I'm sorry for my ignorance, but is the Pentuach the Torah? Maybe it's the name for the translated text? I'm a little confused. :)

Yes it is. I believe the book we use during services is called a Chumash (pronounced Khu-mash).

Quote:
I'm thinking that the 5 books of modes are what we have in our Bible as the first five books of Moses being Genesis, Exodus, Levidicus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Is this correct? Also, is the haftorah the remaining books of the Bible, (the prophets, psalms, proverbs, and other scriptural books)? Are any missing from what we have tranlated in our english versions? Are there any extra books that we don't have? I'm sorry for all the questions DJ. :) It's just asking around in religious (christian based) stores and book stores alike people were looking at me like I had two heads and I would really like to know as much as I can about what I'm looking for to limit confusion. :D

Modes is a typo. I was referring to the 5 books of Moses. :) The haftorah contains all those extra scriptual books. Typically the weekly parshah will have a corresponding Haftorah reading which will exemplify or clarify the parshah.

Quote:
While I was looking around in those stores, I did however go them to pull up on there computers a Interliniar Bible containing Greek, Hebrew, and English. This looks to be like the most amazing Bible ever to me. :D I was just wondering if you heard anything about it or know if the Interliniar texts are actually translated word for word instead of trying to make it easy for us to read. It's priced at $160 which isn't a small purchase for me in the least so I wanna make sure I'm getting what I'm paying for. I don't want english which I already posses but a very careful word for word translation even if something looks like, "And with a male you shall not lay lyings of a woman". If this is what I'm up against in that Biblical Hebrew, thank you for the warning. :D

The Chumashot I'm used to reading appear to have a quasi-literal translation. The "what it really means" enhancements are probably affected by the various Rabbininc interpretaion texts. If you feel like reading a bunch you can pick up a copy of the Talmud to see what the ancient Rabbis thought about torah verses. I've never tried an interlinear text. Not knowing Greek hinders me a little there. :)

Quote:
Thank you very much again for this information. I'm not aware of any in my area, but I'm sure they exist. I'll be sure to look around for one and perhaps I should visit a local place of worship to gain this knowledge. Do you think they would get offended by me asking this?

Your neighbourhood may also have a Jewish Community Center. Most of those will have a store with this stuff there or at least a map to a good Jewish store. I know at least at my synogauge thy won't mind you asking questions. Everyone's got to spread their version of the word, right? :)

Hey Jeff,

This is kind of related to the discussion we had on IRC yesterday, about the Military and whatnot. Anyway, it's a pretty inspiring story about a Corporal Desmond T. Doss, who served in the Pacific theater in World War II. If you get the chance, check it out. :)

Take care, see ya around!

You should have a Jewish store or 2 in town. Many of these will sell a copy of the Pentuach that's used during Shabbat services. This book contains the 5 books of modes and all their corresponding haftorah portions. It lists all verses in Hebrew, an english translation, and a small intrepretation of what the english text is supposed to be conveying. Ignore all that english stuff and stick to the Hebrew. :) The Jew stores may also sell copies of the Torah that are Hebrew only. But really. Biblical hebrew is VERY different than modern hebrew. You've been warned. :D

Hey Koyi,

I saw your reaction to the new "Satanism" thread, and also your post on DJs profile. It's a shame that religions or matters of faith can't obviously be discussed in neutral terms in this Academy. It would be a whole lot easier if those with nothing to say except degrading comments would ignore the threads and let those who are genuinely interested continue with their discussion. I admire your faith, since it stands on a ground far more solid than mine.

I don't know what the purpose of this post was, except maybe to grieve for both of us (and many others) that matters of faith still seem like a taboo in this community as wide and diverse as it is.

Have a great weekend :)

Hi Koyi,

I havent posted for a long time, but have always read your Bible study thread. I have learned a lot from it and it continues to bring me hope and knowledge. For this I want to THANK YOU.

As everyone does, I have been through a few bad patches in the last year and it has been the thread that has brought me most comfort. Both you and DM are truly knowlegeable, I am humbled.

Keep up the good work. I wish it were possible for you to understand fully my meaning, but my life, heart and spirit are indebted to you and DM for showing me the way in my hours of darkness.

Whatever your situation, happy or sad, I pray that the Lord blesses you with hope, dignity, respect and love!

Thank you again for your inspiration!

Love and Regards

Jade

Koyi, i sent you the lyrics :)

City of blinding lights at first I thought was about Heaven but I realised "purple irisses the camera cant see, ive seen you walk unafraid in the clothes you made" he was singing about now, on earth, and about his wife. Meaning you could have heaven on earth if we all just loved :)

Yahweh is about well...read for yourself.

"yahweh, yahweh, always pain before the child is born, why the dark before the dawn?"

what I believe is what he means when singing is what everyone wants to know. Why? and not just about those two things, everything. Why?
