I've known this for a while, but what is with Jedi being an official freakin' religion! Over 50% of problems in the world are religion related, why make another one? This was probably made by some nerd sitting at home (no Aratan, not you) thinking 'how can i make my self noticed? *snort*'. Now, there's over 20,000 bloody members!

I have to admit, it's kinda silly.

how about you?

If the Jedi religion makes those 20.000 people live their life in a (in their opinion) better way I don't think it's silly.

There has been research done, and with humans you can't speak of races, we are too identical, even the most different humans only differ geneticly at 0.0003 percent of the DNA, now that's not much :P BTW, I still call a native American an Indian, since they lived there first, all the European conquerers that came after that (so most ppl taht live in America nowadays) are just that, Europeans.

Alaskan-American. I love it!

I might start identifying myself as an Ohioan-American. Of course, I wasn't born in Ohio. Maybe an Illinoisan-American, or even a Chicagoan-American. I identify more with Ohio, though, since that's where I've lived continuously since 1994.

One thing I love is how some people are "Native Americans" while others, despite having been born here, are supposedly not. Ask a race huckster to justify this, and he'll say it's because their ancestors were also born here. Well so were mine, going back to Colonial times. Then they'll say it's because somewhere back in the murky past I have an ancestor who migrated here from somewhere else...But the same is true of everyone else! The human race did not originate on this continent. As far as I'm concerned, anyone born here is a native.

So yeah, Ohioan-American. Has a nice ring to it.

Sorry guys.

When I first heard this I thought it was some kind of tax shelter thing, because here in America there is no such thing as an "official" religion. If you declare Sex-With-Turkeys-ism to be your religion, then that's your religion. The First Ammendment gives you that right.

Individual churches are "official" only in the sense that they have applied for and received tax-exempt status. You wouldn't believe some of the "churches" that have this status. This is because the government is not allowed to say, "That's not a 'real' religion." Our Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, so if you believe in a religion, then you can found a church for it and get tax-exempt status.

The web site I reference above takes the position that it's somehow immoral to lie to the census about your religion. Personally, I think it's immoral for the government to ask about such things. I think one is morally obligated to give them a b.s. answer.

Here in America the government is obsessed with classifying everyone by race. Only the Nazis under Hitler, the Communists under Stalin and South Africa under Appartheid collected as much detailed information about race as our government. We're expected to check a box that classifies us as one of several races, and when people who complained that they fall into two or more of those categories complained and asked for "mixed-race" categories, the Demnocrats went ballistic. Mixed categories would make racial classifications meaningless, they argued to a nation of people who are sick of being classified by race rather than by the content of our character. No we're supposed to pick one category to be pidgeon-holed in.

That argument didn't last long. In the last census, millions of Americans, myself included, checked the "other" box for race and wrote in "American," which is what we all are as far as I'm concerned, if we must have a race. We're a melting pot.

In my case, the census bureau took aggressive action and sent someone directly to my front door to harass me at 7:00 a.m. on a Saturday. She claimed that they just never got my form, so she was there to collect my information. Looking over her clipboard, I noticed that shew had already filled out part of it before ever meeting me, including race, which she had marked Caucasian. So then I knew the real reason my form had been "lost." I corrected her on the race, and she grudgingly changed it to "American." I hope she didn't get in trouble for that, but I also hope she didn't change it as soon as she was out of my sight.

This is (part of) the problem with big government prying into things like a person's religion.

I think census questions like that should have a box to check that says "None of your f#&*ing business"...and that it should be the only box available to check.

I think that the 'Jedi religion' basicly shows many simularity's with boedhism... There isn't a real 'god' and it's basicly all about controlling yourself (both physicly and mentaly).

I'd prefer boedhism over playing with a lightsaber in RL though;)

I wouldn't mind joining if they actually uphold the values of the Jedi Knights.

But, since we live in this *cough*wonderful*cough* world, they will most likely screw it up, deviate from their original beliefs, and start killing people, like most of the other religions in this world.

"Before reaching Knighthood, all Jedi make a sacrifice. It is not required by the Master, nor is it a part of the Jedi Code to do so. It happens naturally. A sacrifice which shows your dedication to the Force, and to a new life, based on selflessness. This may be someone close to you, that you come to realize you must let go of in order to follow your path. It may be a certain addiction, or passion for something that would inhibit your abilities. It is not necesarilly your choice as to what you give up, and it is also a mile stone at which will decide your destiny. Choose wisely, and may the Force be with you."

Yeah, there aren't bad things in movies, just planets being blown up by evil Sith Lords....but seriously, I agree that if everyone acted like Jedi then the world would be a better place. If they want to make it a religion, I don't care, let them do what they want.
