I love the saber duel. I like to watch and get tips anytime I can. I've been on for a couple of weeks again (quit and came back.) My skills have remarkably improved from the first few days LOL. Unfortunately, I wish it was from advice, but mainly it came from watching and a lot of trial and error. Class times are so early in the day and I find it difficult to be on the computer early enough to attend. This applies to weekends as well. I guess I'm out of the "how does this basic move work" newbie stage, so the classes I'd like seem to never be at the right time. This is my bag I know, but I'm hoping that some time soon the planets align and I get into a class. In the meanwhile, like I said, I watch a whole lot and there is something weird I have noticed about the school. I see this sparring going on, but very little advice is given to each other after the duel. One guy comes in jacked up ready to kick some arse and everyone lines up waiting their turn to get slaughtered. This goes on until the master dueller gets thoroughly bored. In the meanwhile, 10 guys bounce around the room, doing god knows what, entertaining themselves I suppose. Once and awhile an admin is present who needs a fix of CTF and breaks up the mob and focuses them on something worth doing besides changing skins and hopping around choatically. I guess it would be nice if the duels were more productive. Each duel should teach you something and I think it would be more productive for learners to hear it from the masters right after the duel. I feel students should duel for points outside of the school on an open server and not on JA servers. I would love to see a guy drop his saber and tell the other guy, "That move you are doing to the left is not working at all." I am guilty of this as well. I do not do this, but I should if I want to be a good JA participant. A big part of duelling is having the confidence you are actually doing damage to your opponent. Too many times I have sparred off with someone and found out when I died, I did barely any damage at all to my opponent. The only advice you are given is the generic "-=GoOd FiGhT!!=-" message. Was it really a "good" fight if your opponent had 100/49 left? Part of learning how to duel is learning how to counteract the moves you see happening. If a master is pounding everyone with a move or combo or whatever, I think it is everyone's right who is watching to be allowed a demonstration of that ability and maybe an impromptu class on how to perform it is in order. Again, points are secondary to my feelings of teaching/learning. All it should take is "show me please" from someone and the demo begins. I think everyone should know what's going through the mind of the person who seems unbeatable at the time. Watching is not enough, watching/doing is what's important. Maybe a tournament would be in order for those who are ready to compete? Sorry if I rambled, but I just had to get it out. Disclaimer: These are just thoughts, only thoughts. I am enjoying my stay here in the JA and will most likely be here for quite some time. JK3 is out tomorrow, woohoo! ![]() _______________ Gone but hopefully not forgotten... |

The Good Fight is a usefull thing. Because you say it, you say that someone else did well, maybe it's not well enough, maybe you got lucky when you pwnd him. But it makes ppl feel better if you say GF or something along those lines. BTW I try to say things that went wrong during the duels if I know that ppl want me too. It can be very frustrating when ppl comment on your style when you are not in the mood for that. But good discussion, I think the last one we had about this was half a year ago. _______________ Personal sleepness-nights-supporter of Virtue. I agree, Syntax, well watched. now, please dont get the "good fight" discussion mixed into that. its up to everyone to say 'gf' or not. Whenever my duel partner did a friggin awesome combo/move whatever I tended to interrupt the duel and ask how/what/why/when to do that. This can be annoying to some duelists, but just asking is free ![]() _______________ One of the Belouve boys, founder of the mighty FiZZsters Midbie council #20 - Fizz - #1933 - Jan '03 - Aug '04 "Renfield, you idiot!" |
