Spider-man 3 [possibly containing spoilers]

Possibly some minor spoliers in the review, though I haven't had any complaints yet. Just a warning.

Spider-man 3, though not nearly as good as the second, is not as bad as it's getting made out to be. As far as the film it's self goes (excluding how true it was to the comic, that is), the movie was right on. It may have been slightly pasted together at points, and some parts may have been tacked on for no real reason, but the movie succeeds on most levels. Most notably the amazing CG, and the characters Flint Marko and Harry Osborn.

First of all, the CG in this movie was noticeably better than the second, which in turn makes it near incomparable to the poor CG in the first film. This movie actually makes it difficult to tell when Spider-man is and isn't a CG creation. Also, despite the numerous complaints I've heard about Venom (and rightfully so) the character looked great. However, here was the show stealer that I call the Sandman. Everytime Marko was on screen, whether completely or only partially in sand form, he looked completely believable. Well, as believable as a man made out of sand can be, really.

Though the Sandman was my favorite character, it was very close with Harry Osborn. James Franco played what can only be described as two separate roles. One being the fun-loving friend of Peter Parker and Mary Jane, and the other the sadistic killer bent on Spidey's destruction. Shockingly, he did excellently. I have never been a big fan of James Franco, but I was very pleasantly surprised as to how well he actually did.

Having said that, I do have my problems, or rather problem, with the new Green Goblin: his suit. It's ridiculous. It looks like something out of a cheesy sci-fi flick. The Green Goblin suddenly wears black? It make no sense.

The Sandman, Goblin, and Spider-man are just three of the numerous characters in this flick. Possibly too many. Others of importance include Venom, Mary Jane, Gwen Stacey, and surprisingly Dr. Connors. With all these characters, it's obvious that this movie has a lot going on. Possibly too much. There is so much infact that he seems pasted together at times. The scenes don't always mesh well because of how many separate plot lines there are at once. However, this is a minor complaint at most, mostly because this problem isn't always around. Sometimes Raimi manages to tie the plot lines together amazingly.

I'd like to get back to the characters now though. As aforementioned there are way too many main characters in this flick, and some had no real reason to be there. Most notably are Venom and Gwen Stacey. Sam Raimi has said himself that he had no intention of putting Venom into this movie, but Sony demanded that the fan favorite be added in last minute to help fill seats. Nearly all scenes involving Venom seem to be just tacked on, and only there to please fan boys. Which, somewhat ironically, I highly doubt it actually did, considering what ends up happening to the well known villain.

Now on to what everyone really hated about this movie, and that is now truthful it was to the comic. It wasn't, not at all really. The Green Goblin wore black, Eddie Brock's character was revamped, the Sandman was altered completely (this is arguably the biggest change, but I think it worked to the movie's advantage), and there were also some significant changes to Harry Osborn's character aside from the suit. Some of these changes still referenced what happened in the comic book, and were only minor alterations. For instance the Goblin character and his redemption. However, the movie also decided to make the petty criminal Flint Marko a man who only did these crimes in an attempt to save his dying daughter. Despite Marko not having a daughter in the comics, and just generally being a bad person. Then there is Venom. I won't ruin what they changed with him (aside from the obvious things like Brock not being much older than Peter and completely ripped), but when you see the movie, you will know.

Now that we have covered all my likes and dislikes with the supporting character, I'd like to move onto the title character. Spider-man (both traditional and black suit) was great. You all know how Spidey acts with his traditional suit; however, it's a very nice surprise when you see how cocky he acts when the symbiote takes him over. He seems to be out for blood at all times, and participates in the movies greatest action/fight sequence with Harry Osborn during this time.

When Spider-man finally does defeat the symbiote, and begins to make things right, it really does make the audience feel good. Speaking of which, this movie has a few feel good scenes, the most notable involves the Goblin, which I won't go into as I don't want to spoil anything.

All in all, Spidey does a good job of satisfying the audience, though he will leave some fan boys ranting and raving. I was one of them. At first, I gave this flick a big thumbs down. However, after sleeping on it, and thinking back, I'm going to reverse my judgement and give it a thumbs up. I'd recommend it to all audiences, and remind the fan boys of Spider-man that Spider-man movies are a separate continuity from the comic book and cartoons.

Great movie, very busy though, made me dizzy at points with all the plot flying around.

Nice of Harry to be a man instead of the little boy his father was.

Yeah, Haden-Church floored the others in terms of acting.

I guess I'm used to Maguire leading Spiderman.

Just waiting for Iron Man now <3

You like Tobey? I've never been that big of a fan, really. I think Topher Grace would have played a better Peter Parker, actually.

