Give me your advice

I've got a problem and I'd like your help/advice.

Months ago I began to lose interest in jk2, it became old and I had made very little progress for someone who is in the academy for a year at that time.

Luckily I found a master, Nightcrawler. His personal training and the prospect of maybe becoming a knight once gave me new energy to get on. However, my master became very inactive for weeks. Some weeks ago we had contact again and my master had lost interest in jk2 as well and thought of retiring.

The reason for this is Jedi Academy. It just doesn't appeal to him and me. I never was a star in jk2 but i just got the feeling that my skills had improved a bit. Now jk2 is destined to die a very slow death, and all students are expected to proceed to jk3. I don't like jk3, like many others, i find the duelling very different from jk2, very chaotic and to me uncontrolable. Playing in the servers isn't fun for me if I can't duel. My master is thinking of staying but will, like is expected, abandone jk2 and has offered to train me in jk3. I'm not very confident in that, since we both have no experience in jk3.

It seems to me that I've got the following options.

1. Continue jk2, my skills have proved unable to improve and jk2 will be over soon.

2. Let jk2 fall and try to learn jk3, including searching new personal training. Playing a game that I don't like hoping I will like it on the long term costs a lot of energy and time and isn't fun.

3. Try to make jk2 popular again, there are still many people who prefer jk2. However, the game is old and the Council's policy will make a revival hard (for instance, it's impossible to advance in the ranks in jk2)

4. Leave the Academy. I am seriously considering this.

The past weeks I've tried to be a lot in the servers but it doesn't offer me much, I find it increasingly less entertaining. The reason I've been active is the community, I tend to read the forums a lot and spend time in IRC but all this is very time-consuming.

What then should I do?

hey sup man i know how u feel i played jedi knight dark forces 2 for 6 years now :\ and going on to new stuff is hard. I mean u dont have the skills the motivation. me myself ive never had the honor of playing jk2 like i still want too i just got my hands on a new computer with over 100 gb or hard drive space :D. for free. so in my case i just bought ja and got to try it because all of us who know of jedi knight dark forces 2 players all have sucky comps. Now im stuck with ja and im starting to like it. Even though i regret getting my ass royally beat about 500 times....but i learned quick enough. now its fun anyway its still your choice but to make things much simpler.......just give it a shot man u might like it. and if i ever get the chance to buy jk2 i will do it in a heartbeat. peace out man:alliance:

Thanks a lot for your help everyone. Having considered all your advice I've decided.

I think I'll try to learn jk3. But before I embrace your help I think it is wise to take a break. I must figure out what I want, and what to do. I'll avoid contact and won't play on the servers. I will even fight my forum addiction.
I can't say how long I'll be away, might be some days, or a week, or longer. My absence starts here, and now.

Goodluck, thank you and goodbye

Do you think of the Academy as something just for SW games? You CAN stay here and not play the game, some people do it and we treat them the same -maybe better- way that we do with all the others (e.g. helen).

Well it's up to you if you want to abandon JK2. My suggestion is learn JKA, and you'll see it's not as chaotic as you think it is. You might even like it.

It's up to you to decide, but I remind you that the Jedi Academy is not just for SW games ;)

Ulic, you have an advantage here with that IRC :). I've tried for many weeks, heck months to get the IRC to work but to no avail. Being in the community is one of the most important here, for which it gives the ability to get to know everyone, which you have. They obviously care alot about you because you see the posts below mine.

Feeling like I was losing my touch here (simply because a duel should be a duel and not a saberlocking fest where those who can mash buttons faster find the victory, to each I duel I apologize for a saberlock, those that have dueled me know that), so I found solace in a clan, that of which frequented the JA servers. I still come be the jk3 JA servers here and there, but remember, this is a place of learning, a teaching facility, and like all those that attend school, you progress to a certain point and move on. By no means am I saying leave, nor am I saying you should stay. You should go with what your heart feels, that doesn't lie.

Although the fighting style and the way things are can seem chaotic (when i first started using staff (I tried duels, very few who i've seen use it like they know it), it seems like a mess. How could you fight with something so out of control and all over the place? Well believe it or not, there is control to it. Took a good few months of play to finally see it, but as of now, I can admit that there is flow and control to how these new styles work. Not knocking single by no means, that still has a strong backing and whoops me thoroughly still! But now I am rambling. The point of the past few sections, seriously give it a chance if you stick around. TSid makes an excellent point. Doesn't take a higher up to give advice, any of us will be glad to spare it given the chance. This is all the advice I can offer....

I'm sorry to say so but after being here for over a year things do get less exciting. But you're right, this is a great opportunity to talk to lots of people from all over the world.

Is there anyone else who prefers jk2?

Your choise is tough indeed.. The difference in the two games is large, but perhaps not too large? Personally, I try to play more Jedi Academy now. Still, I like to join JK2 servers, and when I do, I find it more enjoyable to play both games. It becomes something special when you join a JK2 server again :P. Maybe you could try learning JKJA, while dropping by on JK2 servers once in a while to pwn? :D

The choise is yours..
but - whatever you do, don't leave. Please remember how the Academy is also the best online community you've ever seen ;). Like Mr. Sid said, the atmosphere itself around this place is amazing!

Heh. Take it from JJ and I, two people who tried to leave like half a dozen times...

If you actually do end up deciding to leave, at least stick with the community. I mean, the IRC chat has got to be one of the most entertaining passtimes online I've come across!

I know there are lots of people who stick to playing JK2 also. Hell. Look at that game X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter. Lots of people still play that (at least, last time I checked...), That damn game just never died.

From what I understand, JK2 is also still widely played on the public servers, let us not forget about those, shall we? Granted there is less of a presence, but that's really to be expected. There are still players.

As far as learning JK3 goes, remember this is the JEDI ACADEMY!! More and more classes will be coming for JK3 and, no matter how confusing or chaotic the game may seem, I'm sure you can still enjoy those? If not for the game, for the atmosphere.

Lastly but most certainly not least, I expect that anybody here will be willing to teach what they know. Not just a single person. So feel free to garnish the knowledge you have from JK2 with that from anyone else's.

I know that I, for one, will be glad to help - and if the Knight Recommendation Thread is any indication, I'm not the only one. Good luck in your decision, Ulic. I'm sure that whichever one you make will be the right one for you.

Yes, I'd like to agree with the two previous posts

I can't tell you what to do
but it should at least be one of the first three

Though we don't "really" know each other, I'd hate it to see you leave

so don't leave

and about jk2
I kinda had the same problem a while back, I lost interest too...
now you'll see me more on jk2 then on jk3
:)

Give it some time first
don't make any rash decisions

Even though I bug the hell out of you, one thing I don't want you to do is leave. Everything depends on what it is you want to achieve. Do you want self-satisfaction knowing that you have skill in a game? Then stick to JK2, and play with those who still play it. If you want to be recognised for your skill, then go to JK3, because there are simply more people playing it. Just don't leave!!!
