Well, remember, you have a few options.

First off...ask someone! There are a lot of people here who can help you out. I spent a few hours last night discussing and demonstrating saber tactics to people.

Second...get ProMod. I'm going to quote from the readme:

==================================================
The lackluster saber combat of 1.04 has been replaced with an extremely deep and rewarding system based on your ability to aim at your saber opponent. The better you aim at them during combat, the stronger your offensive and defensive saber capabilities will be. Your current offensive and defensive strength relative to your closest saber-wielding opponent is illustrated using the new Combat Strength Crosshair (CSC). This is a multicolored circle that appears just outside the regular aiming crosshair. When it appears small and red, then your offensive and defensive capabilities are strong, when it is large and yellowish, your CSC score is weak. Keep your opponent in your crosshair at all times! Your ability to do so will greatly affect the outcome of your duels! Another thing to note is that due to the CSC, use of scripting in jk2 will benefit you much less than before. No script will help you aim.
==================================================

Now, how will a game-changing mod help you in base JK2?

Simple...it teaches you better sabering habits. You are forced to aim correctly to score hard hits on your opponent. No more random swinging and hoping that you hit something.

I've been practicing with ProMod against bots, and my ability in red stance has improved drastically. Knowing the saber swings and combos is only part of it, you have to develop the timing and knowledge of when to use them too.

Having the CSC circle around the crosshair helps "train" your ability to aim at your opponent, and keep aiming correctly.

I highly recommend ProMod to anyone who wants to practice on their own time, away from the Academy ;)

I don't see how.

If you go saber only...to practice saber, as I mentioned...

Then everyone is on equal footing ;)

I don't understand. Sometimes while dueling I run to the side of someone and swing a heavy stance blow. My intention is to hit them with a backhanded swing, as they are about 90 degrees to me. It sounds like promod would penalize this type of behavior. Is this bad dueling etiquette or poor saber technique? Tell me now before I develop bad habits.

Promod can be found at http://www.oculis.org/promod/

Soon it's supposed to be hosted at jediknightii.net though.

As for moves that require facing away, I think it makes exceptions for those, and the directions are reversed or changed.

The side kick, for example, does the most damage when your opponent is exactly 90 degrees to either side.

It's a really great mod DJ, you should definitely try it out ;)

Hmm interesting. I may have to give it a try. I've heard nothing but good things about ProMod.
