Why isn't JA like this?

Well, I was a-wandering about the web, when lo and behold I happened upon a website. Not just any site, mind you, but the site for the new "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" game for PS2 and XboX. Looking at the gameplay footage available on the site, I had one question for myself: why is JA not like this? rather than jumping and rolling and hardly clashing sabers, you would be dodging and blocking and parrying. It just seems more....swordplay-ish than JA. Now don't get me wrong, I think JA is pretty damn good but...well, we all admit it's JO with new stuff. Same engine (or so close its hard to tell the difference), same combat style, etc... Sure, there are the few "that came straight out of the movie" moments we all experience in MP or SP, but those are far fewer than they should be. But anyhoo, enough ranting, I'll link to the site so you all can see what I mean:

maybe just add a block button or something. I do like the mobility, I just think it's overused. When people move around for 5 minutes without hitting thier opponent, something needs fixing.

I can see your point, but if its all about standing there, physically and manually blocking all the swings what does it become ? No more than a fighting game like street fighter (no arguments, that was THE best fighting game EVER)

In theory having fights just like the movies would be great, but in practice it would make all the levels feel to big, duelers would be even easier pickings for gunners and you'd lose the freedom you have of attacking multiple people at once or running off, pulling out a gun, using a force power etc.

JK:JA needs fixing, but not changing. If I had it my way it'd be JKII but with more bells and whistles :D

Yeah, I totally know where you're comming from. I think alot of it could be fixed if people stopped playing so over-defensivly. They just WAIT for you to attack....its not so much a battle of saber skills...as much it is a battle of patience. I mean...yeah i could sit there all day too...but why? How much are you possible going to learn by waiting for your opponent to attack, the whole time trying to get behind him. Yeah....ok that's how you win duels...but who cares?

Think back to the deuling in the movies. when was the last time you fought like that in JA? Sure, there's jumping and wall-running and such, but generally there's less movement on the legs, more clashing of the sabers. I've seen fights where both combatants are just running around swinging and barely, if ever, hitting each other. Heck, I've BEEN one of the combatants doing that. And in bugs me. Now, for SP this system works fine, due to multiple enemies and such, but.....MP just seems like it's a lot more luck than skill. And while those that are skilled will win more than those who are not, it (I think) is mainly due to knowing when to get the hell out of the way. Rather than: Block, block, parry, thrust, attack, block, dodge, dodge, jump, attack, block, etc.., we have: jump, jump, jump, roll, attack, attack, jump, block, etc.... And maybe if we're lucky, we get a counter off somewhere in there. Now I'm not saying I can think of a better way to do it, off the top of my head, nor am I saying the current system is worthless. I just think there is room for improvement. And that rather than focus on the "cool new sabers", raven should have focused on what one can do with said sabers.

But maybe thats just me.

I think he was speaking in general, not console. Throwing the question 'would JA be better if we spent our time blocking rather than dodging'

I think game play would be adversely affected. You could never concentrate on running up walls if you had two keys for left-foot-step and right-foot-step. I think it might cross over into the simulator realm.

To be honest, it won't be as good as it looks :) Consoles are very limited in what they can do meaning that this will mostly turn out like one of those dreadful Lord of the rings games with the weird camera angles, good looking fighting sequences but no real control over what you do....