Thomas Haden Church was easily the best though.

The credits can list him as the "New Goblin" all they want, Harry Osborn is the Green Goblin, everyone in the theatre knew that, despite his black suit lol.

Thomas Haden-Church = awesome.

Topher Grace - Decent actor - but maybe better as someone different.

Tobey - good as usual.

James Franco - I love the sudden change from his amnesiac self back to his angry self. And he wasn't the green goblin, the credits themselves said he was the "new goblin"

As fara s I'm concerned, it was a very good movie but didn't elevate itself above the others, merely supplied satisfaction, not awe.

This movie was plain awesome and I loved all the action. Totally worth the reduced fee for a movie ticket. :D

It did feel like they tried squeezing in too many bad guys though. As someone said it probably would've been better if they had Venom on his own for the fourth movie...

venom was sooooooooooooooooooooooo mis cast

Yep for sure. It's really annoying because I remember how awesome Venom was in the cartoons and putting Topher Grace in with fake pointy teeth just sucked balls.

That reminds me, they better have Carnage in the next movie. Venom and Carnage are so cool goddamn

I liked the costumeless fight vs. Harry a lot. Especially the very end. That was awesome.

Good film although i felt it didn't handle the long length as well as some similarly long films - it dragged a bit. Certainly went for the whole redemption/forgiveness theme.

Pretty nice collection there man. I don't quite have the wallet for that stuff right now. Maybe when I get a little more established in life, but it's hard to afford stuff like that in college, haha. I used to buy when I was younger, but now I just download comic book torrents. Currently downloading 4.9 gigs of The Amazing Spider-man #1-#535.

I am tempted to buy the World War Hulk comics though, that should be great.

Anyway, back on topic, Sandman = best character in the movie.

Thank ya good sir. I am quite fertile and more than willing to spawn demon children with you.

I actually have the issue of Secret Wars where Spidey gets the black costume. Bought it for $10 at my local comic shop when I was 9 years old. Other important comics I have,

The Amazing Spider-Man #13: First appearance of Mysterio

Ghostrider issue #1

The Amazing Spider-Man #122: Death of Green Goblin

The Amazing Spider-Man #129: First appearance of The Punisher

...and my most important comic...

The Incredible Hulk #181: First appearance of Wolverine

I got a few other mildly important comics lying around but those are the goodies. I would love to sell em but I probably never will.

Well Peter did originally have webshooters, but htey just adapted that portion to the new age Spider-man. After he got turned into the Man-Spider and then back to regular Spider-man, he got stronger and able to create actual web.

I do completely agree that the comics are a seperate continuity, whcih can be seen in my review, however, GREEN Goblin. It's right there in the name GREEN. lol.

As for the info on the suit, you're pretty much on. I wish they would have used to cartoon prospective though, seeing as they introduced his son in number two.

From the main post...

Yeah, I meant green goblin, not hobgoblin. Same difference, hehe. But yeah, you know how it is with comic book movies. It's not really a movie about the comics or whatever, but rather an interpretation about the basic story of the hero. Some facts are changed, for example Spiderman's web ability being natural and not his web shootin' wrist gizmos. They also took liberties with the Sandman (Quite a few!), too.

But yeah, I guess what im trying to say is that from my perspective, Harry Osbourne is still Harry Osbourne, whether he's on a glider and in a ninja suit or not. :P

Actually in the comics Spider-Man recieves the black costume at the end of Secret Wars. He was trying to use a machine to repair his costume after his was torn apart and instead he used an alien device that gave him the symbiote. His black costume design supposedly came about because he was thinking about Spider-Woman when the suit connected to him. Hence the darker and simpler theme.

The Spider-Man cartoon had the symboite come from space when J. Johnah Jamerson's astronaut son crashed his shuttle.

And in Ultimate Spider-Man the symbiote came about from a failed experiment to cure cancer.

Sorry for my nerdiness. And if I am wrong in any of this than don't correct me becuase then you will be nerdier than me.

See the main post of this threat, silly. :P I'm actually silly, Harry wasn't the Hobgoblin, that was someone else, I believe. Harry was the new Green Goblin or whatever, according to the Marvel website.

But yeah, I got mixed up, my bad Ash. :D

The Ultimate Spiderman idea is pretty cool though. I loved the Ultimate Spiderman game. :D

Well I can understand him not using the exact same suit, but in the comics he IS the Green Goblin (harry that is) so he should have at least looked similar to his father. He was also the epitome of a split personality in this movie; it was just trauma induced rather than drug.
