Since I've used zens for a while, I'll toss in my opinion.
Zens are great for me because they are more reliable than ipods (although this is comparing older models of the zen and ipod, so it might not be true now). They lack the slick design that the ipod sports and are about 1/4 bulkier. I do, however, prefer the video playback and the varied format of the zen and they typically have a greater battery life. Bottom line for me was that the zen was better at doing all it said it would do than other mp3 players at the time I bought my last one, but the ipods were a bit better at music playback. I really want to buy an iriver clix 2, but they only seem to be available online and I'd like to see them up close before buying one. Anybody own a zune? Reviews seem favorable, but it'd be better to hear from somebody who's been using it for a while. _______________ "Deos fortioribus adesse." I own the iPod Nano with 8 Gigs of space. I carry this thingy around when I get from my car into the subway and from the subway to the work and back again. Back at the car I plug this baby into the FM transmitter on the 12V adapter of my car and listen to "Laz Radio" so to say. Additionally my iPod gets powered via the dock-interface while sticking in the FM transmitter, which is pretty handy. That's how I USE the iPod... and now to my experiences. The iPod Nano is by far my favorite music player. I love the interface and the clickwheel. You might get used to it in the beginning, but then it's a pleasure to browse through your songs with that wheel. Sound quality wise I am very happy, but I also have pretty neat headphones for it (Bose TriPort). I bought them at the same time as the iPod, so I have no clue how it sounds with the originals or other brands. What I dislike about the iPod is the exclusiveness to iTunes and that songs you upload are being renamed and some sort of crazy index is layed over them (anyone of you ever explored the iPod as Disc when music is on their? weird file names, duh!). So it's not that easy to reload your music from the iPod to your disk in an easy way, although there are some quite handy tools for it. Another con is: You also pay for the name. It's from Apple, so yeah. I guess that there are euqal mp3 players out there for much less. But I know that I got a quality product, as this thingy has never let me down so far

iPod is a nice piece of hardware in itself. But the frontrunners for sound quality is iAudio and iRiver.
