I have an abnormal amount of free time at the moment, so I wrote a few top five lists. Not the most constructive way of spending your time, I agree, but nonetheless somewhat fun. I sent it out to some friends and though some you might enjoy spending a few moments to come up with your own and/or argue with my choices.

Top Five Movies

1. Citizen Kane. (A cliché, I know, but it has to be included. It was the first movie to really display all the possibilities of film. Take a look at the scene where Welles condenses years of married life into on scene over breakfast. Rarely has editing been used so well. And what's more the editing tricks and funky angles never once feel out of place or overbearing, they're always used in exactly the right way. Compare it to the films of directors today who like to use an expanded bag of cinematic tricks e.g. Darren Aronofsky, David Fincher and McG, (who sucks the ball sacks of dead dogs.) Compare it and weep when you realise that 95% of the people making movies today are dickless little hacks.))
2. Remains Of The Day. (Why is this here? It's the only film that troubles me enough to take account of my own life. It's got an important lesson to teach for those that are prepared to heed it. And Hopkins deserved to win the Oscar instead of Tom "Turkey neck club member" Hanks.)
3. Apocalypse Now. (The best war film. Full Metal Jacket comes close, but it doesn't capture the absolute eye-twitching madness of war half as well as this film. Of course it was helped quite a bit by the fact that everyone, but Dennis Hopper in particular, was bug-eyed on drugs the whole time.)
4. Hana-Bi (Fireworks). (A recent addition to the top five. When it really starts moving in the second half it feels like the director (Takeshi Kitano) has realised something fundamental about life. For those of you like a bit more violence with their Japanese then Brother by the same director is well worth your time.)
5. Smoke. (Probably my favourite movie of all time. 'Nuff said, really.)

Top Five Comedy Movies

1. Blazing Saddles. (Also known as the most quotable movie ever.)
2. Monsters Inc. (You undoubtedly think I'm mad, but I don't care.)
3. The Life Of Brian. (You could lump in any Python film (except Live at the Hollywood Bowl) but Brian keeps me coming back..)
4. A Fish Called Wanda. (I laugh from my belly.)
5. Spinal Tap.

Top Five Movie Endings
This needs a little explaining. In this category I consider endings to be the final scene in a movie, NOT the money shot like the Falcon flying out of an exploding death star, or a twist as in The Sixth Sense. These are all what I consider to be graceful endings, final shots or scenes that complete the movie perfectly.

1. The Big Blue
2. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. (Of course.)
3. Monsters Inc. (Seriously.)
4. Casablanca.
5. The Apartment. (Near Perfect.)

Special Mention: Vertical Limit. For being the only Action/adventure movie to give the final shot to commemorate the small army of supporting characters who die while helping the hero. Otherwise the movie is worth marginally more than my vomit.

Top Five Comedy TV Series

1. Seinfeld.
2. Cheers
3. The Simpsons (Lump in Futrama in here as well.)
4. The Fast Show
5. The League of Gentlemen.

Top Five Books
1. Daughter Buffalo by Janet Frame
2. The New York Trilogy by Paul Auster
3. Remains Of The Day by Kazuo Ishiguro (When We Were Orphans comes close to topping it, though.)
4. Treasure Island by R.L. Stevenson. (The best adventure novel written. Ever.)
5. That book written by Steinbeck about his best mate who died. Bugger. Always forget the title of that.

Top Five Albums

1. Mutations –Beck
2. Cure For Pain –Morphine
3. OK Computer –Radiohead (total cliché, but had to be included.)
4. Blood On The Tracks –Bob Dylan
5. O Esprito do Paz –Margedeus

Top Five Comics

1. Watchmen (Only for the formalist aspects, though.)
2. From Hell (Moore's best work)
3. Jimmy Corrigan (Will make you cry and reach for the noose.)
4. Hicksville (Yes. I am a stalker.)
5. The entire run of Griffen/Demattis Justice League America (Bwah ha ha)
