Running Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy in GNU/Linux | |

Well, since there is a Windows Vista guide, I decided to write a Linux guide. This was tested in Ubuntu Linux 8.04.2 Hardy Heron. If you use another distribution or another UNIX-like OS such as FreeBSD or Solaris, this should work as well.
Step 1: Drivers If you are reading this guide, I am assuming you already have a working Linux setup. The main problem people tend to have with running 3D games is the graphics card. You must have a 3d accelerated card that is compatible. Nvidia cards typically work the best, as they are well supported. If you have an Nvidia card such as a Geforce, but it is not detected, go to System>Admistration>Hardware Drivers and enable it. Step 2: WINE WINE is an application for Linux, BSD, Solaris and Mac used to run Windows programs. Basically, it is an emulator. You will need this in order to run Jedi Academy. Go to www.winehq.com and read the guide there to install. Step 3: Discs You need the *WINDOWS* discs. As far as I know, the Mac OS X discs are not compatible. Insert disc 1 and right click on setup.exe. Open with WINE Windows Emulator. Follow the instructions from there. Also: I personally prefer to have it installed in my Home folder. During installation, select custom install. Change path directory to Z:/home/yourusername/Lucasarts/"Jedi Knight Jedi Academy". Optional Step: Increase your FPS Some drivers, such as the Nvidia Geforce 8000 series have poor openGL support. To fix this, disable some visual settings such as the dynamic glow. This was a brief guide. I wrote it in about 10 minutes using nothing but memory. If anyone has any problems/corrections, let me know and I will fix it. It would be good if this could be stickied This post was edited by Kaldør on Feb 14 2009 12:19am. |
