when you start off playing ffxi you dont really need the expansions. Chains of Promathia you dont start until you are lvl 30, and Treasure of Aht Urghan you dont need until higher lvls. Zilart you dont start until you are rank 6 and at least lvl 50s as well. So just the basic game is fine to start off I would think.
