It's because female emperor penguins lay the egg, and then leave. The male is the one who actually keeps the egg warm, usually until it hatches. I think it's somewhere in the neighborhood of around 9 weeks, maybe. By the time the female gets back to actually take care of the baby pengy, the male has lost most of his body weight because...surprise surprise...he couldn't go out looking for food! That's where the mother was this whole time, she was out stuffin' her beak full of fish.
