It's just that Windows doesn't use the AMDs with their full capabilities... Or so I've heard, at least :)

It's the old Wintel thing. Windows is compiled with full Intel optimizations turned on, special undocumented opcodes, blah blah blah, but they don't use any of the cool stuff AMD supports (and Intel doesn't).

Someone had told me that AMD processors don't work as well with Windows... But that might have been for the old ones; never tried an AMD myself.

Erm I think I was misunderstood :P

AMD processors in Windows don't run as well as they will in other OSes

I think that would be older ones, since I've never had a problem with the two latest CPU and Motherboards...

I personally prefer AMD. It's cheaper and runs just as well. And they also have a 64-bit line. I personally have one myself and it rocks my socks.

A Radeon 9600PRO should work for you. It is an affordable and solid card and I think it runs for about $120. You're definitely going to want something DirectX 9.0 compatible.

512MB of RAM is pretty much standard now. Even though JA requires way less than that.

If you are buying a factory-built PC, pretty much any one you get that is $700 or more will run JA smoothly and with high FPS. I can't say anything about other high-end games like Doom 3 or Far Cry.

this older thread should be useful, it's chocked full of goodies. it's about getting an affordable pc that runs JA very well but, can still run the newer games (doom3, hl2) on the lower settings, have fun reading! :D

You want advices for a computer that runs Jedi Academy smoothly?

Wow ^^

Ok well...this doesnt require the very latest GFX cards heh

You take a CPU with like uhm...1.5ghz+ (its cheap and definately enough)
You take 256MB RAM (definately enough ^^)
...and you take a 64MB GFX card like GeForce3 TI 400 (it should be pretty cheap by now...a very cheap GeForce2 mx 400 could even let you run JK3 smoothly...but i wouldnt rely on that one)

Well...thats it =)

a few tips & tricks from Bail's manual

1) You can never have enough RAM
128 MB will not do it. Let's say 1 Gigabyte?:P

2) Don't drink beer while assembling computer. Or you'll get a windows computer!

3) Geforces work like a charm, but don't buy the MX releases. They suck

4) AMD processors = the shiznit. Make sure you get an AMD and an AMD Motherboard:D
