Hi there,

Please join me in speaking out against the Beijing 2008
Olympics. As long as the Chinese government occupies Tibet and
oppresses its own people, it does not deserve the honor of
hosting such a prestigious international event.

I consider those two ('specially the last one, as it was posted right after my comment) directed at me, and my comments about politics in sports, not the war stuff.

Your "reluctance" to participate in Plo's suggested action has nothing to do with what I'm saying, at least.

My sentiments, which as Plo said himself were a mirror image of his own, were with regards to the automatic belief that war is the answer. I had thought it was perfectly clear in the post I made earlier that whatever action you decided to take was obviously yours to take, but what was really upsetting was the reliance upon violence to "right" things.

Now, if I remember correctly, you didn't actually say anything to that regard, so if you didn't, you're really getting offended for no reason.

When was it ever questioned whether or not the Tibet affair was bad?

I'm not on China's side here. I'm on the sport's side. Sorry if it makes me Gollum to care about the integrity and innocence of sport, I'll just go "eat raw fish", then.

Don't get me wrong; I'm neither encouraging nor discouraging the actions suggested by Plo Koon.

Mainly I was disappointed with peoples' overall attitudes to the subject as opposed to the actions they chose to take or not take.

Some people may feel that the Olympics are a perfect opportunity to make this boycott simply because of the mass publicity involved. Personally, though I do believe the human rights violations are unacceptable, I also don't think it's fair to punish everyone.

I myself feel there are better times to make your message known.

On the other hand, I do not oppose the actions of those who believe this is appropriate. A peaceful but vociferous demonstration harms nobody and gets the message across.

Politics are always involved, yes; but imo, using the sport to pressure a country, is just wrong, and pretty much blackmailing - no matter what that country did.

The Olympics are most certainly not all about the money. There are government politics involved in nearly if not all of our day-to-day activities, Olympics included.

That kept in mind, let's not forget that the Olympics are a representation of what is possible for the world. People representing countries from all around, competing, but showing friendship and admiration for their each other.

The Olympics always have been a prestigious event. It blows me away to see that people don't think so.

Why don't you try telling the athletes who competed in those games that it's not prestigious. Tell the people who use their Gold Medals to provide services and community development to their homes and bring publicity to human rights and social issues with the fame they've garnered.

Just because our media doesn't pick it up doesn't mean it doesn't matter.

Also, it's ... sickening, frankly, to see how quickly war comes into this conversation. Believe it or not, conflicts can be resolved without the necessity of mass violence. Attitudes like "such-and-such will not happen without a war" is the reason wars happen in the first place.

Now I'm not a pacifist, but neither am I a war-monger. It's just plain depressing to witness the opinions I've seen displayed here so flippantly talking about war - MASS MURDER, for those of you unfamiliar what a war actually means.

Sorry if that's blunt but that's the truth.

If you think China is so bad, then I'm almost afraid to see what you thought of Iraq...

It's sports. Making it a political tool is just making it even more embarassing to the roots than it already is.

Ofcourse it's true China has commited an horrible
crime in Tibet, but even the Dalai Lama (which is like
the king and pope of Tibet when it was an independant
country) is okay with the Olympic games there.

It's horrible and one day Tibet should be a free
country again but why would you cancel the
Olympic games for it....
