For all of u out there into punk or not, i would like to ask if the change from the old days of rebelious meaningful songs by bad religion, ramones, nofx and rancid are being tainted by the gay fags of good charlotte, sum 41, simple plan and many others who are plainly hypocritical punks. Thats my oppinion now tell me yours, Coz i wanna see if im the only one that feels this way. _______________ For every pause i was nearly garenteed time to speak. Plo: 1/2 the fun of "punk rock" is defining what it is, and the other 1/2 is ridiculing and/or assaulting the "posers". Assaulting hippies is in there somewhere too. Oh and drinking. And making clothes. And being a ruffian. ![]() Are the bands mentioned above punk? Who cares? Now i don't know anything about Punk or its ethos or any of that, but it seems to me from what has been said that there are a number of bands branching off from the original idea of the music that was labelled punk - this is not necessarily a bad thing. Diversity in music is something that should be aimed for, otherwise we will only get the same c***p churned out week in week out, personally i don't like a lot of the chart music, however it is good that we have this area of the music as much as it is that we have other bands that are not as high profile. When it comes down to it; people should feel happy to listen to the music they like to hear without the necessity of applying abstract labels to themselves. If the new "style of punk" has moved so far from what you consider punk label it as pop and them as pop bands - in reality what difference does it make? What i have probably written here is probably very offensive to people who follow the punk ethos (i don't know if it is), and if this is the case then i apologise for offending any sensibilities; it just seems to me that when it comes down to it people should be able to say that they like a particular song without feeling embarrased about liking it, and without fear of being isolated because of it. these days bands like gc, sum 41 take the image of punk and all its rites of individuality and rebelion and change it into hypocritical lines of words in a song. Bands like bad religion, anti flag, youth brigade and many others actually have substance and meaning. While others like nofx and uttermouth are just funny fuckers. _______________ For every pause i was nearly garenteed time to speak. It's always the selfish who say that life is way too short. well, i like sum 41, GC (older albums), and sum simple plan (which is more like pop, but still) and then i like the old skool punk and stuff. and rock. its all good. the one thing that makes the new "punk" look bad is all the screaming teenage girls that dont have pop to listen to anymore and shift over to punk. seriously, they dont care about the music, they jus love the guys (like joel from GC). to sum it up, i dont hate the new music, jus the crowd it attracts. _______________ Personal body guard to teh 1337 Jacen Aratan! Disclaimer: I really don’t like sum41 or most bands/music that come out of Canada for that matter (no offence Canadian Brothers, It’s just your country can’t produce good music.) I really dislike what rock has become with the endless wave of Mud Stained Corn Biscuit bands that are being popped out of the record companies like a Vietnamese breeding dog shoots out puppies. But that is what is referred to as rock. It’s not what rock was originally. The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Van Halen; those are real rock bands… but they are not what rock was originally either. If you take it back to its origin, rock was Elvis, Buddy Holly and the likes. Look how much rock has changed yet it’s still called rock. The same goes for “Alternative”. It was labeled as such because that style of music fit the true meaning of the word when it first emerged. The genre became Pop but was still called Alternative. Not because it was alternative by Webster’s definition, but because people could associate the word “alternative” with a certain sound (no matter how commercial or mainstream it became.) The same thing has happened to punk. What the media calls “punk” is so different from what it was. But the media has the power to dictate what a culture calles things through the brainwashing of its youth (MTV.) This is a rambling post I know so let me sum(41) it up. A lot of people are so quick to say that their favorite genre of music can never change but are perfectly fine accepting a genre that has already undergone its metamorphosis before they got into it. _______________ One of the Belouve boys This comment was edited by ioshee on May 07 2003 06:39pm. |

The problem with punk, as a political statement rather than music, is that sooner or later you'll end up being hypocrictial. The music company throws money at you, you start flying in learjets, wiping yer ass with 100 dollar bills, all of which is at odds with punk sentiments. Happened to the Pistols, I hear. Hmmm ... this has nothing to do with the subject of the thread, does it? Ignore me and continue. _______________ "Negative. I am a meat popsicle." |

3 chords is punk, everything else is jazz![]() I would not class a lot of the new punk bands as punk, not shure what i would class them, mostly rubbish. I co run a music promotions company, in the small time we have been running ive seen a few good local punk band's, this is a ray of light for punk fans, hopefully if we do our job right you will soon hear of bands like Givemanakick.
