The new Beta3 Map...

Post your comments, statements, etc. here. Here is the review that I originally wrote for this map. Now, given, it was a LOT more sarcastic, but heck, it WAS 1:30 AM when I wrote it so I was kinda out of it. It also was somewhat offensive to some people and for that I would like to publicaly apologize for. In the meantime, commence with the ranting and raving...

Okay. I can sum up the entirety of my feelings, reasons and analysis about this map in a few sentances, even though the reasons for which might take a few paragraphs longer. :D

Dom's map simple and elagantly so, but it was good for one simple reason: it made you feel as if you were actually on Yavin 4, in the actuall Academy that Luke Skywaler (along with a little help from ILM and Skywalker Sound ;)) created. This was the same for all the Jedi Knight games, this is what made them good.

So where to start? ;)

Lets start in the courtyard. What are these spikey things? It looks more like something that that came out of a quake 3-based game. Oh wait...(slap) It looks like Quake architechture straight out of the first and original Quake, or the second, or the third...whatever, enough about that. Also, I'm not quite sure how to explain this, but neither of the rock formations feel like they should be there. If anything maybe a sculpture or something should be an order.

Force Training Wing. I had discussed this several times with DJ and others and I believe we came to the conclusion that, since we are not a Light side or Dark Side academy, there was no need for specialized rooms. That and the fact that, what would architechture have to do with the usage of force powers? With the exception of the moveable blocks (which aren't even moveable) then there is really no need for these wings. Rather, a more expansive weapons training and/or vehicle area would be put to better use.

Movement Training Wing. The jump room is good. I believe there are a good many lessons to be taught there. Even though the part that is sunk into the ground may be a bit begging for a bit more room. The middle room would be better put to use as a matrix room or something else. The Pillar Training room. This may have been what NFF had drawn, but not what he had intended. Put simply, this training room teaches nothing. It is too easy to complete and master. If I may turn your attention to Griffinclaws Jedi Council map for Jedi Outcast. In the room to the right of the stairs. This is the room that I learned and masterd the art of jumping. It is of a similar layout, but not quite so easy to master. Also, why not label the top of each pillar with a small charachter, Say, A-Z and let students practice jumping from one point or another point or from one to another in a certain order? Okay, bad time to start ranting. :)

Lightsaber Training Wing. Matrix room, well done. In fact they even managed to make the mat 12X12 as it is in the original. :) The Pillar room could use some improvement. First of all, its all too easy to fall from the central pillar to one of the adjacent pillars, why? Cause you have enough room to run at normal speed instead of walk. Also, the pillar heads should be about a quarter the diameter they are. This keeps the duelist from letting go of the shift key (or whatever other button you have that slows you down). One of the lessons that the Pillar teaches is control. To slow down and use your combos and attacks with intent instead of just swinging madly. Also, it should be darker, like the older pillar rooms. :D The Glass room is also decent, I think the original one was the best simply because it had more room all in all.

Garden. Woah! Is it just me or is this just WAY to big? Come on! Is it a garden or a lake or a river or a what? If it were a river then it should flow on and you shoule have a bank that leads off into the trees and the jungle. If it were a lake then it should be a LOT bigger, the entire area period that is. If it were a garden then it should be a LOT smaller and have more statues, with a much more artifical pond with, say, stone lining and pillars in it instead of the dead trees. Again, what is up with the spikey lining along the ceiling?!? (Nothing personal, it just messes with the yavin-ish feeling) The whole pillars-run-against-the-wall thing is really messing with my head, expecially in that pattern. Take out most of them and leave, say, every third or fourth one and it might look a little better. Also, match the textures up with the textures in the other areas (stone used, ground used) to try and give it a uniform look. As is, they look like two entirely different worlds.

Vehicle Training Wing. Okay, personally, the 'garage' doesn't look like its on yavin. There are two styles that should be attempted with this. Either go much more yavin, and make it look like some fueling and mantinence equipment had been moved there to take care of the vehicles, OR go for the more professional look, like they had decided to blow and chisel out the walls and make a functional mantinance garage down there. Now, my FAVORITE part of the entire map so far is the racing course. It has everything. Big jumps, great
speedzones, suicide turns, and dangit, it's hard to finish! :D Now it could be touched up a bit cosmetically, but the current layout is awesome! Thank you FaDed!

Armory. Great idea, could have been executed a little better. First, could we please rotate the entire area by nintey degrees or so? That way people can come in from the side and watch from a safe and secure, AND currently nonexistent observatory. You know, so I can watch without having a hole burned through my chest? That would kinda ruin my day. I AM glad that this is the one section of the entire map that does not overdo the whole spikey-topped wall thing. Also, the ground is another texture. Again I feel as if I am walking on to part of a different planet or something.

Oh, and the maze rocks by the way. ;)

Again, to sum it all up, I do not feel the sense of realism that the Dom's maps gave off.

If anything, blame this on fiZZ, HE was the one that suggested I write this. :D

I critisize because I care. I hope that these notes can help make a better and more immersive map for the community to enjoy. :)

Still too sarcastic? Let me know about it, will gladly touch it up. :D

It wasn't the NPCs causing the servers errors ;) It was the staff saber locks.

Because if NPC's are causing server errors, you can't get to them, if a JAK+ locks the door with the control room door stuff. Also, a JAK+ only need to tele to one place to have a hub of telepad's to all the places on the map. Beyond this, it's a quiet place where the JAK+ can relax and take a break from their duties, or teach their apprentices/padawans.

This map even contains a JAK+ room. I had some arguments over such things yesterday on IRC but it seems like no-one listens to me :P

No seriously why would be need a JAK+ room in the map?

And also, I like the idea of specified Force and such. Even if this is a non-oriented Force academy, part of being Jedi is being open minded. Specifications are okay.

I think this map should be fixed in terms of lighting, lag, and other small issues. If Scared's input is to be used, I hope you consider them as "Beta 4" after Beta 3 is fixed as I stated above. :)

In all sums, fix this and take Scared's suggestions for a new version. I personally like how it is, and I'm saying this for the sake of those that may prefer beta 3 over a possible beta 4. Regardless, I'll still go with anything! My faith is with the mappers.

Thx cmad, and yes, ICARUS is supported in JK3, and if you want to script them, then you are more than welcome to.

I agree with Sared, and I stated my opinion too in the news post.

And btw, no criticizing THIS beta isn't wrong. Cuz as we can see in the news post, only minor changes will be made for the final map. So don't accuse Sared of this.

Can't the moveable blocks be made moveable? I thought JK3 supported ICARUS for multiplayer. Even without scripting it should be possible.
