There are a few people around here that wanna try out mapping or wateva, but can't always get through the tutorials. People that already map mite get stuck with something too. You could get forwarded to Dom, but he's never got the time to reply to that kinda mail for sum reason...
So, here looks like a nice place to set up for a community mapping discussion Better go grab those tent poles... _______________ ««¤¤¤{{PREÅÐÅT¤R ka¦¦ata'n}}¤¤¤»» Founder of RSPCT (The Royal Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Toasters) |

I just ran across a very interesting problem- I have a room with a func_rotating staircase (its interesting to watch people try to climb it) in a room that is seperated from the rest of the map with a door and a hint brush.
Now heres the interesting part- when the door is open, the func_rotating is seen as usual. When the door closes behind the person, the func_rotating DISSAPEARS. As i said, climbing a rotating staircase was hard enough, but now its impossible. So, does anyone have an idea as to how i might fix this problem? Should I remove the hint brush? I really don't want to do that, because without it the map gets really laggy. _______________ The only thing better than playing JA is making JA levels! I've never tried it, but you SHOULD be able to make a JK2 map with tempest. After making the map, you would UV map it, with the textures that come with the game. Then you should be able to export the file as a .map file. I don't know how you would do entities... Then, you would have to run the compiler.
A question- what graphics card do you have? I have had first hand experiance with radiant not working because of a bad card, or old drivers. _______________ The only thing better than playing JA is making JA levels! see, i have a big wall. now i want to cut a CIRCLE outta that wall! like when you do a 32-sided brush, ut kinda "invert it" (everything that is selected gets deselected and the other way around). oh, and how to important custom md3's? i have a .md3 file and a skin, but how to get it in radiant? (simply copy and paste in a folder and then selceting it with misc_models doesnt seem to work) _______________ Aeth S'kray *June 2002 +September 2003 |

thx Corr, but i was thinking about custom entities, like enteties in a hydroball map. Ball spawn point and so on. I figured out meself out. Aeth, To fit a round dome into a "4-corner brush" you first make a dome out of bevels or use a cone. Then, with bevels you cap each one with an inverted bevel cap, then delete the cap that won't be showing. With a cone you just cap it, and delete the top cap. the cap will make the curve fit into 4 corners.
Demon, the glass texture is in the "common" set. I think glass 2 works the best, but I'm not sure. when you apply the texture to a brush face, make sure you fit the texture (press s to bring up the surface window, press fit, then press ok). This will cause the glass to look transparent instead of marked. I don't know what you mean by "custum entity". If you mean a completely create a new type of entity, I have no idea how. If you mean create a new entity in your map, first select the brush you are creating the entity with, right click on the 2D view, and select the entity from the entity list. Glass is in the func group. After selecting the entity type the brush you selected will now be an entity. Keep in mind that you only have to make glass an entity if you want the glass to be breakable. You can have glass with just the texture, but make sure you make the brush detail. _______________ The only thing better than playing JA is making JA levels! I'm guessing here, since I haven't done it. I believe what you do is make a "dome" shaped window. Then there is a texture with the window bars on it that you apply to the surface. I beleive that will do the trick. _______________ Death is only the beginning. |

Also, if the junk text gives you a number for the brush that has the error, right down the number. Then, go to misc (on the toolbar menu thing), find brush. enter in the number, click find, and the brush should be selected. Then you can do whatever you want with it.

This is a pain, but it's the quickest way I've found to pin down a "problem child" brush in a map. First, you must know how to set the Region in your map. If you don't, read up on it and come back.
Next, select half of your map and set that to the active Region. Compile using fastvis, nolight. Did you get the error? If yes, cut the region in half and compile again. If no, deselect everything in the map, then click the "i" key. This inverts the selection in the region in which you're working, meaning everything selected becomes unselected while everything unselected (everything in this case) becomes selected. Now click Region->Off. The entire map becomes visible again, and the Region you were looking at is selected. Click "i" again to invert the selection, then select Region->Set Selected Brushes. Now your Region is set to the half of the map that you didn't compile before. Since you didn't get the error in the first half of the map you compiled, it must be here. Narrow down the Region to half of this and compile. Every time you compile a region and get the error, you're closing in on a problem brush. Keep cutting regions in half and compiling one half to see if that's where the problem is. Programmers call this a binary search. Obviously you should be most suspicious of the parts you've edited most recently. I know this is a pain, but I've found it useful. Sometimes I find it faster not to bother finding the exact problem brush; instead I just narrow it down to a small enough "problem region" that I can just delete that region and remake it from scratch in less time than it would take to track down and debug the exact brush causing the problem. After just eight iterations of this process you'll have cornered the problem brush in a region just 1/255th the total size of your map. Hope this helps. Ah ok, thanks Corran.
Now onto my latest problem. The compile process is reporting to me that 4 of my brushes have duplicate planes. I can't figure out how, and have no idea how to find them. Any idea how to find them without deleting an entire section of the map and starting over? _______________ Death is only the beginning. |

heh, Kalheka, I didnt see your post till just now. I guess I should be more observatnt
I'm sorry about the -1 not working. That changes some thoughts about some of my maps as well. Now, if you want, heres some knowledge on the engine workings, in response to your question (which was probably retorical, but I feel like answering it anyway) You asked why they changed multiplayer so much from single player. In actuality, the multiplayer engine was not changed much from the previous engine used in a past game. It was the single player engine that was heavily modified, and many things were added to it. So, you could actually be glad that they added toggle doors to single player, instead of dissapointed that they didnt add it to multiplayer. (believe me though, i'm dissapointed that they didnt add it in MP too) Vaughn, all I can say until I think of something else is- keep trying different things. You're beginning to leave my area of knowledge...
I would think that quake III would have a similar set up to JK II's. but if you say it doesn't work, then you might have to try something else. I've thought about doing this, but I never got around to it. try copying all of the textures, and put them in their respective folders in the 'texture' folder in base. Then, when textureing in gmax, use the texures from those folders. I THINK that will cause the game to reconize the textures when you use the map. But I don't know for sure. edit: I just thought of something Have you tried switching to GTK radiant? _______________ The only thing better than playing JA is making JA levels! im looking for the temptest plugin, but as blind as i am, i cant find it any idea's (i looked @ gmaxes site, not there, im looking through google.ca, and i havent found it. But i have found the temptest mod for gmax, not plugin... does that matter?)
Edit: I found it, now, my problem is, the tutorial i have is for quake III, and it doesnt seem to work for JK2 (shaders, etc), do you know where i can find this stuff? and i apologize for taking over this thread, very sorry all _______________ When you become an actor, you become the person, and you dont act anymore. actually, supposedly you CAN map in gmax. No go on the door setting. Setting to -1 acts just like setting the wait to 0, it returns immediately. Damn that messes up my plans for the map dramatically. Why did they change the doors like that in mp?
Vaughn, try reinstalling jk2 rad yet again, and before you try to run it, clean out the windows/temp folder. Just sometimes a junk file in their can interfere with the running of normal programs.
