I'm having trouble getting a decent ping time to the JA server. When I do a Tracert, it appears that I am being connected to the server via Cogentco. They are lagging me up big time!! I'm getting 500-800 ping times from them. Amyone else going through Cogentco to get to the JA server and having the same trouble? I wish i could bypass Cogentco's backbone, but I don't think that's possible. I wonder if they are experiencing an Denial of Service attack or is it always this bad?

Open a DOS box and type:

tracert www.jediknightii.net

Not sure if it works in 98 or ME.

You can also download a nifty little program called Ping Plotter...

Problem with playing on another server is that everyone is on the main one all the time :( I ping nicely to those to! Its Jediknightii.net... they must be Cogent customers and since im hooked up through AOL Time Warner, you are right I'm SOL. This problem is well known and there was an article about it in the Washington Post:

Im suprised you even got that email, seeing as how you're not a CognetCo customer. :) It sucks for the gamer, but at the center of the internet is a bunch of routers with routing protocols throwing new routes back and forth to try to keep network traffic flowing well. Sometimes a company (or ISP) cant afford multiple backbone connections, or multiple links go down, or a squirrel chews through a fiberoptic cable or whatever. It's cool that cognetco says theyre working on it w/ their peer, but theres not much you'll be able to do. Until they fix their stuff youre SOL. Go play on another server. :)

Well I emailed Cogent Communications and this is what they say (although I'm not an AOL user, I think I'm being routed through the AOL network):

Dear Cogent Customer,

This email is to provide a status on the peering situation between Cogent Communications and AOL.

As you know, Cogent Communications has been diligently working to improve traffic exchange with AOL. On January 1, 2003 we activated (at considerable expense) alternate connections to AOL through other carriers. The alternate connections provide significant improvement with traffic flow to AOL.

We want to keep you informed on our progress. We continue to work to completely resolve this issue and will provide further updates as they become available.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced during this difficult period. We appreciate your patience and are happy to have you as a valued customer. Please continue to contact us with any concerns you may have, as your service is our first priority.

If you require additional information, please contact Customer Support at 877-7COGENT.

Sincerely,

Customer Support
