This is the set of ideas I was trying to expound upon tonight.

http://www.sirlin.net/Features/feature_PlayToWinPart1.htm

This is why I choose not to complain when someone beats me. If I lose, it's only because I didn't play well enough to win, no matter what the circumstances may be...ping included.

Bubu, that attitude is okay here...for the most part.

When you are fighting someone though, all bets are off unless you BOTH agree to a specific set of rules beforehand.

Remember, the purpose of this Academy was to help you learn how to play JKII better...not just for fun, but also for the times when you play on a public server, so you won't get totally creamed by people who play to win by any means necessary.

People shouldn't be afraid to face "no holds barred" situations, because it only helps you to improve.

Also, as far as the "Jedi Honor" theories...some of us don't roleplay heroic jedi or evil sith when we play this game. We just play. That's just the way it is.

I feel I have to make a note regarding this article.
I play competitively, I'm a member of a Team Fortress clan (It's a Half-Life mod, and it rox.) Been with them for more than a year. We play in the STA Stronger Than All, league. Silver division. In fact, recently had a title shot. We lost that match, but that isn't the point exactly.

There are things in TFC, even in the most competitive leagues, that are considered cheap, though are still legal. Most clans just won't use them, flat out. We don't need to make the game think an explosion just went off on an entire floor, killing the defense, destroying the sentry guns, and opening the flag to capture. We win by using skill beyond a simple exploit, and lose because our opponents are better players, strategists, and communicators.
Some things, truly are cheap, as Akuma was described in the article. But what do you expect from a man who's name translates to Demon, and fights like Ryu with quad damage...

Deathmatch? Yeah, hit your opponent from behind, use a rocket to make sure he doesn't get to turn around and fire back while you're at it.
Team based anything? Gang up on stragglers, lone gunmen, and advance recon style players. Heck, use this in Deathmatch, then fight your ex teammate for the full rights to the kill. ;>
Dueling to improve your skills in lightsaber combat? Well, this is a more friendly competition, and with a great possibility for varying skill levels to clash. So, you've got one regular opponent, first he wants no strikes when down of any kind. Groovy, I'm sure I can refrain from KDFA and slashing when I win a lock. I still might kick him down though. When he's ready to deal with kicks, maybe he'll allow KDFA's in our next match. When he starts winning locks, maybe he'll want to okay all downstrikes. None of this means I'll use it 100% of the time either.
I'll make a very specific note out of this, I seem to find alot of people wanting FF duels, without drain or heal. So basically, you want to see who can deal out the most damage with both the saber and dark force power, while the lightsiders only get sabers and no way to recover that extra damage? It seems all to often that these same players would bark if they were downstruck, too.

Point is this, don't expect anyone to play by your rules, this article mentioned that. But if you want specific rules for whatever reason, ask for them, and agree on them beforehand. Don't just order "No hitting when down." after it's happend the first time, or at all during a duel. Agree on them entirely with your opponent before you even bow, saves us the frustration of being called cheap.

yeah if this were street fighter, there would be no honor. but it's not, it's Jedi Knight II. In the name of the game, it says "knight", as opposed to "street" in street fighter.

well.. what does that tell ya?

the "good" players the author of this article is referring to are the players who don't care about the people who they play with. they only care about one thing: winning!

how often have i come on a server, left like half an hour or more later, without dueling even once! it's because i come online not only to fight and win but also to be around the people i play with, to talk with them and have fun, TOGETHER!

that's why i respect and honor my opponents when in a duel. because they are also my friends.
