1. The Undying Lands is home to the Valar and the Maiar, the Valar are like angels that descended to live in the world, the Maiar are like lesser Angels who also came. It also serves as heaven on earth for the elves. God gave to the first born (elves) and the second born (man) gifts to the elves he gave immortally and to man he gave death (not as bad as it sounds) Fast forward to the second age and Numenor and is downfall, Sauron has convinced all but the loyal Numenorans that a campaign against the Undying Lands will let them take immortally from the Valar. The Valar called to Eru (god) for help and he answered. The Numenoran fleet was sunk followed by the island of Numemor also being sunk and the world made round with undying lands removed but still connected to those that know the way(elves) Is it far? erm. yes, its not really part of part of the world but can still be travel to if you know the way, and only the only the elves know the way and can get there and a few choice others if you are permitted (Bilbo, Frodo and much later Sam. Gimli also travelled there when Legolas went in the books). 2. Really hard one that always leads onto what is Gandalf? So I'll jump to there and hope I can a least point at age a little. He arrived at the Grey Havens from Valinor at around 1000 the third age, where he was given one (Narya) of the three evlen rings of power. He is one of the five Istari or wizards if you prefer but this is no D&D rulebook wizard, since all of his powers come from within and are not learnt. The Valar appointed 5 of the Maiar to be Istari and to travel to middle-earth and rally its people against Sauron, they were not permitted to challenge him directly with pure might and had to take the forms of old men. Galdalf's name as a Maiar was Olorin. Other examples of Maiar in middle-earth. 1. Sauron the 2nd Dark Lord 2. the Balrog in Moria Gandalf came to middle-Earth about a 1000 years into the third age, so at the time of the LotR he would have been in the form of Gandalf for about 2000 years but being a Maiar he would be as old as Arda and perhaps even time its self. 3. Yep she gave it up being half elve and it was within her right to accept the gift(death) of man from Eru (god).
