Agreed. Check out John Allen Paulos' A History of Pi for some no-holds-barred commentary on the Roman Empire (and later in the book, the Soviet Empire). But a lot of interesting things happened during Rome's long history. A separate Greek thread would be cool. I actually studied classical Greek for a couple terms in college. If you really want to learn some roman history read some of Plutarch's work especially the Makers of Rome and the Fall of the Roman Empire. My favorites so far are Fabious Maximus and Marcellus and their on going battles with Hannibal.
