Poor Lestat? True, kinda :D

LOL...He gets what he thought he wanted, in a way. The knowledge that what he believed (the aesthetic laws...;)) were correct.

It just goes to show that we REALLY should be careful what we wish for...LOL

Reminds me of part of a Keats poem...Lamia I believe..'Philosphy will clip an Angel's wing.'

That's why books that don't conclude everything rule ;)

EDIT:///gonna add a review,else I'll be an OT bunny again :(

Here's a BAD trilogy...The Defender's of magic trilogy, by Mary Kirchoff. The three are 'Night of the Eye', 'The Medusa Plague' and 'The Seventh Sentinel.'

These are perfect examples of how NOT to write fantasy literature, especially within the wonderfully well-constructed D&D settings. The characters are flat and two-dimensional, the sequences are lacklustre and the action is continually at the same pace. The first is the best of the three, and I would even reccomend it if it wasn't for the way that the sequels are set up...

Hence I wouldn't reccomend the first because you'd be tempted to read the others too, lol. It's not so much that they are BAD, as much as they are nowhere near the quality of other books in the setting.../edit

EDIT2:// eek! realised that Sniya asked for books to be reccommended..am OT again!! I'm cursed:(:(/edit

You're right Khalek about Memnoc the Devil being a great book. I have never seen a writer pull off heaven, hell, The devil, and God in such a fantastic adventure such as this. One of the better books with a thrilling end that did make me smile. I was quite pleased with it. Come to think of it I'll read it again soon. It's been a few years. Poor Lestat!;):D

If you like Anne Rice, then 'Memnoch' is a good 'un:). Nice and dark, like all her stuff, with that stamp of optimism in her main character that can't help but bring a smile to yer face..like this :D.

It's not so vampire-centric, so this is quite a good intro to her style if you ain't a big bloodsucker fan.:P The real winning side of this, for me, is the way it explores what the devil actually could be...very Blakean in some respects:) (I think that she points this out herself quite early on...I think:))

And Blake rules...no need to ask;) Especially 'the Poison Tree.'

*kicks self for going OT again*

um....Terry Pratchett seems to be getting better with age...the complexity ofthe issues he deals with now matches the quality of his brilliant humour. 'The Colour of Magic' and 'The Light Fantastic,' while good, don't grab me as much as the later witches books (of which 'Equal Rites' is easily the worst:()

'Masquerade' in particular is a wonder...and of course I love 'The Truth'...it's Wordsey!;)

BTW, I have a signed ed of that one, so it's even better (Especially as it was a present..there's no damn way I'M gonna queue up LOL).

You can't go wrong with Dune or LOTR however; Anne Rice is my favorite writer. Anything she's written would be great but my favorite would have to be Anne Rice's The Vampire Lestat. It's deep and complex. Often times I felt as though I had read a couple of novels when I had only read just that one. The complexity is not overwhelming and Anne Rice articulates each environment quite. If you're feeling sad and feel the need to confirm that sadness read Interview with a Vampire first just to keep the series in chronological order. The Vampire Lestat is not so much sad but more hopeful of a book. Now for an even more powerful book and a lesson in history you could always read The Feast of all Saints. I'll stop there:)

ooooooh

hard question that but:

Dune is awesome as a series
LOTR, if you haven't read it you should do
Stephen King's The Stand (unabridged version) is great
Terry Brooks - Voyage of the Jerle Shannara trilogy is also very good
hitchhikers guide - definite good read
any of Terry Pratchett's books are also good if you like a bit of comedy
alliance of light trilogy - Janny Wurts is worth reading if you like fantasy books
Tom Clancy's books are good for a bit of light reading - hunt for red october is one of his better books in my opinion

i could go on and on forever to be honest, so i'll stop now!

Just finished Jane Eyre. Was very pleasantly surprised:). It's not Sense+Sensibility, but it's very good nevertheless.

Especially if you think romantic/victorian fiction is about pathetic women being swept off their feet. A good, solid female lead brings this one into my happy list:):):)

There are so many GREAT books that have been written over all time...there are too many to list but my favorite would have to be

Dune
By Frank Herbert

Now the other books in the series are great as well but i dont think that they can compare with this great book. The first time i read it I went in a trance. I believe to be greatest novel of all time. (note movie and miniseries are okay...to say the most(in my opinion)) Trully a great book. One could proably guessed that from my name and pic.

