I suddenly realized that there were two popular versions of the song.
The original is by Tears for Fears and a newer version is by Gary Jules

I was wondering what version people prefer. I really enjoy Gary's, but Tears for Fears wins it for me.

I think Tears for Fears takes a different perspective for the song. Not a wrong perspective; they look at it as a distressful time rather than a depressing time. Which adds up to the fast pace and upbeat moments. A genius song it is, but I think it's not solely limited to one genre of music.

Gary Jules

Can feel the song allot better, better tempo and better accents on critical words and notes.

Its a sad song not a pop song, Tears for Fears wrote a great song and tried to make it fit the 80's scene.

Gary Jules' although i love the Tears for Fears version too. Jules' version of the song works so well in Mad World it just makes it even more haunting and emotive to me so thats why my vote goes for him.

There are more than 2 versions of this song.

There are also Sacre, Evergreen Terrace (A bit heavy) and another version by Gary Jules which includes more percussion.

Personally I think that Gary Jules did a good re-make of it but I hate Tears for Fears the band its self with a passion.

Fan of both because I love the song, but Tears for Fears is one of my favorite 80's bands, so I'm kind of biased.

However, Donnie Darko is one of my favorite movies. The use of Gary Jule's version in that song was incredibly... appropriate? There really could not have been a better song to put right there, even if it was the number two choice. Don't remember what the producer's first choice was...

I did not knew the original one and Donnie Darko was the one where I first heard it. That is why I prefer the one made by Gary Jules.

without the original, there would have been no cover :) so...

plus:
with tears for fears version, i find the difference between the sound and lyrics pretty cool, has some kind of insanity to it :)

that's my 2 cent there :)
