Do ppl have masters because it is like roleplaying or is it necessary to become a great Jedi.

Please describe your relationship with your master or padawan if you have the time and energy.

[edit] I don't have a master. Does it make me a lesser Jedi?

PADAWAN TRAINING (Jedi Lore)

Once a Jedi Master takes on an apprentice (Padawan), the Master becomes solely responsible for the student's welfare and education. A Jedi Master can never take this decision lightly. He is effectively adopting a child (regardless of apprentice's age) and must train the apprentice not only in the mysteries of the Force, but in day-to-day life as an adult and a Force-user. For this reason, a Jedi without a clear sense of self-identity makes for a poor Master.

Many factors influence the selection of an apprentice. First, the Master must be aware of the student's personality. Since the Master intends to spend the next several years of their life (hopefully not true in Real life of the Academy, but to continue with the lore...) with the Padawan, radically different personality types could interfere with the training process. A Master should not choose an apprentice who offers no challenge at all. The Master learns from the experience of teaching an apprentice.

HONOR YOUR MASTER (Jedi Lore)

By the same token as below, a Padawan should endeavor to show respect to thier Master at all times, especially in the presence of others. A Padawan should not disagree with his Master to the point of argument. In discussion with others, a Padawan should address only his master unless they are otherwise addressed. In all other ways, the Padawan should defer to the Master and not invite censure. This spares the Master the burden of apologizing to others for the Padawan's behavior.

HONOR YOUR PADAWAN (Jedi Lore)

Every Master has an awesome responsibility to their Padawan learner to bring them to the end of their training. A Jedi Master must always remember that a Padawan is an individual who deserves respect. A Master should not reprimand their Padawan in public, nor punish their Padawan for disagreeing with them. On the other hand, the Master should praise their apprentice when they do well, especially in the presence of others. Doing this builds the Padawan's confidence and strengthens the bond between Master and apprentice.

I am a master, and from what I hear, I'm a good one too.

Really, it is like a deep friendship. I teach a lot about Jedi philosophy, honor, etc. I can also teach specialized stuff, like how I am decent at movement. It really is just a personal thing, where you really take someone on to sort of shape them to be a great Jedi like yourself.

I was just asked by my Padawan if I could teach him the philosophies and everything else that makes me who I am. It's because he wanted to learn something that really only I could teach him, that I felt it appropriate to take him as a Padawan.

Do you need one to make it to Knight? No. But you can use it to learn specialized stuff, to really get better in certain areas, or to become more like a certain person. I look at it and say that asking for a Master is saying "I want to be like you (as a Jedi or whatnot)."

If you just seek skills, most anyone can teach you. By signing on to be a Padawan, you are really taking on their outlook as a Jedi as well, not just learning how to do the skills.

Hope that helps. I'm going to place some Jedi lore here shortly, on Master/Padawan.

I've not been a Padawan to anyone, though there are members here that I would train under, it really hasn't been a great deal to me. And just recently I've gotten my first recommendation for Knighthood. It's not something that's really required. If anything, I see becoming a Padawan as a chance to learn somone elses style very in depth, and staying a student as a chance to study under everyone with less detail. It does make a difference in your style, but not allways in skill.

It isn't required to advance in the ranks. I don't have a Master, I don't plan to ask someone to be their Padawan either.
