looking for a master/paddawan - threads

Hi all!

I want to discuss the two threads of master-paddawan-arrangements. Before I start, I want to ask you: do those threads help you finding a paddawan/master? Actually I would need two polls, for master and student's one for each. But I only have on, so we will see how it will work.

To point out my opinion before we have poll-results: I think this two threads are not very useful. I really believe that they produce more mistakes than they help to find a master/paddawan. That has many reasons, and I try to explain them as good as possible:

The meaning of these threads is a kind of place where master and student can find each other. Or, it's a place where the Student/Master can say that they WANT to have a Master/paddawan. The question is: is it useful to do it that way?
Especially new members must think that you need to look for a master, even if you tell them again and again they don't need to. And maybe they think you need to ask for being someone's paddawan and maybe he says 'yes' and everything is fine. But the reality is: it doesn't work that way. You can't just run around and ask everyone to me his paddawan. And that it doesn't work is based in the meaning of paddawan/master relationship. A master and paddawan will spend a lot of time together. What the paddawan do falls back to the master and the other way too. The master need to trust his paddawans and the paddawans need to trust the master. It's more than a normal teacher/student - relationship like it is in the school. You will be friend with each other. And that is something you can't 'advertise' in a thread. In a thread you can say that you basically want to have a master/paddawan. But that doesn't make you find someone. To point that one more time out: new member can't know that. They can't know what the meaning of being a paddawan is. So they think they need to post in that thread that they want to be a paddawan of someone and get disappointed because it doesn't work.

This part goes mostly to the students:
But how should a student who is looking for a master act than, if he can't just ask for it? Well, as is said, you will be friends and you need to trust each other. So if master and student want to find to each other, they need to know each other before the relationship starts. As student that means: running around and get known to more skilled players. Have fun with other players, go to classes to get known to some JAK+ and speak with them on their profiles or in IRC. DONT ask in the first 10 min to be his paddawan. Make sure you like each other. Spend some time with some more skilled persons. Maybe ask them if they can teach you a little bit, most of them will say yes. And maybe after some weeks, you feel that you blend together. And that's the right point to ask for it. Maybe the master asks you before you can ask him, that's even better. But if you feel you can't spend a lot of time together, don't say instantly 'yes'. Think about your decision, its not unimportant. And if a master asks you and you say "wait, I need to think about that", don't mean that you don't get an other chance. Nearly all 'oldbes' stay to their word, no matter if you think about that offer or not. You don't gonna lose your chance if you say you need to think about it.
And that goes especially to those who think now: 'I do it exactly like he says, than I'll get a master': I don't promise anything. And if you are not honest and only be nice because you want to get 'known' to a master: be sure he will watch behind your storefront. I don't want to say that anybody does something like that, I really don't know (and I really hope nobody does). But I want to prevent it before you even think about it. Being honest and respectful is maybe the most important thing. Than maybe you find the master you are looking for.

Greetings,
daid

i DO think more attention should be given to the part in the holocron where is talks about the master padawan relationshiop. i think too many new people just think they sign up and they're on the list and that means they will get one. like taking a number at the deli. "now serving, padawan #7234!"

edit: ok i went and found it. this part from the holocron should be on the looking for a master thread. imho :)

the looking for a master thread is getting pretty busy lately. would it be to hard to add the above Holocron link to DJ's original post?

When I was a Jedi Knight I never really posted to be honest. I would find the right padawans I was looking for ussually by spending time with the students in the servers. :)

I posted, and bubu took me on as a padawan :)

also I posted when I was looking for padawans and found people.

but in fact the response is kinda overwhelming. I got flooded with requests, was kinda lot of work to actually "find" any. but those fellas I chose have proven worthy ;)

well, when I arrived I think Aphex (yeah, I think it was Aphex) just got his promotion to JAK, and i asked him if I could be his padawan... but our time-zones were too differnet for this.

The next Knight, shortly thereafter was Fizz, and I asked him aswell.
I don't know why he choose me in the end, but I'm happy he did:D

What happened with me is that I was on the servers alot, I was on IRC almost constantly. I had fun and people noticed. I asked a JAK if I could attend his class one time, and the rest is history.

didnt thought about that they help to prevent all these posts. youre right with that. But maybe you should write in the description that there is no guarantee to find a master if you post there.
@cmad, sorry i dont remember :/ if there were a thread-search funktion i would have used it first.... (*porkes the JAC's*, sorry, dont want to be disrespectful, just want to say that it would be usefull).

I had a similar thread Daid, and it resulted in no-good. Actually, those 2 threads (master/paddy) ARE helpful; they prevent spam master/paddy threads by every newbie

Sometimes the threads work and other times it doesnt. The threads were created because there were too many new students posting "Need A Master" threads.

It's true that most of the post go on deaf ears and the place can become a void of lost souls searching for masters but it still can work.

If the thread just upped and dissapeared you would all of a sudden have a handful of "I Need A Master!!!11one" threads pop up. So even if it doesnt work that well its still usefull. Sorta like a thread pop up blocker.
