Academy Improvement ideas | |

I just thought that since I have to state my points of view in so many places where I've gotten involved in forum discussions, I'd take them all up here, so I don't have to fling around and say the same things a million times over. Ok. Here it goes, and I'm sorry if you've read this many times before, but remember, it's just a collection of the various ideas and thoughts I've spread out on 10-15 different topics. And remember. This is what I would like to see, and what I want the council to ponder. Also keep in mind that I don't have all the answers on how to realize the ideas or have any details hammered out. That's why I want lots of ppl giving me their 2 cents here (i'm gonna be rich if that money is ever turned to real dough).
Also, I will not bring up why I feel this to be so urgent, since I can't seem to do that without stepping on anyones toes, so please just bare with me on this one. 1. JAT's and JAK's that want to teach guns should take a trial that clearly qualifies them as knowledgeable on the subject. This could, for instance be in a guns ffa game against decidedly good players that volunteer, or on a pub or whatever where they have to score so many points or someting. Remember, I don't have details. 2. I would like to see polls on the website where students get to vote on what gametypes they want to learn more about, or what type of classes they like best. This would make it easier for JAT's to plan their classes so that ppl are happy with them and get to learn what they are interested in. 3. I would like for the servers to be scheduled for outright FFA (possibly with guns in all rooms, except spawnroom or something) an hour or so every day, and another hour where ppl can go play ctf with other students of the academy. This way, we can get the good side of the pubs without having to play with some of the dickheads that frequent those servers. 4. I can bring in guest 'lecturers' to give classes on certain topics (full force guns ctf). DJ Sith liked this idea, but I'm not so sure. 5. I would like to see academy specific rules for gametypes other than duelling in the academy. JAT's and JAK's should be heard on how those rules should be written, and the first 'sketches' of them should be posted on the forums, so all can have a say if they like. 6. I would like to see a 'classmates' system, where ppl who want to are assigned to (or if they agree with someone) a 'classmate' from roughly the same timezone. This way, the ones that are new to the academy and (unlike me) a bit shy will have someone just as new as them to ask the 'stupid' (in their minds) questions, without having to be afraid of embarrassing themselves in public. They can also support each other and help each other out a good bit on learning. Don't get me wrong on this one. No one should be forced to have a classmate, but for those who like it, I think it would be great. It would also be good for newcomers to have some support if you want to post something on the forums, or at least someone you can discuss what you intend to post to the forums before you post it. This way a lot of foolishness can probably be quenched before it arises (I would have needed on, eh? ![]() 7. I would like JK2 videos to be posted on the academy files section. I know that most of them aren't about duelling, but it is still cool stuff and might be able to open some ppls eyes to a world yet unknown. I know where to find most of them, and I would be happy to supply the academy with as much material as they like. 8. I would like to see a place where you can upload demos to the files section, without having to mail them to a JAC first. I know this turns it sort of into an FTP, but it's really simple to apply rules to incoming files. Nothing larger than 5mb for instance (20 mins of demo usually ends up at just above 4mb). This is a great way to improve ones skills, and can also be used by trainers to explain certain things more vividly and let students 'take home' their lessons and study them over and over, for instance if they're having trouble with timing on some special attack or anything. I'm sure I've forgotten something here. If I remember it, I'll edit it in later. Now, before I leave the pen and paper I would like to point out that this in no way or form is meant as criticism towards the academy or anyone within it, but instead suggestions of how we can make the academy a better place for ALL of us to learn ALL skills we want. For those of you who would just like to point out that you like it the way it is I can only say "So do I, but I think we can make it even better". Cheers /Pepsi PS. If anyone feels offended by the post above I apologize and ask you to explain why you feel that way so I can correct it or explain myself. |

Take classes you like. This is important, since you're motivation comes from the interest to learn. If something LOOKS interesting, it probably is. If it isn't, you've at least figured that much out. Knowledge is never wrong, you know. Speaking of which; Yes, sweden has a military defense. Now it seems I'm part of it. Aye.... Gun on, but keep the guns IN the videogames. /Pepsi |

