Quote: Is it possible for me to run JKA, as a playable game not just a server, on FreeBSD? I'm using an ATI Radeon 9600 SE vid card. I'd prefer not to do it in Linux compat mode but am willing if necessary. WINE will run it quite nicely without Linux compat; however, due to your choice of video card vendor, your video settings will have to be quite a bit lower than in Windows. I have a 9600 XT and have achieved decent results on Linux with WINE and JKA at mostly medium settings. You may also have to "work around" some copy protection issues in the WINE driver. If you don't mind using Linux compat and paying some money, Cedega provides a slightly better gaming experience than WINE. _______________ Saving the world, one kilobyte at a time. Right, well, whilst attempting to install Microsoft Visual Studio (for the C# and J# compilers) I was informed I had to upgrade WinXP to SP2. No problem, I thought, I'd been lazy up until then and hadn't installed SP2. So I went through everything, installed SP2 - great, rebooted. Ran the installer again and it said I still needed SP2. Checked the version info in My Computer properties - and it still said SP1. So I reinstalled SP2... same problem. I've tried it several times now, and I can't get it to say SP2 (even though all the SP2 features have been changed/installed). Any ideas? I really need at least the C# compiler to work. _______________ Website |

Ok, as people may have noticed I've had some pretty bad lag spikes on the server and I've traced the blame to my wireless connection. The weird thing is, the lag spikes seem to happen at regular intervals, what I mean is I will play with a fine ping for a minute or so and I'd get a lag spike that lasts around ten seconds. Anyone know how I can combat this problem? _______________ Former padawan of RoseRed |

Quote: Got a problem that is really annoying me. Ive downloaded all of the files in the server for class, and put them in the right place. Typed in the correct IP address and password in the join game option- but when I press play- it just says connecting to *IP Removed* not the actual server name. It says 'Awaiting connection', and just counts how long it takes. Ive waited for about 5 mins numerous times and get bored. Im on a LAN connection at a University. Tigerclaw (member) rekons its a firewall problem- but dont know what to do!! ANY help would be much appreciated! First off, I'm going to make two assumptions: 1) that you are, indeed, using the correct IP and port number, and 2) that you are trying with Jedi Academy (NOT Jedi Outcast, the JK2 Classes server is gone) updated to version 1.01. Tigerclaw is correct. Assuming that you are not using a router, or that if you are, it is not set up to block any outgoing connections, there are two main possibilities: 1) Software firewall incorrectly configured. If you have an updated version of Windows XP SP2, you must manually tell the Windows Firewall to let JK3 through. I don't use it (the Windows Firewall), so I can't tell you how to do that, but I'm sure someone here can. If you're using a third-party firewall product, such as Norton Internet Security, refer to its documentation to find out how to allow outgoing connections. In any software firewall case, the exception that needs to be made is for jamp.exe on any UDP port. 2)Your university's network may block connections on any ports except the most common ones for Web browsing, etc, so as to avoid people clogging up the network with p2p and such. Ask your friendly local sysadmin for details and/or help. _______________ Saving the world, one kilobyte at a time. This comment was edited by tarpman on Jan 23 2006 12:59am. |

I *highly* doubt 1) is the answer - 32 MB should be how much is recommended to use the sound driver *and* whatever else you want to do. While there's very little difference between 98, 98SE, and ME, if the driver specifies 98SE as the minimum, then I'd say there's a very good chance that it won't work with less. Check the Windows 98 SE CD - is it a full or upgrade version? I'm not sure if they did it with that particular one, but most Windows are released as either a "full" or "upgrade" CD. If you have a Full CD, you must go with option 2). If you have an Upgrade CD, you can't go with 2). As for drivers, just get a list of the hardware, download them on your computer, and put them on a CD. (or multiple floppies, or something - multi-disk archives were invented for a reason.) _______________ Saving the world, one kilobyte at a time. Okay, I got a question about Tootsy's computer here. Recently I installed a sound card, which works fine outside of games. It's possible to play CD's, but the soundcard does not play any sound when booting Windows, nor does it play any sound at all when playing a game. Any game. Doesn't even matter which. It's a very old thing, the computer, with 32MB of RAM, but according to the box of the soundcard, 32MB is the minimum amount. It's running Windows 98, while the soundcard-driver requires Windows 98 SE (at the least). When I tried to upgrade their Windows 98 to Windows 98 SE, it gave me some funky error saying that wasn't possible. I can think of two possible solutions, but I can't say which one is right. 1) The PC needs more RAM. While playing a game, all 32MB of Ram are used, and there's no more RAM to play the sound. 2) I could format the entire computer, and put Windows SE on it, but the problem is ... when they got the computer (they got it for free from a friend) they didn't get any of the drivers for the hardware, and I wouldn't know where to get everything. If it's that old (and it is) it should take me quite some time to search for everything. Downloading drivers isn't an option either, because on that particular computer, there is no Internet. What do you guys think is the right step? _______________ Visit the Belouve Family Website! Quote: I try to have fun with my friends and try to make a difference as best I can. Quote: instead, it sounds like it's being played inside a laaaarge room. Does anybody understand what the cause of this problem could be? And how can you solve it? Check the sound driver's configuration; some have options to automatically apply echo, reverb, etc to simulate different environments (why is not my concern). Quote: Just thought I'd say. It turned out the Motherboard was malfunctioning. It was replaced by a new one (the same, just a new one) and all problems stopped I take it back. Everytime I'm doing something (literally 'anything') it shuts down. When it starts up again, it says there is no hard drive present. There is a new motherboard (only 1,5 months old) I completely formatted the drive before I installed everything again, just to make sure I didn't have any conflicting drivers or w/e. Anyway, what can cause this? Last time I had this, I had to replace the hard drive with a new one, but that's only been two years ago. During this time, the Hard Drive only had two format c's. Oh, the hard drive is also partitioned into two partitions. Can this be the problem that's breaking the harddrive each time? Because breaking two hard drives in a set of three years is ridiculous in my opinion, and I must be doing something wrong, I suspect. OK, here's "my" problem: My sister has really managed to screw up the sound on her computer. Let's say she plays music in winamp (though it isn't limited to winamp, this problem applies to all programs that have to do with music/sound)...you'd think the sound of the music would be clean and nice, but instead, it sounds like it's being played inside a laaaarge room. Kind of like the effect you get from playing music/singing in a large church. Does anybody understand what the cause of this problem could be? Motherboards don't just die, there is usually a reason. the most common of which I've found is a faulty power supply which supplies inconsistant voltages to it. This can often be monitored through software provided by the motherboard manufacturer, but the most reliable way is to hook up a multi-meter to the power plug and see what is going on. Cheep power supplies will often do this in my experience. If you're now paranoid about your hardware possibly being damaged, I'd run memtest and any other hardware diagnostics you can get for your hard drives, etc. _______________ "Out the cat5, through the router, down the T1, over the leased line, off the bridge, past the firewall... nothing but 'Net."
