Let a = b

Multiply both sides by a
a² = ab

Add (a² - 2ab) to both sides
a² + a² - 2ab = ab + a² - 2ab

Factor the left, and collect like terms on the right.
2(a² - ab) = a² - ab

Divide both sides by (a² - ab)
2 = 1

That's wrong, when I've got two apples in my one hand, and 1 in the other, two apples don't equal 1 apple. :cool:

heh, I get different :P

Let a = b

Multiply both sides by a
a² = ab

Add (a² - 2ab) to both sides
a² + a² - 2ab = ab + a² - 2ab

Solve equations
2a² - 2ab = a² - ab

Swap sides:
a² = ab

Substitute:
2 x 2 = 2 x 2

Divide both sides by 2
2 = 2 :P

Ok, 4 x 4 = 1?
You get 4 pieces of playdough, mash em together with 4 other pieces. While the volume of the first initial 4 is 4 times the volume, there is still only 1 piece of dough in the end. - There's maths for ya :P

That's the point Talle. It makes people think its correct because they miss obvious math functions such as that. They just look through and say "OMG how is that possible?" And they don't take the time to look for the obvious mistake that make the solution incorrect.

You can easily fool like 80% of the people that see this proof. They tend to forget the easy law, hee-hee. Its a good one though :)

sqrt(1) =1 but also the sqrt(1) = -1. So your math equation is not true. to be true one of your sqrt(1)'s would be -1 and then you would have a true solution.

i = sqrt(-1)

Now -1 = -1/1 = 1/(-1) so...

sqrt(-1) = sqrt(-1)

sqrt(1/(-1)) = sqrt(-1/1)

By properties of radicals:

sqrt(1)/sqrt(-1) = sqrt(-1)/sqrt(1)
sqrt(1) * sqrt(1) = sqrt(-1) * sqrt(-1)
1 * 1 = i * i
1 = -1

Buzz is completely right. We had this little problem on school. The point is you devide an unknown factor, and that factor can take the form of 0. And if that is the case you can't devide. :P

Yes the math is very wrong
a² - ab = 0 AND you cannot divide by zero, and your top is 0 = 0.