I recommend starting with Bootcamp 1.0 or another "for beginners" class. Arcuss recommended I take Huxley's beginner's movement class. You might want to consider that one too. I wouldn't worry about classes if things change. Even if the class(es) you take b4 (or if) things change, you'll still have learned something. I wouldn't worry about the changes so much as the knowledge. _______________ Midbie Council Member #2 - Profile ID 2073 | Member of B@rtM@ulS@ar | Owner of Monty's 2000th comment & D@RtHM@UL's 8100th comment | Former Padawan of SilkMonkey & Arcuss JA Goaltender & NHL Fan | Fellow Rush fan to Axion|Plo Koon is my oldest JA friend Post your RL pics HERE! | Post you JK2/JK3 screenies HERE! Um...I didn't know Sweden had a military... ![]() Hey, while I'm here and we're discussing academy improvement, let me ask some people a question. We've been going over class schedule modification, points systems, etc... at this point in time, I'm a little hesitant to start taking classes if things are going to be in transition. Could anybody provide some information on what would be the most basic classes I should start with that would pretty clearly carry over to whatever is going to happen in the future? Any ideas at all would be appreciated. Thanx. -rh _______________ Back from the dead... This comment was edited by Ruuk Haviser on Feb 21 2003 06:21am. |

Ok. I'm scrapping the classmates idea, since it seems to go unsupported. It was also the one where I had absolutely no idea on how it was going to be implemented, and as you say bubu; Benefits are hardly worth the effort it would take to arrange.
As for guest lecturers, I've arranged for SkyGod (a clanmate of mine. I know Jake Kainite and him sort of know each other) to do this. The only requirement is that he wants to know a bit in advance what ppl want to learn from him. I checked with our sponsors, and we can use our clans server if we like. This way admins of the jedi academy don't have to pass out rcon to somebody unknown, and it'll be easier for him to demonstrate things on a low ping server. This will have to be after the weekend though, since him and me are gonna go berserk with a C130 and a couple of tons of machine gun ammunition (don't worry. It's part of a coop thing between the swedish skydivers association and the swedish military). On a side note I'd like to say that it's nice to see ideas catching on, and that I'm maybe not such a freak for thinking the way I do. I guess I owe some ppl apologies for calling them stupid when all I really had to do was present it properly, clearly and without risk of misinterpretation (this is as close you'll ever get to hear me say 'I'm sorry', so suck it up while you can ![]() Cheers Ioshee on (wouldn't wanna miss being Uber Cool Like Arcuss) ![]() Pepsi |

Well I really can't comment as a current JAC, but as a former JAC most of these ideas are pretty good. The last 3 seem a bit extreme at the moment and resource consuming. this attitude i like! ![]() so what do i think? hmm.. well, about guns: i like sared's weapon system. i think it should be implemented somehow. and we definitely need a JAT guns specialist. i also like the guest lecturers idea. try to get some to come. and i also agree that we need more variety in terms of game types and maps on our servers. the ideal would be more servers, with each server dedicated to a different game type. i don't think the servers would be empty. i know A LOT of people who would be on each server 24/7. let's see what the donation system will get us... ![]() polls are also a good idea. that way the JATs can see what the students think without having to read through a trillion comments on the forums. however, a classmate system is not such a good idea, IMO. it would be too much of a hassle without much results. as for a file system, i know DJ is planning to make one of our own, i just don't know when. gun on, pepsi! ![]() _______________ make install -not war |

Well I think that's almost the problem with the courtyard and our current policies on guns... you can't do ANYTHING with guns in the temple... but if you're outside your as good as dead... sometimes people want to do things outside and not die.... if nothing else we need two courtyards ![]() The next version of the academy map should have at least two places to use guns, one of which should be a ffa arena, where as Pepsi said, will be declared as an area of complete anarchy.... well to a point heh. _______________ [Oi Oi Oi!!] |

