When Roddeberry created Star Trek, I'm sure his vision relied less on realism and more on optimism. Star Trek offers us a view on how things COULD be, and maybe SHOULD be, but not on how things WILL be. I admire Star Wars in how it familiarises the future, and how Lucas' stories weave together archetypes that we consider common knowledge (the dirty future, the stereotypical characters etc.). The main difference, as far as my opinion extends, is how universal both of the shows' ideas are. Star Wars centres around the force, a religious entity. As far as I know it doesn't even try to promote human ideals of universal peace and the search for common ground. I see Star Wars as fantasy, meaning it involves a milieu (the SW universe) full of adventures and saga. Star Trek, on the other hand, is pure science-fiction. I define sci-fi as a possible continuation, and extension, to our world and future. Star Trek is human in nature, not only because it centres around human characters and institutions (and Earth), but also because it promotes ideals that are within OUR, present day people, reach. Star Trek depicts a sterile universe, true, or maybe one should say that Starfleet is the sterile aspect, but the feelings it conveys and analogies it draws are far from sterile in nature. Take the Cardassian - Bajoran struggle in DS9. It's clearly in homage to any forced relocation in history, the struggle between Nazis and Jews first and foremost. Sometimes the analogy is so striking that it's almost painful to watch. Star Trek as a universe is less colourful and less diverse in visual richness as the one in Star Wars, but that's one of the reasons they're so hard to compare. Besides, for all we know, SW isn't the future. It might be the past too. Or maybe neither. I see SW as a different dimension altogether, hence I interpret it as fantasy, not sci-fi. So as a question to people who might be thinking "which is best?" (shame on them), I'd pose the following: 1) Do you want to immerse yourself in an alternate universe, with little to none left to ponder on its implications on the human mind, but filled with beautiful adventures, cool spaceships, monotheistic theology and stereotypical but entertaining facets of good vs. ewil? or 2) Do you want to know what MIGHT happen in the future, and maybe work harder in your own life to pursue it? Do you want to concentrate less on adventure and inter-species conflicts and more on an idealistic view of humanity in the future? If you answer YES to (1), I'd offer you Star Wars, if you answer YES to (2), I'd offer you Star Trek. If you answer YES to both, I'd say GOOD FOR YOU! If you answer NO to both, I'd whip you. And I hate jello, it's the worst culinary invention since marmite. GO TO SLEEP!
