Who has one set up by their ISP? (Internet Service Provider)

I was just wondering, since I never have heard about one outside of the European Union.
Anyone got one?

And if so, how big?

(the download limit usually is an amout of MB you can download maximum per week/month/year)

3 mbit down, 768 kbit up. It's that upload bandwidth that costs the bucks.

No limits for me, but they make sense. I pay over $100 a month for way fast internet. Why? Because bandwidth and big pipes are expensive. ISP's need to have limits if they want to charge $20 a month for broadband. Your average DSL line should cost at least $50 a month so your ISP can stay in business w/o traffic limits. ..

how fast? I pay appr. $40 (or less) for 2048/256 with no limit :P. I know, my isp is crazy :D..

I don't know. It could be in the fine print, but the big header did say 'no traffic limit'. Of course, I also pay quite some cash (70 of your US Dollars) to keep my connection. :)

So if we want to find out if British ISPs have limits, we'll just ask Monthy? :P

Those of you who think you have no limit, you are almost certainly mistaken. Okay, DJ pays megabucks for a big pipe, so he doesn't have a limit. But almost all ISPs have a bandwidth limit. Most customers are unaware of this because it is buried deep in the fine print and also because it takes a total porn freak to come anywhere near exceeding the limit. Seriously, these limits are huge.

Rather than impose limits ISP's should raise their rates. People just don't know how expensive connectivity is.

I know of a variety of places that do this. Most of them are Wireless services, though, the type that you connect to through an antenna on the roof. They'll cut you back if you pass the limit.

I think...it's a way to curb illegal downloads. I mean, who breaks 2 or 3GB a month unless you are downloading movies/mp3/pr0n?

The sneaky beggars are just introducing these caps in the UK now. Luckily there's still several ISPs that don't have them.

its not a rip-off Gradius.
ISPs are charged for traffic they produce, not for bandwith. and if u are on kazaa, overnet, donkey and bittorrent and uploading and downloading like a mofo, you create extra costs for the ISP, and those are passed on to you.

if you cross the limit, u gotta pay more. usually a LOT more.

A download limit from your ISP? That sounds like a HUGE rip-off to me.

Pretty much all ISPs have bandwidth limits, but it's usually in the very, very, very fine print in the contract. And it is usually asymetrical--the amount of data you are allowed to receive is typically many times greater than the amount of data you're allowed to send.

there is a implied one in most USA ISPs, if u read there TOSA they usually have some number. but for the most part no restrictios in the US. But ur isp will call you if u download a lot, ie comcast :P

It's amazing how easy you cross those
