Ok Here's a post with some usefull links. I will keep updating this as needed.

If you don't know about this site and you are a Windows User you need to know about this. This site will patch your os with any of the bugs in any Windows OS.
http://www.windowsupdate.com

A good piece of software to have. This will scan your computer for any kind of spyware that any freeware or shareware program that you download and install.
http://www.lavasoftusa.com or you can try spybot http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
*NOTE* Don't have both installed or they will say each other is spyware. I like spybot better.

A good free anti-virus program.. If you don't have a anti-virus I recommend you do.
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php

This site is good for information on ISP's(Internet Service Providers). It alos has a great little toolset for testing your internet connection and the forums are helpful for tweaking your pc to get the most out of your connection.
http://www.broadbandreports.com

Do you have windows XP or 2000 and a great video card? Seem to be stuck at about 60FPS, even though you say like com_maxfps 120? Simple fix http://www.ryanmh.com/files/reforce.zip is a fix for a Windows Bug that locks your frame rate at 60 fps when you can get higher. All you do is unzip that run it, click auto populate, hit Apply and reboot and boom FPS allover the place :)

I would love to have some help here, if possible

When I install NOD32, I always lose my internet connection.
I've digged through the settings, but can't find what's wrong with it.

I'm on a network Internet (my brother has internet too on his pc, but it's the same connection) I use Mozilla as my browser (haven't tried if IE still has internet.
What am I doing wrong here?

A bit of help please ...

thanks in advance :)

- Bailey -

PS: Does anyone know a program that shoes entries in your Registry that shouldn't be there? I used it before, but can't find it again? Anyone know the name by chance?
(it showed all entries that can be safely removed, aren't necessary (anymore), etc...)

[qoute]DONT CALL ME STUPID the power supply IS plugged in

if is want plugged in the computer wouldnt even turn on :P

when you replaced the power supply, what power rating as the old one, and what rating was the new one?

also what other peripherals draw power through the pc.

the most likely answer is that the PSU cant supply enough power to your system and you need to replace it with a moer powerful one.

Errr.... Graphics card problem...
When i start up my pc/restart it, a thing comes up saying my nvidia graphics card is not being supplied enough power. It also says that it has lowered its performance to prevent a crach or something... This is annoying me, although it can still play HL2 fine... It's been like this for ages. DONT CALL ME STUPID the power supply IS plugged in, I have opened the computer up several times to check. I suspect a faulty power supply (lol the last one blew up while playing KOTOR, the one before that didnt have enough leads to power my new hard drive). Any suggestions?

Oh yeah... System specs: 1.5GHz processor, nVidia Geforce FX 5600 Pro, 512mb RAM, etc... and a power supply. I think thats important.

Okay. I did as you said and removed all of them. I didn't see a CTFmon.exe there either. Only ones I left checked was the firewall and

Only problem is now my pc takes awhile to close on the restart and when it does, I get a popup letting me know that System configuration utility is currently running in diagnostic or selective mode. There is a button I can check not to view that message. After closing that box, without checking the option not to display the message again, the system configuration utility opens again on the first tab with selective startup being checked. Under that, all of the other options are selected. When I click okay, it asks me if I want to restart the pc again to let the options take effect. I click restart and it keeps doing the same thing in a loop. Should I check off that little box telling me not to display that message again? Will that stop the popup message, system config utility, and finalize what I have selected?

Sorry about all these questions. :(

well, the only thing hard to remove is CTFmon.exe which monitors the active windows and provides text input service support for speech recognition, handwriting recognition, keyboard, translation, and other alternative user input technologies. you need a bit of time and effort to remove, and it doesnt really do much harm. everything else can go. the only things that stay are your antivirus and firewall. hope that solves it :)

EDIT: no point calling support. costs a fortune, and they're trained in incompetence ;)

Yes, I am running XP Home edition. I also think you hit the nail right on the head with the msconfig. Only problem is, I'm not sure what is critical or not. Is there a way of knowing what is needed and what is crap? Maybe if I call the support center, they can tell me what should be there on a standard pc install and I can take it from there. Thank you very much for the quick response and I hope you know what I should keep and what I should remove. Thanks again. :D

when a pc runs, several files are executed:

autoexec.bat
this kind of loads devices and system preferences (if i remmber right, this was small things like numlock)

config.sys
this is used to load device drivers onto conventional memory

io.sys
the original purpose of IO.SYS was to
provide a io hardware compatibility layer for msdos. So IO.SYS messes
around with some of the bios interrupts, overidding them when necessary.
MSDOS.SYS uses the interrupts provided by IO.SYS for disk io as well as
the bios interrupts and provides msdos services to
applications.

win.ini
loads windows settings

(command.com, which you mentioned is the interpreter for dos which lets it understand your input)

there are lotsa things that you can do ;)

the easiest and most beginner friendly is msconfig. go to the start menu, the run command and type in 'msconfig' (no quotes) and click on the last tab, the startup. enchect all the boxes which arnt critically necessary. Are you still running Win98 or have you shifted to XP? if you email me the win.ini, autoexec.bat, config.sys, io.sys and win.ini ill be happy to look over them. its a lot easier and faster when you've done it before ;)

thats all i can think of for now, but theres prob quite a few other things that you can do, none come readily to mind tho. ill tell you if i think of something else ;)

btw, if you computer is running slow:

run a freshly updated antivirus, use the NOD32 demo if you are unsure about the reliability of yours
www/nod32.com

then an anti spyware, spybot S&D is the best around, and its free :)
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

spyware blaster prevents that nasty spyware from returning ;) also free
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

always run a firewall that goes double for anyone with an always on conenction like broadband. sygate ones are good and free
http://www.sygate.com/

and finally, empty the recycle bin and do a defrag of the hard drive, youll be surprised at how big a difference it can make :)

Okay, I have a little question for all of you PC wizards out there. A long time ago in a galaxy far far away I had a Packard Hell...err Bell PC. Anyhow, this pc game me so many problems and was really horrible that one of my friends at that point in time came over and without showing me exactly what he did, he deleted some lines of text or commands or something and my pc opened 100 times faster. The PC ran Windows 98 I believe and I think he did all of this through the DOS prompt or in DOS.

Now it is my belief that PC's as you add and remove software/hardware, it creates these lines of text in the autoexec.bat or command.something which prepares you pc for the hard/software. Is this true? If it is or if anyone has an idea of what he did to speed up the loading of the pc when you first turn it on, could you please let me know? If you can write the answer here and drop me a quick, "The answer is there for you", on my profile, I would very much appreciate it.

Thank you guys very, very much for all of your help in this matter. :D
