Anyone notice that that story has been made into 6 or 7 movies already? Gladiator, The Colesseum, etc.

I must not fear . Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear . I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

In fact, if we start a greek thread, we need one other for Egypt too :) They were most of the times peacefull and were the first to free the women condition ;)

And they didn't have any slaves...

yeah, Ovidus. :)

well, greek and roman history are quite similiar, but the romans were too decadent in the end.

Halendor, the Greeks might have provided the base for our cultural heritage, the Romans at least had a sense of humour ;)

Agreed. Check out John Allen Paulos' A History of Pi for some no-holds-barred commentary on the Roman Empire (and later in the book, the Soviet Empire).

But a lot of interesting things happened during Rome's long history. A separate Greek thread would be cool. I actually studied classical Greek for a couple terms in college.

Check out The Roman Record. Your library probably has it or can get it via inter-library loan. I have my own copy.

If you ever turn on C-SPAN and think, "My Gawd, watching Congress in session is indistinguishable from watching Jerry Springer, pick up The Annals of Imperial Rome by Tacitus. He gives first-hand accounts of the Senate in session that should dispell any doubt that human nature is the same in all times and places. Nothing has changed.

If you really want to learn some roman history read some of Plutarch's work especially the Makers of Rome and the Fall of the Roman Empire. My favorites so far are Fabious Maximus and Marcellus and their on going battles with Hannibal. Its all a good read.
