When i was a newbie at the academy it took me a while to learn duel basics.JATs and other players dont always have time to teach the basics again and again. And if people post dueling tips here it will be easier for players to get started.:D

just a note to that don't-swing-unless-you-will-hit-thingy: I swing in midair many times, but only when doing red 3 strike combos. After 2 attacks, many will think the combo over, and BOOM:eek:, they're dead!:D wouldn't recommend doing it any other way...

oh, and ioshee; don't say "I'm just an initiate". skill and rank doesn't automatically go hand in hand. just look at dj;)

I know I'm just an initiate but... It's nice to bow before a duel (crouch with your saber put away and maybe tilt your head down a little.) Also what Aeth said is so true. Don't attack unless you will hit. Now actually doing this takes time to master so don't be discouraged. But I was told to stay calm, and that is the best single piece of advice I've received.

Keep your eyes on your opponents movements. Avoid attacking in patterns, because most likely they are watching you as well. :)

Other than that, just learn to time your attacks and try experimenting with combos. DO NOT, however, overuse combos... They do have their weaknesses.

Use every type of swing available to you, mix it up, as it were. Not just changing stances, but alot of people favour either left or right swings allmost exclusivly. Use some of each, and don't allways run with the trigger direction of the swing. Id est; You're launching a red horizontal to the left, most people will continue to run left. Rather than this, start the left swing, and then run straight forward, or circle to the right.
Movement. Everyone has heard "keep moving" But how? Move at anything other than a 90 degree angle to your opponent, instead, move forward and left, or forward and right, it's much harder to lead both a changing distance and angle at the same time. Rolling is excellent, but learn to control them as well, so you rise exactly where you need to. Jumping; Remember, if you need to, you can jump while in the middle of a swing, if you have to get away in the middle of a combo, jump anywhere but straight back. Backflip recovery time is horrid.
Also remember that if you're not swinging, you can parry saber blows. It's more risky than dodging, but a good block can set you up for a nice lunge or overhead strike without much fear of retribution.

Roleing is far better than jumping if you can do it, its faster and apart from the slight recovery time you are less likely to be hit, if you do jump, look down to were you are landing becoz you will be shure your oppoment will be ready if you land infront of him.:D

only use an attack when you really need it. i see guys jumping, running like mad performing combos, lunges, DFAs... that's useless. one good hit is better than 10 moves that hit the air ;)
be one with the saber. that sounds stupid but it helps. really go into the guy you want to attack (at the right time), boost your saber with small turns to get right through the enemy's body. always make sure what swing you do (horizontal/vertical/diagonal etc) to combine it with your aiming.

try to use all the 3 stances. Don't run to ur opponent attack. If u see he/she start attacking go straigt with a swing on him and than jump back. if ur low at hp try to use yellow and blue.
Roll and jump to get away from the hits...

this goes for red stance users: learn to time your attacks. be patient and calm, you need to control the pace of the duel, since you can't attack as fast as they can. (they=people that use yellow or blue) only dfa when you are sure to hit, and you can't be countered. IE: when your opponent has done a dfa or when he jumps and you do a dfa where he lands (kinda hard). Don't spin a lot. Having your back to your opponent is bad:P

well first of all, try to learn the basics of how the stance system works: blue, yellow, red (not gonna go into details right now) and the basic swings.
then learn the combo system. and only then, learn specials. then learn countering (you could learn this earlier). now practice practice practice and practice. use everything you have learned and duel a lot of different people. vary your stances and your moves. don't be predictable!

hmm that's all for now.. i might come back here to post some more. gotta go though. ;)

ohh and also, patience!! :P
