That's right - I'm getting ready to eschew my family's traditions and leave M$ behind somewhat. However, I would like to bring JKA with me. Has anyone seen a client for Linux? ... didn't think so.

Maybe someone who has baseq3 (Linux or Win) could help me out here: will it work to assemble JKA's assets and dll's (or .so's, w/e) into a mod for Q3? Because I'm fairly sure there are Q3 clients for Linux. right? :P

Back in my Gentoo days I ran JKII just fine w/ WineX. Transgaming deserves your support. $5 a month ain't so bad. :)

It's not fifteen dollars a month! It's five dollars a month. Is that so much to pay? :D

But there's a three-month minimum when you first sign up. After the first three months you can renew for one month at a time at five bucks a month. While you're subscribed, you can download to your heart's content.

The CVS version blows! It's gimpware. :(

Cedega comes in two varieties, supported and unsupported. If you can find the CVS version of Cedega, you can avoid the 15 dollars a month JavaGuy is talking about, but its unsupported. The whole idea behind the GPL is that if you make software for a GPL OS, you have to make the source code open to the public. TransGaming follows this, but they don't advertise it.

Call Microsoft tech support, tell them how badly it screwed up your system, and ask them to help you migrate to Linux. Tell them that since they screwed it up, they should help fix it. :D

Thanks everyone. My plans might be postponed for a few days though, because XP SP2 just screwed my computer over REAL bad. If only I'd migrated a few days earlier. ;)

What the others said :D You can run JKA (and JK2) perfectly in Linux; with Cedega (previously known as WineX)...

BTW: Whoa Javaguy, nice script!

BTW2: I was thinking of fully migrating to FreeBSD :) That is, if it has decent greek support :D

ID made a q3 port to linux, if raven wanted to they would have to do it their selves, from how the previous quake games were layed out its fairly easy to port the game. If you had the code to the exe :)

I use it with Cedega. Go to transgaming.com. Buy the damn subscription--it's only fifteen bucks for three months, and thereafter you can renew for five bucks a month.

I have no Windows boxes in my house, play JKA on Linux all the time, and no, I didn't have to tweak the CD protection.

I do not recommend Point-2-Play. Just use plain-vanilla Cedega. I recommend writing a little shell script to launch it. The script should shut down any instances of artsd, change directory into your GameData directory, mount your CD, run the app, then unmount the CD for you. Mine even shuts down my mail server (it bounces to a backup) and restarts it when I'm done playing.

E-mail me if you need any help.

it works with wine, or winex (aka cadega), just needs some tweaking with the Cd-check.
