Yeah, i used a couple of them to try to increase performance. It actually worked quite well, but i unfortunately don't remember what values i changed/added. Check out some of the tweakguides etc.

I always used to focus on melee, so i haven't really looked into improved spells etc. Might check it out someday though.

You remember well! Coincidentally, i do have a small list of mods that i compiled back 2 years ago when i last played the game. I remember spending a lot of time going through the various trash on TESSource (TESnexus now, or something), and never wanting to do it again, so i kept all the useful mods on my HDD for my next playthrough. I'm actually quite a big fan of the vanilla game, so the mods mostly inact minor and visual changes - you won't get to see no complete conversions that turn the game into a sci-fi apocalyptic shooter or anything.
Some of the mods may be somewhat outdated, so there may be better, newer and improved versions of some of them out there - i haven't updated the list in 7-8 months or so.