Didn't know the file section was jk2.nets. But anyways... we might be able to solve this by simply putting up a hosted webpage somewhere and link to the files on it from our site. It shouldn't be too hard, and the scripting is no problem at all.
For now, though, I can recommend www.own-age.com/vids/ for skills (brag) videos. Most of them are excellent, and show what the most elite ppl can do when they try it 50 times or so. ![]() Nice thinking on the guns. I can already see "gunnery sergeant Pepsi" written in neon before my eyes. ![]() Ioshee, what does UCLA mean? Mohawk: The game has very good built in ffa maps, so not playing the JA map won't be a problem at all (quite the opposite, actually). About the standing around (as opposed to 'real' ffa) it can be solved by simply declaring anarchy in the courtyard. No rules outside the doors. What kills counts, and if you're not interested, don't go out there. We had quite a battle out there just today, actually. And yes, I definitely think it's time for a truce. *kisses and hugs mohawk, and gets a pointy piece of hair in the eye* Ruuk: Glad you know I hail from sweden. ![]() I'd be happy to help you (and everybody else who want to improve their ctf skills) "not get your butt kicked on a regular basis". ![]() For starters, I put two posts in 'JK2 discussions', one about strafejumping, and one about CTF vs FFA and dueling. It's fast and easy reading, and you should read that if you wanna get good at it (otherwise I'll explain it to you on the server, but this way we can save time). Ioshee, bring out the guns! ![]() /Pepsi PS. It would be nice to see more of what JAK's, JAT's and JAC's think about these ideas. |

I don't really agree with your topics 6-8. Currently they aren't that feasible. The classmates system I don't think is really required. A lot of players have joined at the same time as one of their gaming friends or joined because one of their friends was already a member. That's how I got involved here. As MindOfSin said we're pretty newb friendly around here. I think most members realize that their are a lot of new players here and aren't going to laugh at questions that a new person to the game or academy would ask. And also going "God you suck" is definitely not something many people would accept you saying to a new player.
The thing about uploading files and demos would work currently because the files section isn't the academy's. its jkii.net's. And well I don't think that its been updated in over a month. The rest of your points are valid and its just a matter of if they can be done or how to do them. I think Sared gave a possible answer for testing gunners in his weapon system thread. However for you to be a trainer with guns you would not be able to have the rank of Jedi Knight, Jedi Instructor, Jedi Mentor, or Jedi Master. Because simply a Jedi wouldn't use guns. New ranks would have to be created as probably the best possible solution. _______________ When you are going through Hell, keep going. -Sir Winston Churchill. Great points, Pepsi. And no offending statements found, so don't worry. I can now see where you're really coming from, and well, can agree with many of them. And I wouldn't be opposed to playing ctf/guns... I'd just have to get some help from you so I don't get my butt kicked on a regular basis.

I like most of the ideas, but yeah I think maybe the CTf should definetly have it's own server, and maybe it will alernate every two hours between CTF and FFA, a REAL FFA that is more liking to the public servers instead of what we have at for instance KS where people are usually standing around waiting to duel amd whatnot. I think if that is done, the map used for FFA should NOT be the current Academy map, whether we make a new one for it or not, I don't think it should be as closed in...
You've got some really good points Pepsi, most of which I have not yet seen in the other posts. Plus you weren't so abrasive, lol. I apologize for any past run-ins and believe a truce is in order... so what do you say? Forgive me? ![]() _______________ [Oi Oi Oi!!] |

Hehe well I don't know any details Pepsi. I just said "more time on ctf." And right now a few hours a day would be MORE than no time.

MoS, Ioshee (I have to bunch you up, so I can answer two things at once here):
If the academy decides to make one server ctf only, that is all good and well, but it will most likely be empty most of the time, so organizing may still be needed. Lots of servers are a good thing, but too many is not, since it thins out population quite a bit. If, instead, the academy decides that one server should be guns ctf during 2 hours or so every day, then all the ctf maniacs would go there just then, and be able to play against all the other ctf maniacs, thus making it a good game, instead of an empty server. This is just a danger of having too many servers. If we're gonna get one more, I think the best way to go would be to try both things out (a week or two should be enough) and see what works best. /Pepsi |

Awesome attitude, dude (hehe that rhymes)
I like your ideas too. If some of your ideas came to fruition I could get one of my best friend in RL to come here more often (he is a HUGE cft fan.) The council is seriously considering having one of the servers spend more time on the cft game type if I’m not mistaken. I like the poll idea.
The times set aside for certain gametypes...eh...I'm not too keen on that idea. I would rather see some JATs getting involved and reserving servers for certain game types. Lecturers would be great. Modifying certain rules for certain situations would be good. I hate running by a guy who is typing in CTF and getting shot in the back. The classmates system is definately not needed. When I first joined, I was a bit nervous, but was immediately given a tour of the map and shown some of the basics of dueling.
