By the time I'm writing this comment, the forums have been filled with posts for dear Vladarion. I too am deeply touched, but at the same time it made me wonder why. This post is not so much about Vlad, but perhaps it is intended in the spirit he always wanted it to be. This one's about me. And you guys. We're a gaming community. Meaning we play computer games online, and train eachother. However, there is a percentage of our community... the kind of people of people posting on forums, the kind of people chatting in IRC, the kind of people who talk to eachother on the servers, to which this has become more than a gathering place for game enthusiasts. A month back, I had a training session with Virtue and a person who shall remain unnamed, and he shared a secret about the real reason for joining this Academy: it's as close to real Jedi training as you can get. This doesn't mean you can levitate objects, or handle a saber with great skill. It means it's as close to an ideal, a philosophy, a world far away, as you can get. The kind of people we attract to form the core of our community share this kind of bond. This is, perhaps, why this has touched me far greater than I would've thought. We're not just adding small roleplaying elements to our community by simulating their training. We're aspiring to reach that fantasy, to be those kind of people. Not only do I believe that is the succes to our integrity as a community, I think that's why we're able to support eachother, why we're sensitive to eachother. I think Vladarion lived his real life in that spirit. Heaven knows I try to. We talk to eachother about our lives more than we do about the game a lot of the times, but this is the kind of communication we evolved into. This is the kind of place we've become, and I am very proud of it. To echo Vladarion's signature: The force will be with us. Always. ~Ken |

Amen Kenyon, your 100% right...When CT told me the news, I was very upset about it, I cried. It was a total shocker to me at first to have tears filling my eyes over someone I only knew on the computer. Its a true testament to the bonds we have formed on this game, and in this community. I totally concur. I also found myself wondering how is it that a gaming community such as us would be so affected by one of our fellow players? Personally, I never knew Vlad myself, but I'm still affected. Why? I think what you said that this community, this Academy, is the closest we can get to the Jedi way, in terms of its core of compassion, honor, sensitivity to everything around us...I think that you hit the answer to my question right on the head. If we weren't drawn to the Academy's emphasis on learning and teaching, honorable competition, compassion to those weaker or less skilled than us, then I think we would not have reacted as strongly to Vlad's death as we have. This is what makes me so proud to be part of you guys...this is what keeps me checking up on the site, even though I may not play JK a lot lately. And this is why I know, without a doubt, that this Academy will live on and exist for a long time in the future. Long live the Academy, and may you rest in peace, Vlad. _______________ memento mori |
