heh, I find it amusing when people are debating on games. It is almost like debating on general philosophy :D

So please tell us what game are you playing to right now? and give quick review of it, Did you like it or not?

Maybe somebody is getting inspiration to play the same game as you...

The Genre can be anything from computer/console games to good old fashioned board games to tag to RL RPG to browser games...etc

Lately I have been playing MyBrute, Pokemon on GBA, Dragonball Adventures on GBA, S.T.A.L.K.E.R and Chess

Not much to review...

I just got myself a copy of ME3. I can't wait to install and play it, although I'll have to finish ME2 first. Heck, I also found COD4:MW, an older game, but pretty good and I haven't played it yet. :)

Yeah, ME1 is great, ME2 is amazing too. I'm really looking forward to ME3, my expectations are way up there.

I am glad I still have my save file from the last time I played ME2 exactly the way I wanted to :)

Heh, I'm replaying ME1, so I can import my character into ME2. I've finished ME2 before, but I didn't have ME1 back then so I couldn't import.

I must admit, that last post from Masta sums it all up pretty much.

While thinking about Gothic, something completely different came across my mind which triggered some nostalgia as well. Who played and maybe still remembers Sacrifice?

I must admit that, although I find Gothic 1 to be absolutely superb, I cannot help but think of Gothic 2 as an improved version of Gothic 1. This may be partially due to me being introduced to the Gothic series via the second game, but I do believe that my opinion has merit beyond mere subjective nostalgia. Gothic 2 just seems like a more refined game in general, but even then, if one were to take both games together, and considering how the second game can be seen as an extension and completion of the first one, then they would together rank incredibly high compared to the vast majority of RPGs out there.

it was a worthy sequel, but id say gothic 1 is a little underrated atleast thats why i understood from most people that i talked to. :/
in my opinion gothic 1 had so much better storyline (now that i think about it, skyrim is almost ripoff of gothic 2 story lol!) and the freedom and some siding choices that gothic series provide were not the number 1 reason why it was good.
Quote:
And as for Arcania: It shall never be put into the same sentence as "Gothic"

thats what i tell people as well. they are like gothic 4: arcania. im like what? gothic 4 never came out, there is just some random crappy game called arcania lol

gothic 3 wasnt as bad as i thought... it is however one of the better examples where big world is not neccesarily a good thing. way too many npcs that have absolutely no meaning in the game. 99% of them have no background, story to tell, character etc. whats the other 1% however? i think its quite easy to guess.

gothic series is most likely dead.
risen was ok... it didnt have such involving world and characters however.

Gothic 2 was a good sequel, but inferior to Gothic 1.

And true, Gothic 3 was a train wreck beyond limits - but that happens when the cash symbols are the only thing in the eyes of publishers (and some devs as well - the devs are never without fail - even when the pub is the one pushing).

Anyways, a game that had to utilize unoffical community patches to be kinda playable (after a span of about 3 years) is a train wreck :D

And as for Arcania: It shall never be put into the same sentence as "Gothic" :)

EDIT: Gothic 3 apparently came out the way it was (namely unfinished) due to pressures from the publisher. And Gothic 4, well... yeah :p

If anyone thinks about a complete change of pace I can recommend Aquaria.

It was part of the first Humble Indie Bundle, which I got as a gift.

Basically Aquaria is a kinda-metroid style game with exploration and backtracking, taking place underwater. It features a very interesting soundtrack for all them audiophile people (like myself to a certain extend) and has a kinda unique ability system where you sing notes to activate your powers.

Might be the right game to take a break from many other, graphically more sophisticated games.

Anyone here play or have heard of Neptune's Pride of Solium Infernum? I recently re-read the Rock Paper Shotgun game diaries of them and it has rekindled my desire to play them.

If you haven't a clue what they are you should read the RPS articles: here and here. Great stuff.

and I think people are pretty bitter about it. Can't say I blame them as it's a shame there'll be no more in-depth saber games for a long time, or maybe ever.

Doesn't mean people need to get sour grapes and criticise a much more popular game at every opportunity. I think if I made a hundred posts about how JKA sucks (which it does, barring certain aspects of multiplayer) they'd be less well received

does that mean that some people should DEFEND it at every opportunity tho?
we arent bashing TOR, because JKA is dead. thats why your post didnt make sense - JKA's state has nothing to do with people bashing the 'more popular game'... which is also a rather weird title - not every popular thing is an example of genuine quality.

your comparison is quite odd also. you really expect a community that was built on jedi knight series to feel otherwise?

i mean masta makes an occasional joke on SWTOR part of the forum... you come here and make a joke on his opinion. now who is better? if we had to choose id say no one.
this isnt some kind of war so dont try and make it look like one.

I know, the series seems really odd, but on the other hand, it is rather successful in an equally odd way (minus Quake4 I guess - a lot of people seem to dislike that one).

i dislike quake 4 as well. gameplay just felt different and somewhat static.
i also wasnt sure about the style of the game - i feel it was a little too modern. previous games had rather weird weapon designs, yet quake 4 went for the more generic weapon feel.
also how could i forget the teleporting and disappearing enemies. i think id speak for most quake players - people want to explode those corpses so that they see blood all over the the walls. that wasnt possible in quake 4.
in a way, even with a very cool stroggification cutscene in singleplayer game... it didnt feel dark or violent enough.

Eica, this is not the place to discuss your opinions on people's antipathy towards TOR.

Quote:

anyway quake series is odd.
gameplay aside.... quake 1 is extremely dark atmopshere game (soundtrack is insane) where you battle demons... quake 2 is dark (a bit less than q1 i guess), but now you are against evil strogg.
quake 3? an arena, quite bright little worlds where you battle psychos.
quake 4, strogg again, a little more colorful than last time youve seen them.

i dont know... comparing all that to some random series of these days... quake just seems so unexpectedly weird. not in a bad way i guess.
I know, the series seems really odd, but on the other hand, it is rather successful in an equally odd way (minus Quake4 I guess - a lot of people seem to dislike that one). Quake 1 seems incredibly random in terms of level design and plot - in fact, it's plot is even more random than that of Doom1/2. The gameplay, however, is where the game shines and I think it is truly unique and quite different in many regards compared to its successors and other types of old-school FPS, and that is something I only recently had the pleasure of finding out. Definitely recommending it to everyone who enjoys old-style FPS games.

I actually missed out on this gem way back in the days and jumped straigth into Quake 2. Its predecessor is, however, stunningly awesome, and now I can finally see what all the hype is about. Despite being visually less than impressive, its gameplay is just remarkable: it is incredibly fast paced, requires lots of dexterity and therefore lots of key-tapping, and even some special knowledge (rocket/grenade jumping anyone?). In fact, I would say that it is one of the most satisfying FPS games that I have played since... Half-Life 2. Whatever!

reminds me how fps games used to have secret areas accesable by rocket/grenadejumping rather than going to a certain wall and pressing USE button.

also... fps games of old days used to battle with their good points, not their bad ones.
old fps: different map designs, weapons, different pacing and physics (that actually matter in a gameplay).
these days: one game has killstreaks so ill just choose the other one even tho it has gazilion flaws.
