TES V: Skyrim - *No Spoilers Please* | |

Cause you know you lurve it!
New info as and when it comes out. So far the release is 11.11.11 which is easy enough to remember and approx 295 days from now. Website Worth a read Four French dudes got 2 and a half hours each on a 3 month old build. Check out the roughly translated impressions here. Skyrim is the homeland of the Nords, the original home of man. As far as I know the game is set around the death of the king which happens at the start of the game. I imagine very much like the death of the Emperor in Oblivion (Skyrim takes place around 200 years after the events of TES IV). You take the role of the last of the Dovahkiin, or Dragon Born, and its up to you to deal with a civil war and some sick dragon thing. Go here for more info: Link SO! I had an idea. How about all of us looking forward to Skyrim get together on TeamSpeak on Nov. 11th? We can chat, have a laugh and discuss our experiences as we play. Anyone wanting to play in silent for a bit is welcome to drop in and out at their leisure. I think it'd be a great excuse to chat with each other again! Well, Skype didn't happen as I was busy that night. Hope everyone's enjoying Skyrim as much as I am. Can I please ask that nobody gives away any spoilers in this topic, please. You started as a farmer in Dungeon Siege. Mind you, that game didn't really need a story. Gas Powered Games just went with the "click 9 gazillion times to win" game mechanic. It can work in situations where too much story focus can get in the way of the gameplay.
However, that is not what we expect from TES. We expect a brilliant mixture of both story telling AND gameplay. Graphics I couldn't be arsed about. I will admit that Morrowind and Oblivion still wowed me in terms of sheer shineyness in their respective eras but I never cared much beyond that point. For me a game has to keep me going "wow, that's pretty neat" or "heeeells yeah! Awesome!" for about 5-6 hours on release day. Then it has to make me look forward to coming home and playing it more, instead of paying attention to the missus. If a game can't last beyond one day then it's not much of a game. This is just one of the many reasons I still swear by Bethesda. Here's looking forward to Rage from Id. In short. A good game is better than, as a Sim might say, Woohoo! _______________ -Padawan of Virtue -Brother of Menaxia, *|irael, Krynn Adept, Majno, Ris Win Juljul, DaMi3N, Beowulf, Dash Starlight, Carrock and Yuken Zalak Bartender at Munes bar. Have not played Arcania (for obvious reasons), but I still think starting an RPG outside would be a nice change. well, when you get out of the tower you have to get to the city and the most obvious way to do it is to get farmers clothes... which you can get by doing some farm errands. _______________ playing jk3 since 30th of january (2005), member since 1st of february. Quote: How about starting it outside for a change, i.e. on a farm, where you have to accomplish a variety of mundane tasks that in turn help to introduce the player to the gameplay and serve as a mini-tutorial. This fits neatly with my idea of starting out as a commoner instead of an aristocrat or, in this case, a criminal.
well you started last two games as a criminal which is ok imo. however starting in prison again is pretty lame. farmer? im not so sure, gothic 2 and that blasphemous game called arcania started in farms. hopefully this time beginning will be not tragicly epic, but some fucked up shit lol well as long as i can kill innocent person right outside the prison and get invited into dark brotherhood... i should be fine _______________ playing jk3 since 30th of january (2005), member since 1st of february. Oblivion started in a prison! I was hoping at least something slightly different.....maybe the basement of a crazy nord under the influence of skooma? _______________ "Deos fortioribus adesse." |

But that would break the unspoken law that states every contemporary RPG must begin in some dark, rocky tunnel.. and a prison is nothing but a creative twist on the rocky tunnel formula. _______________ Find out more about the Jedi Academy Aurochs here and more about Masta here! Married to Kain. |

You start off in a prison again? I was hoping something along the lines of maybe being ambushed by a dragon and somehow escaping. _______________ "Deos fortioribus adesse." |

Quote: Yup, the dynamic finishers make the combat system look more fluid and remind me a bit of dark messiah. The fact that you play someone special from the very start of the game is a bit unoriginal though - I mean, you do have to become special at some point, but the predestination feature could be handled differently. You could start out as a normal commoner and then be chosen by the gods or something equally more fun - being the 'dragonborn' sounds too aristocratic for my taste. Also, let's hope they keep the headbob from the trailer :p
But yeah, my first impressions don't differ as that greatly from my first impressions of oblivion back a few years ago: 1. Holy snaps that looks awesome 2. Holy snaps my PC won't ever be able to run this They said you don't know that you are the dragonborn at the beginning of the game. You'll just start in prison and you can still choose whoever you want to be. But yeah ofcourse everyone knows already that you are the dragonborn. But whatever you know you are going to be a great hero in every elder scrolls game. The trailer looks indeed amazing. And my pc isn't going to be able to run it. But I'm buying a new one for it. The architecture really looks amazing too, like I said they couldn't have picked a better province. _______________ May the force be with you. And may the academy stand forever! |

RPGs are becoming more immersive, albeit more watered down on the strategy side. From what I read about TESV, NPCs will have families and if you kill an NPC that owns a shop their family takes over that shop. I read that there will be cooking in the game, so we might see a hardcore option in TESV where your character becomes hungry and thirsty like in Fallout NV. _______________ "Deos fortioribus adesse." |
Masta - Jedi Council |
I think modern free-roaming open-world RPGs need to deepen the extent of the player's interactability with the environment. Throwing around furniture, picking up everything that is not nailed to the ground and beating up every single NPC just doesn't cut it anymore. What is needed is the power to alter the game world itself, not radically I might add, but cutting and sowing trees, picking and planting various flora are the first steps to what made minecraft so famous. We already have the option to craft our own gear, build our own forts and castles from outside of the game by means of editing tools, but how much better would it be to integrate such features (to a lesser extent, of course) into the gameplay itself? _______________ Find out more about the Jedi Academy Aurochs here and more about Masta here! I just love the elder scrolls games. Morrowind was just plain awesome. Oblivion was great too but it lacked some of the features in morrowind. Though I think Oblivion made up for that with better graphics and the physics engine which made marksman much more fun(picking up arrows) for example.
Quote: I wonder what they will do to make up for how much smaller Skyrim is compared to Cyrodil.
They said Skyrim will be about the same size as Cyrodiil. I think it might be a bit smaller but they say it looks larger because of the mountains. Quote: Back in a time where if you wanted a house, you just killed all the occupants and took it.
Those were the times. Though I liked it that you could have a house in oblivion it was rather lame. Only one of the houses in Oblivion had a quest. In morrowind you could only get a house if you were a high ranking member of one of the great houses and you saw how the house was build. Now that woodcutting and crafting will be in TESV maybe you could make a small hut yourself. Quote: I hope they'll abolish fast travel, I'd like the travelling to be more meaningful.
I completely agree. I'm currently playing Fallout New Vegas with no fast travel at all. I'd recommend doing this to everyone, especially in TESV. There is just so much to see if you don't use fast travel. You'll get more playtime out of the game and you'll have seen more of the world. You can probably finish the Oblivion mainquest without having seen half of Cyrodiil. Well I'm really exited about it, probably more exited than ever before about a game release. I've been waiting for this since I finished the Oblivion mainquest. Also they couldn't have picked a better province than Skyrim. I just love vikings and Bloodmoon was the best part of Morrowind along with mods like Castle Solstheim. _______________ May the force be with you. And may the academy stand forever! |
