What is the State of the Jedi Academy Game Community as a Whole? | |

Hey everyone, I'm back from over a year of inactivity. Before I hit the servers, I'm going to have to find a copy of the game, as I sold mine If you have a spare copy you can offer, let me know.
I've been looking around online and offline and haven't been able to find a cheap source for the game. In fact, it's relatively scare with the exception of eBay and Amazon, which are commanding premiums due to halt of production. I'm not sure of the date, but I believe last year it was probably possible to find the economy/jewel case version of the game, whereas now you can't. Which brings me to my question... Since the game title is now out of production, where has the community (not limited to the JA) gone? Is it still flourishing, or is it dying quickly? Thanks, -Ian _______________ Member #7625 | Since 7.6.04 The Archives |

Quote: It would seem logical that without copies of the software coming to market, there would have to be a dropoff in the amount of new users.
No, because people continue playing the game and many of those who don't sell the game on or give it to friends, who then play it as well. Remember also, that the game went 'gold' at release, meaning a lot of people have this game. The game is still the latest in a unique style of gameplay that many still enjoy. As old as it is, it is still the newest game in the series and probably more popular than JK2 for that reason. |

My question wasn't really philosophical, I was just curious if there has been a big dropoff of players for this game. It would seem logical that without copies of the software coming to market, there would have to be a dropoff in the amount of new users. Not a total halt, but obviously with lack of marketing and players calling it quits, it stands to reason that this community is decelerating more quickly than before...but if not, then I'm glad to hear it -Ian _______________ Member #7625 | Since 7.6.04 The Archives |

"Dead" is meaningless, "dying" is to a high degree meaningless as well, if we define it as a diminishment of activity, since all games start "dying" a couple of months after release - in fact, both words have been frequently used to describe the state of the game as early as 2004 (when i started playing). "Dead" is the completion of "dying" and is rendered meaningless by the following observation: a community cannot die, unless the foundation that makes it possible for various members of the community to interact with one another is completely wiped out, or the various members stop interacting with the foundation still intact. The foundation for the JKA community as a whole is 1) a plethora of open or closed, public or passworded servers that you can play on, and 2) websites/forums dedicated to the game and its various players (TJA, ESL, MBU, clansites) - both coextensive with one another. Unless both elements are utterly wiped out, or everybody stops using them, the game/community is not "dead", which is the main reason why jk2 is not "dead", and why even diablo 1 is not "dead". "Dead" becomes something radical that can be only achieved under extreme circumstances, i.e. nuclear warfare.
Addendum: Activity can be satisfactory or not. Right now, the Aurochs are almost as active as they used to be back in 2006; TJA classes sometimes are packed, sometimes less so, but they're still around and people frequent them; members post on the forums on an (almost) daily basis; special events are still worth organizing, and the last couple of tournaments were quite successful. _______________ Find out more about the Jedi Academy Aurochs here and more about Masta here! There are still many plenty of servers with competetive and other players on. I wouldn't even begin to call the game dead, looking at the huge server list occupying so many players. |
