. So go to thier website and make sure you check for hardware compability.

OS X is based of the FreeBSD 4.4 kernel (i think that is the right version number)

So u will notice similiarities between the 2 OS's

Well, I am thinking of taking a position as a network administrator that is using an OS X Jaguar server. Since OS X is UNIX based I want to have a stronger feel for it. I've been playing with RedHat Linux for over a year now but I'm not sure if it's enough. I want to work with something at home that will be GOOD practice.

well, I am into Linux.
I've used redhat, slack and mandrake, staying with mandrake now.
And I'm searching a new AIX for my RS/6000.
