What is a good StarWars Book to start with?

I have never read any of the Star Wars novels. Mostly because there are an overwhelming amount of them and I don't want to stand in the bookstore too long looking at them. Especially when there is this cute girl checking out the romance novels and we keep exchanging glances. Anyway I was wondering if some one could tell me a good book or series to start with. Or maybe just share your favorite authors and why. Thanks.

Star by Star is a very good book. Another good set is the Enemy Lines duology by Aarron Allston. It kind of gives you a really good look why Wedge has always been able to get out alive in the toughest battles of the Rebellion. Also he reveals just enough about what the characters are planning to do that you know its going to be good but you don't know what's about to happen untill it does. He's also got such a great style of humor that's very reminiscent of the original trilogy. The novels he wrote for the X-wing series are some of my favorite. I highly recommend the Starfighters of Adumar. The novel isn't first person but its written completely from Wedge's point of vies.

Of all the books out now, I, Jedi is the only one to go in depth in Jedi training and what it could be like. Very good read.

Approaching Storm is nothing special. Some interesting tidbits in their but not meny. If you want some great books to start with I reccommend the following: Courthship of Princess Leia (Dave Wolverton), I, Jedi (Micheal A Stackpole - FANTASTIC) and all the Rogue/Wraith squadron books (Micheal A Stackpole and Aaron Allston - also BRILLIANT!)

The bookstores around here don't carry many Star Wars books.

I'm reading The Approaching Storm by Alan Dean Foster. It's my first Star Wars novel and so far it's good, but not great. :)

"Heir to the Empire" It was the first book I read and it tells of how the New Republic is trying to get things going and how Grand Admirl Thrawn is one of their bigest threats. Plus it would explain alot about the other novles written after it. (characters and all)

I agree that you should start with Heir to the Empire. All timothy Zahn books are worth reading. I have read about 24 star wars books since summer. The best ones were
I, Jedi, Shadows of the Empire, and the thrawn trilogy. THis doesn't include Heir to the Empire because I read it 3 years ago.

Start at the beginning with Tim Zahn's "Heir to the Empire". It's not the beginning timeline wise, but publishing wise. Go from publishing date. It makes the most sense to me. If you REALLY want I can make a list for you. Yeah I have every star wars book (minus the prequel and comic books).. me = dork.

I started like many with heir of the Empire. Timothy Zahn is a very good author indeed. If you like Luke very much you should read: Planet of Twilight, darksaber and The New Rebellion. I never read the X-wing novels. Here in holland there is a limited supply of star-wars book. One book is especicially cool if you think the Force is really cool: Traitor from the newest serie.:D

I started with Heir to the Empire, then I went to the X-Wing Series. I only read the Wraith Squadron books. I still stand by the thought that they are the best of the X-Wing series. So I skipped all else.

The person to ask about books is Hector Thrawn. He has read every piece of Star Wars literature (they don't have any TV at his house). He's the guy that tells me what to read in what order, so since he started me on Heir to the Empire, then the X-Wing, and so on, that'd be good.

I guess I never told him I didn't read I, Jedi. Like he told me to. But I hear it's good.

But yeah, go Heir to the Empire. Can't go wrong there. I think this was what started the whole Star Wars book things anyways. Yes, yes it was. I did a report on the author.

of course if you do start with I, Jedi, you might want to go back and read the X-wing novels and get background on Corran Horn, Then you'd have to read the Jedi Academy Trilogy to know what all else was going on at those times. Basically if you start with any book you're going to a get a snowball effect on more information. A big part of EU novels is after Return of the Jedi, you could always start with The Truce at Bakura and just work your way up chronologically. It would take a lot of reading to get up to the current releases though.
