An idea for the Academy I want your thoughts on...

You all know our server situation. Mine will be gone soon, and I'd like to get a dedicated CTF server to hold CTF class on. The problem is these servers and their bandwidth all cost money. I've sent a request to the jkii.net staff to post news asking for help with this.

If nothing comes through I'd like your ideas on this: opening a JA store. Theres a company called Cafepress (http://www.cafepress.com) that can put a JPEG logo on anything from T-shirts to mousepads to lunchboxes to boxers to steins to even thongs and sell it online for you. There's no cost to open one of these stores, and they handle all the shipping.

100% of the proceeds from this would go toward the cost of maintaining servers. If we get servers donated to us then we would use the money toward buying tournament prizes (yeah real honest to goodness prizes :)).

Here's my reservations:
1) Would people avctually buy this stuff? Alot of you guys are kids w/o the means.

2) Would it be enough to pay for servers? I have a friend here in Dallas who works for a colocation company. They give big big discounts for hosting for non profit orgs like us iun exchange for their logo on our site somewhere (preferably next to gamecity's)

What are your thoughts on the idea? Theres no risk in opening the store since theres no capital required to do it. It can only serve to make some money, I just want to know if it's all worth it or not to go through with all this.

I think it is a very good idea to open this store. I know a lot of people would buy things, I most certainly would. If only 1000 members of the academy all buy one item of 8,- euro's, that would be 8000 euro's/dollars. That would be quite enough to afford a server for at least a couple of years.
I don't think any people would object to additional banners on the site, they could be placed beneath the window, so that you'd have to scroll down to see them.
There is a Dutch organisation named kliks that pays a certain amount of money for each click on a banner placed on your site. The McPclan has just finished the experimental period and the money is in. If 4 people click on 6 banners each day, that would lead to like 200 euro's in 3 months, if all visitors of the academy would.....
Possibly there is an American organisation that does the same.

I didn't understand your last post Johnny, can you try simplifying the context.

And Canadian Jedi, don't worry. I'm sure DJ did not mean you. Just remeber, if you are ever offended by something someone says then they probalby were not refering to you in the first place:confused:

And since when have Canadians ever been concerned with style? J/K

I think it sounds like a pretty sweet idea! I'd definately buy some JA shirts, just as long as they were stylish of course ;).

Oh yeah and about the "kids w/o the means", what do you mean by that? I am usually described as a "kid" and I have plenty of "means" to buy stuff on the internet. Just as long as I pay my parents, they really don't care much.

I agree with Arcuss. A buck a month would not be to great a fee for me. But a car wash with girls would be nice. :D

YEEEEHAAAA! Right on Arcuss. I’m ready.

CoRRUPTioN made me think of something though. What if some jerky turkey tries to through their weight around on the basis of a donation? That is why I propose you make a link to donate on the webpage. It could have a little disclaimer that says something like: “By donating I agree not to be a prick and through it in the Academy’s face when I don’t get my way.” Well something a little more legal sounding but hopefully you get the idea. Then it could link to a paypal account.

DJ, do you have a paypal account yet? That would be so sweet and easy.

Alternately I would love to see a fundraising car wash where girls wore JA thongs while they washed cars.

I guess Luke, ioshee, and I are only fools who would give up a few vanilla cokes a year to help out. :(

fyi: for those who don't know a donation by it's very nature is a voluntary thing.

--------------------------------------------------
side note: this doesn't apply if you live in my town, and request marriage services from the mayor, at which point it becomes a mandatory donation, I argued with his secretary until she was red in the face over this one.

Secretary: on the day of the service the mayor would like a 50$ donation in the form of cash, a check, or money order.

Arcuss(<--cheap): Cool, a donation so I don't have to pay it if I don't want?

Sec: Well yes sir if you want his services you'll have to pay it.

Arcuss: Oh, so it's a fee, I thought you said a donation.

Sec:No sir it's not a fee, it is a DONATION

Arcuss: A mandatory donation? Sounds like a fee to me.:P

Sec: Sir do you want the Mayor's services or NOT?

sorry I got off topic there but I had to share that with you. thinking of it always makes me laugh.
--------------------------------------------------

Dj isn't asking any one for anything, and no where in this thread did anyone say you had to pay a membership fee. I suggested 1$ a month from those who could afford it, that way you wouldn't have to buy anything to pricey to help out. If you do the math on this you would see that 1$ from every student is a great amount of money collectively but a really small amount of money to give individually. Think of it as a lottery of sorts, with the money cleared after server fees the council could buy some really sweet stuff to offer up as prizes for tourneys. I would gladly hand over a buck a month for the chance to win some computer hardware for example.

