Okay it has come to my attention that we have some servers that are rarely used. So I came up with this idea. What if we converted one of them into a JA public server representing the academy. It could be a place to mingle and for people to learn of us and see what we have to offer. Of course just cuz its public doesnt mean the rules wont apply. It could be a place for wannabe members to get used to the atmosphere we try to uphold here at the academy. Of course if its public chances are we will get a lammer here and there but it will also help us get accostummed to dealing with lammers so when u get that one stray member gone bad lamming on the PW-Protected servers we have, productive reactions will occur instead of hostile, chaotic situations forming. It can be a place To test what we have learned against the masses of the JK gamming community. It can help us introduce people who are awaiting approval of their application with a tour of the map and a crash course in the rules and etiquette of the academy so when they get approved they have less of a chance of having an "I didnt know" incident. Perhaps once in a while a JAK+ would even hold a class on the server to show people what we offer in a class.
It would be our way of extending a hand of friendship to the entire JK community. It can be a place for them to ask questions of clarification before they join suchh as "Isn't the JA a clan?", Many questions and misconceptions about the academy exist and this would be a great way to answer/clarify them. :) Well That is my idea please leave feedback :D

EDIT:
I will add quotes of comments that make points i didnt think of that support this idea.

This would be an exaple of the academy showing social responsibility and that i believe would be a great gesture :) This server could also be used by such teams as the Aurochs CTF and TFFA team to have home matches. And we could organise tournements that extend beyond the JA, giving the JA a presence within the greater JA community. -Jaiko D'Kana-

I say like this, I wouldnt have found the jedi-academy if it wasn't for my brother.
If I hadn't gotten it from there I would probably get her but finding the JA's public server (if we had one).
I'm not a person that surfs around a lot on the web looking for stuff, I just take what I need....going to a public JA server would be like

- Woah is there a place like this where ppl don't lame u all the time!! woah, I want to join:P
frankly....it's just P.R:D

I don't think it would be hard to "admin" a server like this. There is no real need for a JAK+ to be on the server 24/7. Sure, Knights are peacekeepers and diplomats, but not donut-eating security offers, gazing at a monitor. If something bad happens, there is almost always a person to disagree with what is happening; if that person gets on IRC, there is pretty much always a ranked member around who could hop on the server.

field trips were great, but difficult to organize. they're like the most difficult classes to hold. people run late and lose track of you, u get on a weird server thats too full to handle all of the students bla bla....
yet they were great :D

I remember that SO CTF raid we did with Shannon, Aeth, Magra and a lot of other grea players... :)

anyway, I think the community is big enough, and we dont really need extra, special advertising.

well, since I think the #1 goal of a public server would be to promote the Academy, but a public server isn't practical...then what about bringing back field trips? :P.

To summerise what students should do if there is a heavy lamer into 3 words it would be:

Get an admin.

As there would be lamers on the server most of the time this would become a need to always have an admin, especialy as calling in an admin to ban the lamer who has a dynamic ip would mean them continualy kicking them if they rejoin.

However, it could be worth a try right?
If it was run for a week or even a few days everyone will be able to experiance the lag themselves and the seriousness (is that a word? :P) of the lamer problem can be assessed.

Personaly I think if the knights+ are able to keep ontop of the lamer situation it would be a good idea.

EDIT: What about the jk2 classes server. Are there any jk2 classes left?

Hardwired feels so strongly about his views, he put his name at the bottom TWICE! :D

I like the idea, the only thing i'm iffy about, is the lag it would create for the other servers. Although, if this were to happen, I would like to see one of the default maps on it. Y'know, people will think "Woah, the JA has it's own map? Guess I better go sign up!". Y'know? Stuff like that... a public server could be a sort of "teaser". But yeah, I doubt it'll happen unless someone gives us an extra server. However, I think our next server should be a European classes server. :D

A nice idea, but there would be tremedous security issues.

And If you look at it. There isn't really any server that we can take public. JK3home and JK3classes both have to be restricted. Wireplay servers as both a gaming server and a classes server for some.

