Unofficial TJA Website Project (cancelled) | |

Hi all!
With TJA coming up to it's 12th birthday I'm working on something big for TJA: A new, more modern, website. With the new films on the horizon, bringing with them a potential resurgence of Star Wars games, now seems like a great time to work on bringing new features and consolidating the various spin off sites into one fancy new package. I know if I wanted to look for a community to game with, be it SW or otherwise, it would still be here. It's early days yet, but I will keep this thread updated with my progress as I go and fell free to leave some suggestions for the site here or at the project site. http://thejediacademy.tk/ This post was edited by MrDJSilva on Nov 10 2014 10:06am. |

It's probably for the best that the website stay in its current state. IF a new Jedi Academy is produced we can always invest the energy and time into revamping the site then instead of now. _______________ Joined: September, 2005 | Steam: traderjoeeee "Politeness, Honor, Determination, Dignity, and Humility. However, I'm with Masta on this. I'm not sure if using generic forum software is the answer for a new JA site. E.g. is there a way to import the existing JA user profiles, or do we all have to sign up again? And what will become of all the threads/comments/classes/articles/news, in short, the JA's history? Will it all be wiped out? If you're going to build a new website, then I suggest the following points to consider: - What functionality does the new JA website need to have? - Are we going to use the latest front-end technologies, like HTML5, Less, JQuery, etc? - What framework are we going to use to build the new website with? Code Igniter, Symfony2, .NET MVC4 (unlikely) or perhaps a flexible/powerful CMS? - Is the new JA website going to connect to the current database (which is probably a MySQL db, so that shouldn't be a problem)? - What server are we going to run the JA website on and what capactity does it need to have? Is a dedicated server needed? What about security and who's responsible for creating back-ups and updating the server software? (Note: I noticed the new forum's PHP version might need an update.) And there's probably plenty more points to consider as well, but I'm tired so I can't remember everything here and now. I don't mean to come across as negative, by the way. I just mean to point out that creating a new JA website is quite a project and that, before you start working on it, a lot of things need consideration. Just to help you along. As a Web Developer myself, this. Resorting to out of the box forum software does provide some nice features but removes a lot of the individuality of the site we have currently. I also agree that the existing database would have to be used; that or some sort of data migration would have to be laid out with an approved relational database design. A new database design that would work hand in hand and provide new possibilities is a job in its self long before a drop of PHP code is touched. A couple of years ago (possibly more) a similar regeneration project was started by myself and some others but it ran out of steam and ultimately crashed with no one picking it up, this was primarily because the team involved at the time was inexperienced and didn't communicate. And by team I do imply it isn't really a one man job. I'd be more than happy to help chip in myself and would highly recommend that any one involved should be comfortable in the latest advances in web technologies (both server side and client side technologies that Dash listed above). I'm not trying to be negative about the idea (more realistic), it's a fantastic idea and the timing would be perfect to try and revitalise the community which still has a strong (albeit dimmer) flame. Personally I'd recommend using Laravel as a platform as it provides dependency management with the Composer library which would cut out a lot of the work. Should you decide you wish to continue further, hit me up and drop me an email (I don't check my profile as often as I used to). Edit: July next year? 9 months? Woah. - Everon. Well i'm just gonna to say this again its unofficial its just a project to keep me busy xD and it wont be finished till July next year and also if the JA userbase, threads comments ect cant be imported ill just sell off the site for a billion dollars and trust me i've already had some concerns about it going from a site like this and importing it to the cms that i picked called vBulletin. the deadline is 9 months from now so im just gonna get the basic site up and going and all the features running as i've never used this cms before so im learning with it |

But... this isn't a new website, it's just a forum. And it's one of those generic ones that every clan likes to use. Why not actually design a website and then just eventually integrate this forum that we use here into it? _______________ Find out more about the Jedi Academy Aurochs here and more about Masta here!