The best part of the Academy (imo), and the thing I've always thought made it special, was the fact that the people here really seem to like helping each other out. Well lets help each other out. One new server would be great two would be better. I really think we could make this happen. Is there not any one else who feels the way I do about this? I'm the only one who can see the potential here?

:arcuss:

p.s. DJ, my apologies for spaming your thread.
Where do I send the check?:)

Come on now, every Generation X boy wanted to be Luke Skywalker. Is it because he was a whiney farm boy from some backwater hack planet? No, it's because he was a FREAKING JEDI. He could block lasers with his lightsaber. He could levitate droids & rocks & crap with his mind. Come on, he choked two pig dudes with just a simple gesture. He cut off Darth Vader's hand and kicked him down a flight of stairs. He got his @$$ zapped by lightning from the geezer Emperor, stood up and said "s'at all you got b!tc#??"

Dude, we're not gonna force money out of you or charge for membership or any of that happy horsecookies nonsense. We do need money to buy servers and tournament prizes. I'd up the bucks myself, but I'm flat broke. Donations are completely *voluntary*. I understand if you dont have credit cards or are too young to do any of this stuff. You don't HAVE to do any of this.

I just want a JA mug. :)

Well, i think it'd be a waste of time, very few peops are gonna buy JA merchandise. However, fund raising for a new server is a good idea, u've just got the wrong one for now. ;)

P.S. If u did royalty fees or law suits wouldn't be an issue, this is your organisation based on a game and a movie but created by u, i doubt they could find any good reason (but anything's possible with the American leagal system :P)

Edit: don't wanna sound uptight or anything, but if it comes to members paying, as wonderful as the JA is i'm out :( I seriously hope it doesn't come to that.

;)

My only question is the Legality.

You're selling merchandise that is based in part on the "Star Wars" universe. Are you not therefore subject to royalty fees of some kind?

This is why I love you DJ, you give and give without any thought of return.

Ok. I'm glad you posted this because I've been thinking about it ever since you brought it up on irc.

The store is a cool idea, and I'd be good for a rodentpad and a T for the kido. However, I think the novelty would wear off too quickly to sustain a monthly revenue. The base prices are high enough, and to make profit for server fees you'd have to tack a couple of extra bucks on top of that. The real winners here would be cafepress.

I know you don't like the idea of donations, but just hear me out on this.

We have a roster of 1500+, maybe half of which is active. So if members were to donated 1$ a month it would make for a very large server fund. Even if only half of the active members donated we still have more than enough for several servers. Why stop at a CTF server wouldn't it be cool to have a dueling only server as well? HELL YEAH!!!

Any money that is collected above the monthly server fees can be put into a slush fund for tourney prizes and the like. Just imagine the prizes you could afford if all active members donated just 1$. Can any one say AlienWare.:D

I honestly don't think 12$ a year is asking too much. I mean it is the least I can do in return for all the time and effort that others put into keeping this place running. For people like me that don't have any helpful skills to contribute, this is a great way for us to show appreciation, and help insure the longevity of this truly special community.

Is any one else feeling me on this? Am I the only crazy fool who would gladly lay down a measly 12$ a year to help the Academy out? For some reason I think the answer to my second question is no.

I only have one more question then I'll close.

Where do I send the check?

O.K. dj avoid lunch boxes thier only cool if your eight, the tea mugs(oh i love tea but thats another story)and t-shirt are a good idea BUT get a cool academy logo,it will sell much better if you can actully see yourself walking out in public with it on and even better if its cool to wear.
Remember the golden rule to marketing reward the consumer.:D
And as for sponser ship as long as we dont have to fill the page with a wall paper sised ad i dont mind.I read an article about associate programes,my non-techie friend found success with amazon associates. It works by you say the amazon things you want to sell in your litttle amazon shop and when someone buys summit through your link on your site they give u 8%,10% for books. Its totaly idiot proof i could make money from it