P.S. Cousins Favorite Book: Wild Magic- Tamora Pierce

Swift kicks ass - it's poetry, but try the Battle of the Books, LOL

Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time IS pretty sweet..am waiting for him to actually release a 10th book rather than mess around with his original one...grrr. Particularly note the similarity between the male lead in this and Terry Goodkind's books..the dilemmas they face (partiularly Richard Rahl) are typical of the modern fantasy series, and are one of the reasons that we keep coming back to them.

Tolkien uses them a bit (Arwen springs to mind) but is more notable in that his characters and the action/plot is subordinate to the world that he situates them in. History and geography play an important role in The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillon.

If you like that style, then there is really no-one who compares. Tolkien rules (although his son is a leeching punk:)). However, if you prefer action based narrative, especially in fight sequences, then the Salvatore books that have been mentioned are superb.

If you instead would rather have a mythological background, targeted at a 'classically educated' (ROTFLMAO, hehe) reader, then how about either 'The Ill Made Mute' for it's basis in Celtic and English folklore or the good 'Lord of the Crooked Paths' for Titan-based greek-mythos fun.

The former is by Celia Dart-Thornton (I think), and is an excellent start to my favorite trilogy at the moment (yes, even above LotR). It's heavy going if you're unfamiliar with some of the legends, like me, but others will be instantly recognisable as they are worked into a beatuifully descriptive narrative.

I can't remember who Lord of the Crooked Paths is by, someone Atkins?... (help anyone?) but it is quite good. Good characters, interesting basis for the plot etc. It doesn't excel in any one area, but is quite fun :)

That'll do for the mo. I'll be getting hate mail :D

Seeya

EDIT:// Read 'Stupid White Men' recently...LMAO. Michael Moore reminds me of Voltaire, which is VERY odd, lol. I agree with him on most stuff, but I was surprised at just how inherently corrupt the funding for the American democratic system was...just assumed it was a joke like here in England. A damn good read...am looking for his Bowling for Columbine film to see if it's any good :D

I'd suggest you all give The Wheel of Time a try. Robert Jordan has an interesting way of twisting common fantasy icons... Good stuff. :D

I've read the series up to book nine, which is a feat, since I don't normally like reading.

I am the type of person that likes to be out of the real world when I read/play hence I am here at a star wars site. Ok, with that said, I have read many fantasy books and by far the most compelling, best written and best work is the LOTR. Now you say big deal everybody likes that but have you really sat and read what Tolkien has done to his work. He has made up a whole new world from the beginning. Created new things, people and unspeakable evil. Not to mention a whole new language or several. He has refined it almost to perfection. His writing, in my opinion is extremely hard to surpass. A genius he was and the books I shall ever treasure as the best I have read.

There is another set of books that I like but not quite as near to the calibar of LOTR. The series starts with The Dragonbone Chair by Tad Williams. Pretty good. Along the same lines as Tolkien with swords and uspeakable evil lurking.

That is my penny worth,
red deer.

All of these are great but some of the best books I have ever read are by Michael Moore. You want scary read Stupid White Men and Dude Where's My Country?. Fiction can never come close to the evil, dispicable, scary things that happen in your own backyard. As far as fiction anything in this thread or House of Leaves and God's Debris. That is if you like your brain sucked out, squashed, atomized ,reconstituted, chopped, diced, pureed, liquified, frozen, thawed, shipped to Alaska, then the moon, then alpha centauri, then back home, reasembled, and reinserted. They are the best MIND FREAK books. If you like to see the world from a new point of view:D or just to have it messed with in a major way.

PS.If you don't like new ideas RUN AWAY, RUN AS FAR AND AS FAST AS YOU CAN.

PPS.I recomend these to everyone I meet even total strangers. They are that good.

PPPS.If you don't believe me call me at home and I will tell you in person.:D

PPPPS.They have absolutely nothing to do with religion.:D:D:D