The only server left is the ctf server. And I quite like to have a game of ctf every once in a while.

And is it really that bothersome to register? The only people that would fail to get an account would be banned members and such. I and see little reasin to let them back on our grounds.

And frankly...If I wanna play public i'll go to public server. I come to the JA servers to chill with people I know are stand up guys and gals. And I know i won't have to wear out my kick button.

In short...If some or all are made public...Don't expect seeing me there anytime soon..

students only have limited ways of handling lamers, due to the lack of admin powers.

Well, if one of the JAK+ starts a "How to handle lamers" class, or if most of the student's read Tido's How to Handle Lamers and Such post, perhaps laming wouldn't be such a big problem.

BTW: I love this idea, Angel! :)

Well, about this (good idea Angel :)) I think that the lamer charts would skyrocket up. People who want to duel and have fun won't be able to if there is a public server, because there'll be tons of lamers/cussers. And the rules will be probably unknown to them, so they'll just start doing wild things :P The admins will need to spend lots of time enforcing the server.

Otherwise, I think it's an awesome idea :D

EDIT: Also, if there's lamers that like to lame occasionally on the server and have a dial up connection, if you ban them, they'll still be able to come back on afterwards. The only way to stop these dial-up guys with dynamic ip's is to ban they're ip location thing (like a whole city i think :P).

EDIT #2- I think the only way to keep the servers from lagging a whole bunch, is to use a completely different server from someone else :(

Whats the point in joining the JA, when you can play on their public server? It might cause the opposite of what you actually wanted (Keep members away instead of getting them).

Well Wolfwood You got me thinking with this comment but i found the answer :D. Just because they have access to the public server wont make them not want to join because they dont have full access to what we offer. They cant go to classes, they cant post on the forums really the public server is like a teaser of what we have to offer, no where near the true depths of it and by shoing this "teaser" hopefully people will want to join to get the full benefits

Quote:
the high number of lamers out there in jk3 land. Take me for instance, when I get bored on the jk3 servers, sometimes I'll go on pubs and just start laming the crap out of people. Sometimes people (outside of the JA) join me as well. I predict the exact same thing happening if we had a pub. And we'd basically be welcoming people back who have been banned due to their ignorance.
Silly gradius :D The public server would still have the rules applyed to it, anyone who has been banned has shown they can't follow the rules and would be banned on the public server as well :P just cuz theres no password doesnt mean there is no way to stop lammers. Also if anything it would help the application process a great deal if someone who has applied/intends to apply joins the public server and lames, because obviously we will know they can't follow the rules set here. :D i hope this clarified thoes issues, i guess there still is the lag issue though, anyone got ideas concerning that?

I love the idea :) If we can find a way to reduce the lag issue lol.

My major concern, however, lies with Lake Vladarion. Public ppl aren't going to respect who he was and what he stood for. We could however just lock it :)

Well, one could always donate a server, using a different network (if at all possible), but still, I'd have to disagree. Mainly due to the high number of lamers out there in jk3 land. It is a good thought Angel, but I just don't see it doing any good. Also, people waiting for their applications to be accepted usually only wait about a day, sometimes less. I think they'd be able to live that long without our servers :)

I know DJ was flirting with the idea of having a new server box and a public server would be one of the things on it...but it was just brainstorming - I don't think he ment he was going to move forward with it.

I like the idea but yeah, at the moment we just don't have the resources.

While its a good idea, its not fesable with our current resources, as WW and aratan said, more lag. Thats true. the Sever it self can handle it, but the network the server is on cannot handle it.

Well... to be honest, I would have to say that I disagree with this being a good idea. Let me explain why:

First of all, converting a server to be public, Will make all our servers lag really bad. A public server will be crowded, However, the home server and the classes server are usually crowded as well. Now, because they are all on the same box, you would probably get ping 600 (if not 999) and up on all servers.

Then 2nd, Whats the point in joining the JA, when you can play on their public server? It might cause the opposite of what you actually wanted (Keep members away instead of getting them). I am not saying that this will happen, im just saying it could.

So, In my opinion, We are fine as we are right now :)
